A rat spirit not much bigger than an ordinary brown rat took the empty seat in a flash. He tidied his tiny yukata as his whiskers flicked at the air.
Rat (spirit voice) - ("If anyone does something suspicious outside of our game I will retreat. Thank you for inviting me to play, Trevor.") Rat's speech would be too high frequency for human comprehension, but anybody tuned into rodent frequency would hear a charming sequence of chirps.
Miss Bunny - "Don't forget me!" The spirit plush bounced onto the table, sending the discard pile fluttering across the room. Trevor quickly gathered the cards from the floor.
Trevor - "Sorry."
Should have seen that one coming...

Clyde- "Last time I had a conversation with a rat, it gave me a hit list. This one doesn't speak Glennish though, does it? Kohonesey?"
Theodore- "All squeaks, I'm afraid. Nonetheless, Consuela plays as well as any without saying much, right?" Consuela- "..." Olga- "Lawdaloo, Miss Bunny! Say, should we re-split the pot for everybody?"

Miss Bunny - "Can Trevor and I play as a team?" She bounced onto Trevor's knee and sat down, kicking her feet.
Trevor - "I thought this would be a good time to introduce Rat, and Miss Bunny being drawn to games is inevitable."
Rat (spirit speak) - ("One can't expect she'd observe quietly, either.")
Miss Bunny hummed innocently.

Trevor - "Out of curiosity, where is everyone here from?" Trevor asked while helping to reset the cards. "I'm not very good with recognizing accents."

Clyde- "Harlan proper. Can't imagine anyplace else."
Theodore- "As am I! Glenland is tremendous. I know Consuela and the Monzanos are from Kastan."
Consuela- "..." Henrietta- "Hih. Ind people always mick fun of our accints. Sealindia, iv course."
Shale- "Aritea, though we are spent long time in other Aegenia lands."
Olga- "Aw, Sholly, you're cute as a button! Reckon I'm the only Anty in this crowd. Miss Bunny sounds Glennish, right?"

Miss Bunny - "Washy Wendy and I were born on the isles of the Black Tea Sea."
Trevor - "My accent has softened since my Glennish improved due to Dragomir influence. Before that I don't remember anyone mocking it to my face, but I might have never picked up on the subtleties. Glennish sarcasm is very dry."

Shale- "Do not call me cute, madame."
Olga- "Sawrry, mister." Henrietta- "Glinnish humor is the bist. We all watch Merry Making ind Flipping Mickerels bick home."
Clyde- "How about the funny papers? I love a good comic."

Trevor - "I read a vintage collection of Surly Shirley when I was studying Glen comedies. I didn't understand much, but I still liked them. They'd probably make more sense now with context."

Clyde- "Shirl is my girl! Ya know the Heart-town Coasters did a song about her. Almost the same tune as Sally on my Mind, but music ain't easy."
Theodore- "Hm, afraid I haven't been in Harlan enough within the last century."
Henrietta- "Ginna fix thet in a big way, hih hih."

And thus the game continued. Rat did well enough despite the language barrier, Miss Bunny crashed out Trevor's chips which didn't confront him much, and so on...
Trevor finally got up, stretched a bit, and strolled to the nearest window. He didn't need to breathe any more than he needed to stretch, but it was a thing to do.
Or was it? The world outside was a shifty black murk. With the dull mysterious ambient light in the hospital, it took a moment to notice the window pane was completely knocked out. The building opened into an airless void.

Trevor had early on suspected this hospital fell somewhere between realms. Was calling upon a spirit murk Minchin's power? Did his lineage share traits with his own?"
Trevor - "..."

What secrets could this place hold? Would a Lepponen have unusual powers here? He felt he could intuit things about this reality, whatever it was, through spirit sight. How did he want to proceed? Or would he just have a walkabout?

Trevor decided it would be easier to memorize the layout if at least one foot stayed planted in the physical, and would switch in and out of spirit vision as he traveled. With luck there won't be a bump into somebody in the process. For the now, though, it was time to check the spirit view out this window.
Trevor - "..."

Spirit sight let him see the outlines of buildings and paths, some layered over each other in the typical tangle geography of the impossible realm. Going back to regular sight things remained quite black.

That seemed about right. Trevor turns back around to face the lounge, still using the sight.
