They were both less than perfect at Glennish, so it was easy to keep language simple and work things through. She had never seen the smokestack city with the mass executions, and asked a few questions about it. After he answered, she surmised Inka- "It was probably a city of devils. They do enjoy carnage."
Talking about a category of creature - devils - reminded Trevor of his last question of Torraighn. ((BTW I am not sure if I was clear enough that Torraighn's answer was to point him in the general direction of a book in the Aquarium here. Trevor could find it if so inclined.))

Once the conversation had ended, Trevor's eyes were back on the biggish book she had lightened. Although it had long lost its glow, the spot it sat was clear in his mwmory. As he had already been given sufficient permission to borrow Lepponen literature, Trevor took it without asking permission.
((Thanks for the clarification! Looking back that should have been pretty obvious to me, but my brain interpreted that exchange as being cut off, ending with Tory taking a leap into the book at the end because she lives in there. I guess the item hoarding tendencies computer game inventory systems encourage haven't followed me to the KFRPG. ))

Trevor had been told that the language of magic could be written, but that craftsmanship was important, and many works became unintelligible over time. This book was still quite magically easy to understand, despite the written characters employing ancient Litani. It was a book about the classifications of spirits, dated to about 300 years ago!

How useful! Trevor was quick to pore over the old bestiary.

It was clear the author had never seen the spirit world the way Trevor had, because their impression of spirits was that they were few in number, powerful, and unchanging. Trevor had seen them being numerous, weak, and recycled like cans - though he could imagine the more powerful spirits could be less transient.
Despite the author's naïveté on those issues, they did have some insight. Spirits are comprised of some intertwined essences, which even the language of magic was ill-suited to describe, but they tried just the same. Trevor perceived the essences as something like ideas or symbols, and that spirits would be built of these essences like expensive mixed drinks. A little "human artifice" here, a little "the color orange" or "bees" there.
The author, again, had a more simple understanding than was possible for a Lepponen vampire, assuming that spirits could be neatly categorized by the mixture of these essences. They defined divinities as having essences of ancient natural and elemental forces, "fairy folk" as having essences of mortal passions, "angels" being made of obedience and power, "devils" from corruption, and so on. Trevor knew that the spirit world was so diverse that these overarching types would probably be less neatly delineated in reality than the author described.
Nonetheless, he found something that clicked in his understanding. The author described a type of creature as "hearth spirits" and he knew immediately that's what Washy Wendy was. The author wrote that they had essences of the hearth and mortal designs, to Trevor that seemed true of a number of spirits he'd seen. The screaming light spirit at the mall and some of its fellows were surely hearth spirits. He could guess they all had something to do with human creations or human activities - especially those that are more utilitarian than recreational.
Reading a bit more deeply into that area, he found that many were "minor airts" that dwelled in single places, preserving the dwelling to the best of their powers. Others were nearly divinities of the mortal world, reigning over powerful buildings like temples, castles, and grand libraries. The author didn't know this, but Trevor figured they could also be less tied to a location than a broader aspect of mortal activity, such as "driving to work" or "bricklaying."

((Trevor's pleased with the book. Now what? Is there still a chance he can drop in on Ellen-Helen time?))

Inka- "Why did you choose this book?"
Florence walked in a bit unexpectedly.
Florence- "Hello, I just thought you might appreciate the rundown of what's going on tonight." Inka- "Um, I think magic is going on."
Florence- "Yes, but also vampire powers. Helen and Ellen put together a group to practice mesmerism. I don't know how close you were to the artistic side of things, but Wilhelm is having a script session. I'm not sure of what else might happen at this point. I know Gaston-Louis has a few of the youths, but it seemed invitation-only."

Inka- "Chrevor? Why does nobody stay with the magic? It is ever so fun."
Florence- "We do have forever, and you can't deny we use mesmerism quite often." Inka- "This is true. *siigh*"

Trevor - "Did you have something else in mind?" Trevor asked Inka even though he really was interested in mesmerism. He didn't want her feeling brushed aside.

Inka- "Oh, it's OK. You have fun with your friends."
Florence- "Good, I'm sure it won't take all night.""
