Wraparound- "More fond than you, dead boy. I'll just say it's ta do with the highest form of mortal magic. G'day!" Hm. Might be something to work with in that. He heard the little creature rustling grass again as it returned to the hootenanny.

Trevor turned back and called to the rustling grass.
Trevor - "I do appreciate you meeting me out here. Sorry about my impatience... That was the peculiar beetle speaking."

There was no response. He glimpsed the cobbler emerge from the grass and open the little dollhouse door. Lesser rat poked out of hiding.Lesser Rat- "Sorry about that. A bum lead."

Trevor - "Not necessarily. There was something to the last part, and everyone needs to start somewhere. I'm only sorry that I'm still having difficulty controlling these urges to snark."
The little rat hopped onto Trevor's shoulder again.
Lesser Rat - "Yeah, but you shouldn't waste your politeness on guys like that. C'mon. Let's get us some millet to nibble for our hard work."

At the top of the hill, Trevor looked into the sky. Going back to his body would be the safe thing to do. Maybe then he could call wiser spirits to talk about the new mystery.

Trevor zipped away through the cosmos, ultimately returning to his body with a snap. He had all the ritual elements on hand, but didn't even need them at this point to call on Rat.

Indeed, the colony treated Trevor nearly as one of their own. Without fear, Rat dashed across the floor into view.
Rat - "Hello, Trevor. What are you playing at tonight?"
Trevor - "I have a question about magic hierarchy. It's a vague question, so feel no pressure answering it."
Rat - "Go on, then."
Trevor- "What would you consider the highest form of magic in this mortal world?"

Rat- "The power to control and change spirits is of terrible importance to those of my world. But a mortal may have different ideas... As I recall, they want to be able to change the qualities of mortal things. In the mortal lands I am most familiar with, immortality is the highest goal of mortal alchemy. There are a number of ways to achieve it."

Rat - "Are you researching something in particular?
Trevor - "This unfortunately isn't my usual inquisitiveness. A faerie affiliated with the Circle told me their most powerful magician- she being my progenitor- has some kind of escape plan involving the 'highest form of mortal magic'. That said, I'm not sure Inka Lepponen has any need for immortality, all things considered."

Rat- "Your kind are already immortal in a sense, but being of the mortal world has limitations. Perhaps the type of transmutation in question is transubstantiation."

Trevor - "Sorry, but I'm unfamiliar with this concept. Is that anything like teleportation?"

Rat- "It could appear that way from one world or the other. Transubstantiation changes the substance of a person or object from material to spirit, or from spirit to material. If you were transubstantiated, you could bodily enter the spirit world instead of merely projecting yourself here.

Trevor - "I must admit to how utterly appealing that sounds. Though I wonder if the complications outweigh the benefits... Thank you again for your wisdom, Rat."
Rat - "If you plan on experimenting, do let me know. I enjoy this speculation."
Trevor - "Of course."

Trevor and Rat bid their farewells. This would be a lot to think on.
Trevor remembered Minchin had experience with the spirit world. Maybe he would know some tangential information about this transubstantiation?
