Hrmm I saw it, I liked some of the imagery. The main character needed more depth to me, she was just kooky and weird. Even the as the viewer I just felt embarrassed for her, there needed to be a reason to care about her. It was very much the alienated girl gets revenge, plus she killed a cat. How can you forgive that? Poor kitty. It reminded me of this hypertext I studied once though: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patchwork_Girl_(hypertext)It's worth checking out. What did you think of the movie?

Thank youuu! Now I can talk about movies on the internet!!! The best part of May was the blind kid glass scene, in my opinion. Dat imagery.
Though the main character is what I really wanted to discuss. First, I thought the actress did a great job being awkward. However, May seemed to be a vessel for a concept, rather than a fully developed person (as you pointed out, there wasn't really more to her beyond the creepy behavior). And the concept was apparently: people didn't accept her weird. This drove her to kill them and take their best pieces to finally build her perfect friend. Something something alienation something.
But I thought Polly's death was inconsistent with this concept, because the character actually accepted May, right down to the end. Obviously, real murderers don't need to stick to a theme when they're killing people. But May wasn't real at all. And the hypocrisy (May actually didn't accept Polly's unusual polyamorous lifestyle) harmed the movie as a piece of art, in my opinion. I don't think it was intentional hypocrisy, either. Maybe that's unfair on my part. Anyway, for something that has been lauded by horror fans and reviewers, it seemed like a pretty big fault.
And then there's this: the Polly/May/Anastasia thing felt partially like fanservice targeted at heterosexual men. I may be overly judgmental when it comes to stuff by Lucky McKee, though, mainly b/c of his contributions to the Masters of Horror series, which were - in my opinion - very uncool.
Also, Jara says the suture story was BS.

Hahaha if you wanted to give the director far too much credit, you could say that the vessel thing was because May was just a doll. I think their reasoning for killing Polly was her 'rejection' of May as her only companion and the mole. May's obsessive perfectionism when it came to others was a bit weird, given the rest of her character. It annoyed me, that with the early use of her as a theme in May's life, the mum just disappears after the intro. No explanation. Oh and definite fan service, they totally did the go evil/ murderous and then suddenly super sexy thing too. Man, lucky not too many people are aware of that beauty secret .

GASP You're right! I completely missed that May randomly became a stone cold sexy murderer.
Also, brava, I say! Really, that brussels sprout poem was inspired. I feel like it belongs in a book of creepy poetry for Halloween, the kind that's marketed for children but is actually so disturbing that it gives them nightmares.

In case anyone is interested in serial killer horror, the TV adaptation of Hannibal is pretty damned good. Laurence Fishburne is underwhelming, but Hugh Dancy and especially Mads Mikkelsen are brilliant. The set design and cinematography paint a perfectly creepy mood and that is enhanced by the script and acting. If you watch it, start at the beginning. It's a re-imagining of the story, with Lector being a consultant to the FBI and a friend of Wil Graham. I highly recommend it. I've watched a few episodes and you're right it's pretty awesome. My only gripe is with the portrayal of Wil Graham as on the autistic spectrum. I'm so over TV misrepresentation of it, it annoys the heck out of me. Although this one is one of the better ones I'll give it that. It's this whole idea that anyone who lacks normal social skills must therefore have a super power to compensate (AKA all are savants). It's just not realistic, it over-simplifies the issue and stops them being seen as human.

I didn't warm up to Wil's character until the final episodes of season one (especially the last eppie). He shone in the finale. But I totally get your gripe.

Facebook keeps suggesting B-grade horror movies to me that I may have seen. Anyways one that was actually good, at least from memory anyways...Was this 'vampire' movie called ' The Hamiltons'. It's worth seeing if anyone hasn't seen it. It goes off the traditional vampire thing quite a bit which is nice.

Hmm! I've been impressed by some "8 Films to Die For" entries, but haven't seen The Hamiltons yet. I'll check it out tomorrow. Right now, I'm watching "Atrocious" - dubbed in English, because I need to multitask.

Cockneys vs. Zombies. Coming out of the theater, a lady was overheard saying "It was better than Shaun of the Dead!" and my initial reaction was "I don't think so..." and Kelly's was "Maybe equal, plus and minus on both..." and on further reflection,
It may have been better than Shaun of the Dead. That's a high recommendation, but try not to have too high of expectations going in and it'll be very good fun for you.
Only quibble - nothing good for non-white people to do in the movie. These days, that feels like a bigger deal than it used to. But still, horror fans should go see it. So do.

So, the DVD place had The Hamiltons. But I couldn't find Cockneys vs. Zombies. And when I asked one of the employees (she knows me pretty well by now) if she could search for its availability, she asked, "Ew. What's a cockney?" She seemed grossed out. I think she mistook "cockney" for a term related to "cock" or something.
Well, they don't have the DVD.
Atrocious was disappointing. I do not recommend. Spoilers ahead:
Too many minutes wasted running through the forest with nothing happening. They also used the "mentally ill person was the monster all along" trope. Very, very clumsily. Okaaaay.

I guess it isn't out on DVD yet because it's still in theaters. Good luck with that!
So was Atrocious... atrocious?

It really is. I think Atrocious was also too "clever" for its own good.
Apparently, C vs V won't be released to US DVD until late fall (Oct or November). I whined to rental employee, "But it's already out in England" and she said, "then move to England" because she has attitude. We are BFF secretly, I swear.
Has anyone seen "The Lords of Salem"? I'm not usually a huge fan of Rob Zombie, but the trailers look really cool.

You could *cough* download it. I did a little while back, it was alright... Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention (I was multi-tasking a bit). For me it wasn't a scratch on Shaun of the dead but I get sick of the comparisons to be honest. Every zombie comedy gets compared to it these days. Zombieland certainly wasn't close. The beginning and ending of Shaun of the dead were clinchers for me, that was genius. I don't know maybe I should give Cockneys versus zombies another try...

@ Indea - Download a movie? Would you download a car? Wouldya? Wouldya? *cough* I may do that. The theater here has a really small selection. Movies tickets are just four dollars (so I wouldn't mind spending that), but we're stuck choosing from big budget all-American titles.

$4 for a movie ticket? Last movie I went to the ticket cost me $16.50 and that was concession. An indie place does $9 movie tickets once a week, which is pretty good but still... So it's really no surprise that downloading is big here ugh! EDIT: I would totally download a car!!
