Vitus- "Nothing. We're just... Out of sorts today. Keeping odd hours. Yes..."
Jack- "..."

Scratch the normality - Something wasn't right with these two. Vitus was one piss-poor liar. Leo figured this was her cue to move onto the next table."I see.. I enjoyed our little chat, but I guess I have to move on. I hope you two have a good rest of the night!" She stood up and gave one last friendly albeit awkward smile to the two, before walking away.

Vitus- "Talking a bit fast there. Have a seat, relax. I'm Vitus, Jack- this is Jack." "Hi, yeah we're just... You know, these type of things."
Eli- "Oh yeah, I know. That's why I'm fairly drunk right now. If I can say that. Am I fired now?"

Vitus- "Fired? Er, like from a job?" Jack- "Uhm, nah I think we'd all be a little drunk right now if we could be."
Eli- "Ahhh no drinking on the job, hm? That's rough, send you out here and can't even have some fun."
Eli- "You guys from a firm or something? The last people were terribly mysterious."

Vitus- "As in attorneys? Not quite." Jack- "..."
Eli- "Haha, well, I was thinking more like a talent agency or graphic design, but... maybe you can just tell me about yourselves then. How do you know each other?"
Jack- Vitus- "I'll let you field that one." "Well, brothers of a sort. Why don't you tell us about yourself?"

Eli- "The mystery continues... But, okay. I'm just some dork who's good at digital painting and I'm beginning to think you guys aren't in the market for some storyboards, are you?"
Eli- "I mean, I can do other stuff. What's your art-poison? And if not art-- I mean, the last people joked about paid torture- on-demand, and now I'm starting to feel nervous..."
Vitus- "Ah. You must've spoken with Dragomir and Sarah. Well, we're not especially into the 'B.D.S.M.', I mean, not paying for it. Which is neither here nor there, I mean, nothing to do with whatever we're doing here." Jack- "Yikes..."
Eli- "Wah, those aren't even the people I'm talking about!"
Eli- "Must be a trendy pastime I'm not up on. Anywayyy..."
Eli- "You guys are kinda driving me crazy right now. Alright, if we aren't talking shop, what should we talk about? I'm in it to win... whatever... this game is... So, something I could do to improve your mood? Besides going away, 'cause... the aforementioned winning thing."
{originally} Vitus- "The... arts...?"
Vitus- "Yes. The arts. Well, what's not to love? It's a foundational aspect of culture, though it went unrecognized as such for such a long time. You... erm, Jack, you like the arts, right?"
Jack- "True."'Ugh, these guys are clueless. Are they even playing the same 'game' as everyone else?''
"Some people believe the arts aren't as appreciated as much as they should be, even today. What do you think about that?" Apparently, this was Eli's chance to turn the tables on the game, if only slightly. He felt a little...predatory? But it was a necessary evil. It was either this, or get some air. And somehow he doubted he would be getting out of this ballroom as easily as he did the dining room.

Vitus- "Some of us have had a hard time of things recently, and would find any levity to be nearly impossible. Thank you for the offer, though." Jack- "Yeah, it's kind of a dismal night."
Eli- "Sorry about that. Well, I'm nothing if not..."
Eli- "Lev... it..able."
Eli- "Let's just shoot the shit then. What's the deal with these other people? I'm not talking Lucy Lips styled dirt, but anything I should look out for? Tell me something good, and I'll tell you about the kids on my side of the table."
Jack- "Heh, you read that? I thought Vitus- only jumped-up harpies were "Be kind, Jack." into that column." Eli- "I never said I wasn't a jumped-up harpy. Go on, then..."
{originally} Jack- "...Oh yeah. Sure. You should talk to Vitus about that stuff.
Vitus- "It's true that the arts were once a more significant aspect of culture. Though perhaps we need to expand what our definition of 'art' is. Film, music, even... computer... things."
Jack- "Sheesh."
Vitus- "Hey, I don't know about this computer business as well as you kids, I'll admit it."
He looked like he was hardly over 20. Jack- "Aaaanyway... Sorry, I don't know a whole about art, honestly. I've dated some artists before, but that's about the extent of my knowledge. Unless newspaper comics count, and I can tell you all about them. So what do you like to do for fun? I mean, forgetting all the arts and business."
Jack seemed pretty obviously gay, Eli came to realize. Those two had a hetero level of distance between them though. 'Computers as art? Dad would like this guy.'
"Interesting that you include computers in your statement. Not so many people see it that way."
"I agree, personally. And if it makes things easier, you can see computer science as a relative of mathematics. Using that logic to solve problems... Some branches involve doing things similar to making proofs in math, in some ways. And it requires a lot of creativity. Especially when you talk about software engineering, the algorithms a programmer creates...some of them really are things of beauty." 'Ha! Dad would be proud.' "But enough about that. What do I do for fun? I swim, I play and sometimes help make games. Oh, and I party...in a usually more conventional fashion than this, anyways. What about you?"

Vitus- "So just some advice then? What to watch out for? You think there's anything we need to watch out for in your fellows?" Jack- "Heh, I think he may be looking for 'the dirt' as they say. "
Eli- "That's right, and well... we may look like a cheery bunch, but they were practically pulling switchblades back at the pool. I mean--"
Eli- "Yeah, they're totally dangerous. Certainly too wild to deserve winning any kind of flower. Just keep that between me and you."
Eli- "So yes, this dirt. A pparently BDSM is all the rage, so that's not much of a revelation. What could be more outrageous than that? Beat that and then I'l tell you which of us actually has a switchblade. It's not me, don't worry." {originally} Both of them perked up a little at Eli's last few sentences, for different reasons. Vitus- "Oh I see! Now, I know hardly anything about this modern technology but what you were saying really reminds me of the Linearists of the last century, divinity and beauty derived from logic. Logic being the most pure form of beauty because it is removed from the machinations of human interference..."
(( The original Eli is lost from here for a bit, but safe to assume he was being hella boring with Vitus. ))
Jack- "*cough* Anyway... what you were saying a few minutes ago, games. Video games? That's pretty cool. I love the whole Monkey Adventure franchise. Long time fan. Well, as for me... I lie around and try to do as little as possible mostly. Playing games, ripping on people that I don't like, low key partying... life's too busy for much of that though, sadly. Used to smoke the fat blunts but I'm reformed, I guess. Vitus reads all the books."
Vitus- "Basically."
Jack- "So weird question... I guess we're in the position to ask them, huh? So, if things were going to work out for you in life-- nothing too spectacular, not like the lottery, but just things going like you'd expect and like you'd hope. What would you do? How would the rest of your life go?"

Vitus- "That's really... intense. Gossip that can outdo the stiletto? Mmm..." Jack- "I like this challenge. Hm, Darren did all the heroin and that tiny lady next to him used her guru powers to get him on the straight and narrow. Bonus - Nick the Cutter has probably killed a man just to watch him Vitus- die. Vitus, you know the original crew better." "OK, two things: We don't want to scare anyone unduly, so let it be known that the mobster is on a short leash, not to worry about. And for my addition to the gossip, I'll say Darren found out Helen doesn't have guru powers and, while free of opiate addiction, probably doesn't appreciate the ruse."
Eli- "Wow! That's pretty--" Eli- "...S'good, s'good... Hm."
Eli- "Well, I know at least one of those tall punk kids has a knife, but now that I think about it, both of them probably do. Pretty sure they'll just brandish 'em, I haven't seen anyone get the blade. Not that I've hung out with them after hours..."
Eli- "So okay, what's the dirt on you two? Maybe I should hear it here first rather than elsewhere..."
{originally} (( Eli droned on about his fave vidya game series, Blazing Seal. ))
Jack- "Hooo... my ex really liked that series. Too much for me..."
Vitus- "Yes I always enjoy reading suggestions. I may have to start at the beginning though. Lately I'm working my way through Aegenian poetry."
(( After Eli laid out his life goals... ))
Jack- "Hm..."
Vitus- "I'm surprised young people of today are still interested in painting. It used to be the big thing before the Starkists. Is it making a return?"
(( Eli had to have an opinion about poetry and nations. ))

Vitus- "Hey, is this going to be the thing? Is this what the game is going to be? Not sure it's a good idea. Some people are sensitive about things. I don't know, Eli." Jack- "Hahaha, we aren't going to drop the juicy stuff just because you asked. Nice try."
Eli- "Aw nuts. Well... To be honest, I'm not sure what we're supposed to do in this game."
Eli- "Okay how about this-- if someone was talking to you in this circumstance, what would impress you the most?
Eli- "Hypothetically..."
{originally}
Jack- "Mm-hm."
Vitus- "I get the feeling most Aegenians are into Bribois poetry and the Aegenian stuff is only beloved of stale Glennish scholars. Which is a shame, because it speaks to the universal conditions of humanity so much more effectively. Like 'Waiting' by Agime Agembe. Brilliant precisely because it is tedious... Of course, I'm speaking of the post-Southernist traditions. The pastoral works of the southwest nations were quite the opposite.
Mm. How you use it. I suppose I was imagining you to be working in a representational style, but that would be an assumption. Are you more contemporary, using paint to construct bare abstractions? I think that can be brilliant, in a way. The post-Starkist painters created a demand for decorative art that was moribund not a decade before. It brings some life to a surface without saying anything at all, really allows people to conduct their lives in a decorated space without needing to engage or learn to ignore the faces on the wall... So how did you come to be a painter?" Clearly the guy with the easiest time talking here was the more boring of the two. Such is life.
(( Eli had some opinions about shit and bragged on his photorealisms. ))

Vitus- "...It's unfortunate you're kind of a test case. I should have a ready answer for this sort of question and I do not. The whole affair is very last minute. Let's say, a certain bravery, stoicism that doesn't discard one's humanity. Jack's pretty good for that, if a bit sassy." Jack- "Hahaha, why would you ever say that? I'm always polite. Hm, for me... Be funny, but don't be a total bitch. Know when to stop talking. Don't be an uptight weenie. "
Eli- "Well, what a coincidence! I'm well regarded as a funny, polite, stoically brave and laid-back non-weenie. Ask anyone! And now I am shutting my mouth." Jack- "Sure... Well now that you've wheedled that stuff Vitus- out of us, I guess we need to ask you questions." "Oh sure. 'Digital painting' and 'storyboards' doesn't tell me much about your art. What's your favorite subject matter?" Eli- "Ah, well... I mostly do commissions now. I try to come up with something clever but I guess I'm not very deep. This movie was one of the more interesting projects. Normally it's just people's furso-- uh, 'original characters.' "
Eli- "If I could do anything... It'd be cool to do all that super realistic portraiture, but you have to be really good or then it's just boring, I guess." Vitus- "Might be that it's photorealism is overrated. It's not fashionable, even with some of the young people that think of themselves as pursuing it. Most of them are actually practicing more neoclassic or romantic techniques, with an overlay of urban aesthetic."
Jack- "I can draw a cat."
Eli- " *sigh* I've drawn way too many cats."
Eli- "Yeah I think it might just be an extension of preteens wanting to draw cute rockstars in their notebooks. It's fun to do, but not much to look at."
Eli- "But I'm cool with finding the smart people and riding their coattails into the sunset. Long as I get that green, amirite?"
{originally}
Vitus- "Well, that is great, but it seems like more of an argument for why being a realistic painter is good for you as the artist, but doesn't speak to why someone should like photorealism as an art observer. None of the old masters like Zegher were photorealists - it's something that was a result of the invention of photography, after all. How would you answer the criticism - often leveled at photorealists - that there is no reason to paint something if the end result is the same as a photograph. I've seen large format photography that evoked much of the feeling of the beauty of small details that you describe and surely took less effort on the part the artist - think Dolores Liebweil and Ansor Hermann. I hope that doesn't come off as aggressively critical. I'm curious what your response would be because I anticipate that it may be a quite reasonable one that I have not heard before."
Jack- "*sigh*"
((And now we come to the stuff I'm really sad was deleted: What kind of juicy stank BS did Eli use to defend photorealism as a 2kewl thing. Anyhow, he done that, then hit Vitus up for his contact info like a thirsty bitch.))

Jack looked like 'hmmm' about something Eli said, and lit a cigarette. Vitus- "I guess that fits the winning criteria." Jack- "Is that nail polish or just paint on your thumb?"
Eli- "Oh! Oh, I... forgot that was there."
Eli- "I didn't know we were going to a party-- well, a real party-- when I woke up this afternoon, obviously. Nah it's--"
Eli- "It's for cool fashion. Because I'm cool."

Eli- "I'm not very fashionable, well, you can probably tell. I'd like to work on it but... I dunno, not enough money, too lazy. I wouldn't have worn this lame shirt if I knew--"
Eli- "I guess one should always expect to be whisked away to glamorous parties. I am a fool."

Vitus- "Oh it's alright. My tweed isn't Jack- exactly cutting the muster." "Somehow I can relate to your situation, getting whisked away into--" Jack- "Eli, if you.... if something bad happened, like-- Your future plans were thrown out the window, What would you do? Could you handle it?" Vitus- "Not that anything's going to happen! You know... just hypothetically."
Eli- "Whoa, that's the second time someone asked me something like that."
Eli- "Err... Is that a new one they pass around HR or something? I'm kinda not into it. Job interviews are menacing enough as is."
