Santi was called... It was a powerful compulsion. He could resist if his life depended on it - so he told himself - but a strange excitement came with it. He was going to meet the young aggressor in person.
He landed on the lip of a ship's venting tube, flexing his salmon-colored digits to grip the slick paint. His body reflexively righted itself with perfect balance in the stiff breeze and slight rock of the waves. He could see the other bird - a black and white martim pescador? - perched on another vent nearby. He regarded it with beady red eyes a moment longer, then changed.
Santi-
"I've heard of you. Theodore, was it?"
The bird slid into boy form.
Theodore-
"That's the one! Was it 'Sandy' I heard? Sorry for listening in, it was an important strategy."
Santi-
"You spied on us without Marchese's notice? Your powers are impressive."
Theodore-
"Well thanks! A little buggy told me. Você nasceu em Koromo? Eu ouço o sotaque, eu morava lá há anos. 'Nasci' lá. Isso pode ser uma maneira pretensiosa de falar com você, no entanto."
Santi-
"Sim, I would prefer Glennish. I do not have the talent for language some possess, I prefer to think in one at a time. So... Why the summons?"
Theodore-
"Have you heard of my mission? I don't know whether my reputation precedes me."
Santi-
"Something about challenging the Circle, seeking the destruction of the progenitors... Also that you are young enough to make your success seem unlikely. I really do not know what to make of you, or to say to you."
Theodore-
"How fond of this Marchese are you? I have to admit I saw a little more than would be polite... Forgive me. I've been in the same position myself, but I won't presume your feelings are the same."
Santi-
"..."
Santi-
"I'm listening."
Theodore-
"It's been my dream for nearly a century to take down the Circle and their cruel regime. Look now, they've created new young ones, how many years will they suffer? Or will they die unspeakably violent deaths before their time? I heard last night that at least one of them has met this end already. Tonight will be my first move, and I would like to ask if you would help me. There would be a reward, of course."
Theodore-
"It's true that I am young, but there are ways to improve yourself that many are unaware of. How would you like to become considerably more powerful?"
Santi-
"..."
Santi-
"I don't want bad things to happen to these youths, but it's hard for me to feel completely sympathetic. They're little more than humans at this point, children of a world that - if anything - makes them far better off than I was or am.
And I'd love to get out of this, but I can't believe it. You're just you. I'm just me. Even if everyone joins together against them, how? What are you talking about?"
Theodore-
"I could do it on my own, but I'd like to share the spoils of victory. I've done it before, you know. Marlette, Azarola, Del Bosque, Carmody... Those were the ones in Koromo. Perhaps you remember their names. They will never harm another. I will admit, that was decades ago, and they didn't have the alliance the Circle has. This battle won't be easy, but I will win, each one of these murderers who perishes will be a small victory. A single drop of justice compared to the oceans of torment they've left behind. But imagine the freedom."
A heavy long sword sat next to him, and he twisted the handle idly as he spoke.
Theodore-
"I'm not asking you to take up arms, not yet, anyway. I'd like your help with something simple. Just invite me in, and you will be rewarded. I hope you will join me, but you are free to do as you like. What do you say?"
Santi still couldn't believe it. He'd only met Marlette and Del Bosque and briefly when much younger, but had the impression they were at least as powerful as Marchese - Del Bosque even more so.
Santi-
"I still can't... It's too absurd... Damn!"
Santi-
"You're welcome in the Marchese Estate. I'm going to fly over and have a look."
Theodore-
"Thanks! I'll join you, what fun..."
