((I'm especially keen to see if anything interesting comes out of a conversation between Colqhoun and Alex, and to a lesser extent Micah...))

Ashley- "Colqhoun, is it? I did not catch the whole story, but I have the sense that you don't want to talk about it. How many are in this colony? And who is the leader?" He walks to one side, flanking Patti in the meanwhile.(I don't know how much of the conversation previous he had been filled in on)

Patti stayed within earshot, but could only hear Ashley's side of the conversation over the bustle of the traveling bodies - footfalls in the snow, bags bumping against dead cars, shrieks of annoyed crows, Davin talking with Micah about coffee... Colqhoun- "It is a terrible story... It's a terrible reality, and you'll see for yourself. When I left this morning, all that remained were Pastor Mark and three from his business team."
Davin- "...Really so much better with coconut milk. I wonder how long that stuff keeps..." A zombie smacked a window near Colqhoun and he didn't flinch, just ambling by the helpless creature.

Ashley- Ashley cringes, but nods and pats his shoulder."That is terrible. I'm sorry that that happened to you. Did you notice them casting any spells, or was that the only thing that happened?" He is not sure what he meant by that, but perhaps it meant cannibalism. The man seemed genuine but anything could be a trap, even allowing out survivors. In some ways he wished he brought a bigger team.He also decided cannibalism didn't mix with coconut milk.

Colqhoun- "...I was about to laugh at you for thinking spells are real, but now I have to laugh at myself. HA. But no, of course not. Exodus 22 ... something, 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'..."
Davin- "...You guys are experts, I know, in a way we're slumming over in 320. Not that I'd ever want to imply the staff at 320 isn't amazing, it's hard work and I thank them for it, but you guys..." Aurora was a slow hill climb, and while people's bodies heated with the exertion, the cold seemed to increase in the air, threatening exposed skin. The roads that had been wet when they set out seemed more crisp beneath the snow, and footfalls met with crunching noises. Noises of the world receded behind the sounds of their breath and crunch of snow.

Alex had been trudging behind the men who were NOT discussing coffee (he never drank super caffeinated beverages, after all)." It's twenty-two eighteen." He made a perturbed sort of expression. " But in the Douay-Rheims Bible, witch is translated as wizard. Same difference, I guess. Um. I am worried that we're walking into a trap. Josh, the man who ... passed first ... God rest his soul ... he was possibly attacked. Intentionally killed. A head injury, I bet, just like the second victim. I don't know anything about this so-called Pastor Mark. He seems like a horrible monster, to be frank. But do you think he was capable of murder all that time ago? Huh. This is for seriously suspicious." Somehow, his whisper transformed into a conversational-loud tone. It was inevitable, but he tried!

“....Yeah, they'll soon pick it up no worries. You're always welcome to visit 408 for a bite for old times sake. You used to fucking live there didn't you? Before the shit went down...”
Micah tried not to snort in derision when Devon said they were slumming it, it must be tough living in hoity toity condos and drinking wine in fancy glasses. He kept a bit of an eye on the pastor as he chatted, he couldn't help feeling a bit paranoid about the whole thing. He noted uneasily the way Calqhoun seemed so relaxed over zombies, hadn't they been living sheltered in the church for fucking months? Zombies still made Micah a little queasy sometimes even now. He wasn't surprised that he'd paired off with Ashley. They were probably swapping favourite bible verses or something.

Ashley- "I don't think the rest of what they are doing is particularly Word-friendly, and it seems that sorcery is quite real." He wasn't really sure what they were going to do in the meantime, and especially when they met the cannibals. What will they do then? Tell them to kindly stop being cannibals? Or somehow force out their ghoulish nature?"I don't know, tell me about Pastor Mark, Alex, I don't know anything about the situation we're going to walk into."

Colqhoun- "Of course Josh was murdered... Didn't think of it at the time, but it's obvious now... The word... Maybe so, but it's not like he'd magically figure out how to be a wizard because he was starving in a room full of bibles for several months... I find it hard to believe you haven't heard of Pastor Mark. He was kind of a big deal ... back then..."
Colqhoun- "...Think I'm done talking for now."
Davin- "Yes I did. It was really amazing to see the landlady come back. I didn't know the other tenants very well, though - Stevie and Ben, Zoe's family, Derek's girlfriend..." The trees grew a bit thicker at the sides of the road. Occasionally they would spot a human, but the people in this neighborhood (technically part of Queen Anne) were much more antisocial than those in Belltown had been. They avoided eye contact and hustled away.
The sky became a bit stranger - bright, but opaque, like it was a luminous elder god, pregnant with ten trillion snowflakes. The air was stiff and cold. The travelers could see their breath too clearly. Colqhoun managed to avoid conversations for a while.
The road sloped down a short way, more ancient accidents cluttered the roads and sidewalks, and from behind uncontrolled boughs of evergreen, the Aurora Bridge appeared. Davin lit a road flare, glanced over his shoulder at the crew, then stepped onto the bridge.
The Aurora Bridge originated and ended well over land, only crossing water for some modest length in the middle. That mean most of the old suicide attempts ended on concrete or in trees down below. There was a sense people should stay quiet to listen for dark ghosts, but there was nothing in sight, and it just felt maddening. ((Anyone want to talk to anyone else? Do anything else?))

Patti tried to keep the group close enough that nobody was going to get snuck up on without someone else seeing it first."Don't forget to check low too. These things might come up through the seams once we get to the elevated road section." She felt a little silly with a torch going in the middle of the day, but ghosts were ghosts and she wasn't about to get got by one of them creepy fuckers.
She swept the flare low in front of her and occasionally raised it to minimize shadows that might conceal a dark ghost.

Ashley- Ashley also lit up a torch. While equally silly, he felt better doing so, also Patti did it, which made him feel better about it. He wasn't sure who the mission leader was today, but he put his trust in Patti and Davin in the meantime."..Ah...I...don't read much.." He comments to Colqhoun/

Micah was feeling really tense, he kept a paranoid eye open looking twice at every shadow. He tried filling the odd emptiness with chatter. It was comforting that Patti and Ash were taking the charge with flares though. “...So your girlfriend's called Sandy and your cat, that must get fucking awkward. How do you cope?”

Davin- "Sandy's my cat. Eh... and my girlfriend's name too. Yeah, it's old." The flares hissed loudly, until the wind over the bridge whipped up, and drowned out softer noises. Annoyingly, the wind's keening was sounding like a full-on ghost howl, confounding efforts to stay alert for the miserable things.
It had been about six minutes since Colqhoun said he didn't want to talk anymore, when the fellows started back in on him. But he didn't seem overly annoyed. It was like the wind was carrying his attention away, or he couldn't quite hear them and didn't care. Colqhoun- "I don't know what I expected to find when I left there this morning... There's so many survivors. People everywhere, mostly hiding... Still. So many people..." Davin slowed for a moment to take in the view. It was breathtaking, being this far above the world. Boats, trees, and and buildings far below were flocked with white. The water looked like slowly undulating aluminum foil. Wind blasted little flakes around them, and they could watch them tumble away into invisibility below. He let out a little whistle, and kept on.

Something about the way he said "so many people" reminded Patti of the first time she took the guys down to Lake Union for a goose hunt... so many geese...
