The fifty year old silver two-door Ruston Thunder rumbled along nicely toward the University District. Yesterday afternoon, they had traveled the reverse of this route, coming to the place where they would die. Tonight, August drove Quinn and Santi toward the place where the youngest vampires once lived. They could see the heat of its engine wisp around the corners of the hood and disintegrate under abuse from the rain. Santi- "Have you ever driven here, August? I understand many youths and foreign visitors rely on public transportation and taxis."
This dude was in the back seat:

August was focusing on the road, nursing the speed limit and trying not to get distracted by the displays of heat against the downpour. At least without breath or body heat, there was no perspiration to worry about on the windows. He felt a little like he was in an old detective movie although rain was usually a sign they were gonna die. No fear of that now. It was odd driving back this way, back to the place where he'd been alive in just a day ago. He tried to bite down on the dull ache of his own death. Life was there to be enjoyed no matter the form and there were plenty of cool things, plus all his close friends. What more could you really ask for? “Nah not much but I'm familiar enough. Been in Glenland a couple years now. I was a public transport kinda guy alright. Everything I needed was right by the academy anyways, no point wasting fuel and money ya know? A bike could have been cool though. So do ya hang around the uni district much?” He made small gestures keeping his hands on the wheel.

Quinn relaxed in the back, watching the world go by and listening idly to the conversation. He put a hand on the window as an idle fancy to see if it would fog up around his fingertips. Quinn- "I was a public transport man, myself. I preferred walking, though." He knew how to drive, of course, he just didn't waste money on owning one since he more or less split from his family.

Santi- "I don't get out often, but when I do, it's rarely the University District. I spend some time with friends at the aquarium, the observatory, a few other favorite places. Vitus manages to drag me out to ball games sometimes."
He was clearly a bit more relaxed than at the party, but had his eyes open for trouble. Did he expect something?

August was too focused on the road to notice Santi's behaviour, he smiled and continued talking."Fieldball huh? I'm into the rifle range myself, darn! Guess I can't go there anymore though. Do ya know if there's another place to go shooting in Harlan?"

Quinn- "Other favourite places? Where else do you enjoy going then, Santi?" Being in the back as he was, Quinn didn't notice Santi's apparent trouble-watching either.

Santi- "Tackleball, actually. The Ballers... I enjoy privacy - the company of a select few - so I go to places humans can't. Rooftops and such... Isn't shooting a rural activity? Maybe somewhere in the suburbs."
The youngsters couldn't help be distracted by a little car rolling by that looked like it had a fire under the hood and so much heat coming out of the exhaust pipe it looked like a rocket engine. The rain tore hundreds of tiny holes in the foxfire.

Quinn- "Aside from the tackleball all of that sounds quite lovely, actually. I always enjoyed my peace and solitude before. There's nothing quite like escaping for a short while, is there?" Quinn's eyes were drawn to the fire and he blinked in surprise, slightly mesmerized. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to this supernatural sight.

"Quite lovely huh? So ya like the idea of rifle practice, Q? I could teach ya! Heck, I'd love to. Not many Glens are into that. Bombaroo!"

Quinn- "Amusing as the thought is, I'm not a large man. The recoil from one of those monstrosities would plant me flat on my considerably-more-pasty backside, I'm afraid."

"S'not monstrosities, they're pieces of mechanical wonderment. Not everyone understands them…" August shook his head as the fire bugged car passed them."Hey Santi, what's with the flaming cars and cabbies? Anyway to turn that off or something?"

Quinn resisted the urge to roll his eyes at his delightfully sensitive friend. Quinn- "I only meant that they're large, August. Monstrous as in 'too big for me'."

Santi- "Oh, yes. You can see heat. If you focus on something or someone, you can bring out their face - see them through the fire. But it's no good for stuff in your peripheral vision. You're stuck with that until dawn... You think that guy's car was over-heating? A shame the rain isn't much help, the way new cars are all sealed up."
They still had a little ways to the University District... and the Babies!

Quinn- "Why do our eyes even do that? Is it some way of distinguishing... well...prey, as it were? As it stands, it's a bit overwhelming."

"Haha..ha prey. They're just people Q, just people. Only carnivores have prey. Yeah, but it might make recognising them a little harder though, I was hoping there was more of a knack. Let's just hope none of me mates stick to the peripheries like ninjas. Some of them do wear dark clothes and like shadows. Maybe I should go in disguise?"
