@ Jara - Escapism can be unpleasant, if it interjects your life with much-needed thrill or excitement. But I understand how you wouldn't want to partaketh in that kind of recreational play.

DKender= I think everyone has their own escapism that they prefer. I just don't usually go to apocalyptic or zombie settings first. I think spooky stuff can be fun though, and some of my favorite movies and sort of genres are spooky. I should explain that I think a lot of them have used the excuse of harsh settings = everyone becomes sociopaths, and I disagree-- It brings out the best and the worst in people, but most settings won't explore the better part of it. Also I'm really afraid of actual dead people so I don't really want to fantasize about that.

@ Jara - Aw, I know how you feel. I'm really afraid of dead copepods D8
Strangely, I don't see sociopaths much in zombie literature. However, there are plentiful examples of awful people who behave badly to increase their chance of survival/their group's survival. Some are just plain cruel for the lulz - yet they still care about their chums (usually gangs, in these post-apocalyptic scenarios).
I'm no misanthrope, but I've been the odd one out in mini Lord of the Fly scenarios. Unless you're some Wolverine or survivalist, a crisis is a bad time to be a loner. Even good people prioritize their friends and family.

DKender= It's a legit fantasy but not mine. It's probably because I'm not into zombies or apocalypses as a whole. Also no one likes me so I at least understand where you're coming from .

@all= Oops, I didn't mean to sound dramatic. I just mean in general in RL I seem to turn people off, and I'm ok with that, since I make no special effort to be fakey-friendly. I don't think it's true here or anything.

Maybe it's like that movie identity and we're all just in his head?
EDIT: I get that too Jara, people tend to think I'm weird. It's like this extra sensory thing.

@jara: Wow. You are the exact opposite of me IRL. Making everyone love me is like my mission. That way people don't kill me when I inevitably say something unintentionally insulting. @christopher: All the detail forever. I am a total nerd for that stuff. Usually I'm content with fantasy since it's often just a magical version of reality. ***MAGIC*** is such an easy explanation for things. Sci-fi has it's own rules that often fall under the ***SCIENCE MAGIC*** umbrella, but bringing science into things often hurts my suspension of disbelief. My favorite explanation for zombies is black magic since that's the classic route to go. When it's a "scientific" reason for zombies, and the zombies are reanimated corpses, why don't all the zombies just rot and stop being able to move? Muscles are sort of important for movement.

All I gots to say is:
You either have to suspend it or hang it, nothing wrong with a little science magic, right DK?
I get more annoyed when obvious things are muddled or laws writers have made themselves are broken. Other than that, if it's a good story my belief is like the proverbial bridge.

That's right! In this case, "science" = reality/our natural world and "magic" =derivations from that standard. So a zompocalypse that is mostly governed by our reality, with a few exceptions, is fine by me. Even the most fantastic fantasies have some of our natural world mixed in. Like gravity (usually). Or light traveling faster than sound. And so on.
In the VERY short story (2 pages) by Karina Sumner-Smith, "When the Zombies Win," the zombie bodies are affected by natural things like rot, but they are driven by a dark force that survives even when they can no longer shamble around and kill stuff. Which makes for a spooky closing paragraph:
"One by one they will stop moving, flesh and bone and brain too broken to do anything more. And in that silence and stillness they will struggle - trapped and ruined, they will still yearn, still hunger, always reaching for that which was taken from them. That which they granted to so many of us, in such great numbers. To sleep. To sleep. To rest, just rest, and let the darkness come."
My exam is in a few hours, and I've forgotten everything. I might as well just write "I am a fish" 400 times on the paper and call it a night.

Hope that's not our fault, DeeK, & I'd still like to see that essay you promised us when and if possible. Heh. Cladistically speaking, you are a fish, so maybe you'll get a few points for that one. I read about a book called Your Inner Fish and was curious if anyone here has read it / has an opinion...
Indea- That's my number, dawg.
Kristi- Yeah, we're on that black magic page. Our zombies are tha magickest.

@chris= I read it years ago, and thought it was accurate and great.
I have some other books in the same vein I enjoyed but they are more sciency aka. probably not interesting to most folks.
