GREETINGS! It is I, the inimitable and illimitable Christopher - second in command of Kingfisher-related doings. I hereby begin a discussion board for the Kingfisher Role-Playing Game, which is to begin at an undefined date in the not-too-distant future. If you are considering playing, or just hanging out on The Kingfisher's official forum more often, please start an account here, and then hop into this discussion! Ask any questions you have, talk to other people who have played here before. Discuss character ideas, if you like. Whatever you will, as long as it's relevant to the topic. As I consider this prospect of running the events of The Kingfisher as a role-playing game, I find it artistically interesting. The Kingfisher began as a collaborative story project between Kelly and myself, using text and pictures drawn into sketchbooks, as seen below. In a sense, a role-playing game is also an exercise in collaborative storytelling. Why is that interesting to me? It means that we would, in running this game, be re-iterating the project as a kind of alternate universe. And we've done that before. When we finished the main story arc that became The Kingfisher comic, we had a notion to start over the events from scratch, but with a twist. In one version, Demetri won Jack in the initial game. We did it again with a world where Jack lost the game and ended up hospitalized as a mortal. Demetri beat Theodore in that version, and turned Jack in the settled aftermath - in a much more consensual way. Those alternate versions were played with before the Kingfisher comic was even begun in 2010. Some elements of them were written into the comic, which made the comic an alternate version of its own. So... In a sense, this is a story that has been told repeatedly with variation - like a Rashomon where each version was both different and true. And that means the RPG version would join the others as a new version - both different and equally valid to the rest. And that means you can, in your way, be a part of the storytelling of The Kingfisher Universe - of the canon. How do you like that?

Some quick information about the game we're planning: * It's a role playing game, but not the kind with dice and stats. Generally it's story-telling with a group. * The game will start at the beginning of the KF story, but a week after Jack and company have been turned into vampires. There is a major plot twist which is a secret! You will get to interact with all the usual KF characters for the most part. * Your characters will be original, and our theme is for the characters to be an indie film crew who just made a student film about vampires. We already have two female stars, a writer/director, an extra and an editor. This leaves lots of other roles in the film: other extras, makeup artists, producers, set painters, concept artist, costume designers, caterers, camera operator, cinematographer, special effects, soundtrack, 'best boys' (whatever those are.) Etc etc. You can design your character, and we can help them fit in. Maybe they are just a friend to another character or have some other role that connects them. * We have a limited number of slots so sign in here ASAP and get your name in the hat!So discuss as thou will!

It begins... ;D
Those books look like they carry the wonders of the universe. ;D Who's the second guy next to Jack in the face portraits? Is it an early Karl?
Hey, I was thinking maybe we should give a small run down of our characters to give other peeps examples and ways of connecting their own peeps if they so wish?

Yeah, good idea. Short intro of your characters, no need to go into every detail, but name, role in the movie, where you go to college or work or both. BTW, that was Ryder before his likeness was more worked out.

My character:
August Hayes
Antearctan
Age:25
Writer/ Director
Goes to a fancy Art school (experimental film) learning how to badly film nudity and pointlessly shocking images. He's a friendly guy and can be a bit of a pushover, always sticks up for the little guy,

My character:
Jun "Trevor" Kato 加藤純
Kohonese
Age: 21
Editor
Trevor is studying abroad on a scholarship to become an entomologist. His own filmography that attracted the crew to recruit him as an editor were short scientific documentaries. Trevor is legitimately friendly, although his actions are calculated and rarely entirely innocent. He has a manipulative streak but is relatively harmless.

Ru "Knight" (pseudonym given by the director)
Age: 23
Glenland
Actor
Former record store employee. Met with August at a film festival and August cast Ru as the vampire then and there with Val. Ru may be a little socially awkward, shy and excitable but is eager to please and is honored to be part of this (amazing?) film, and has decided to method-act being a vampire while not filming.

Kristi is prescribed skeletons- That universe was a bit glum, though funny & not nearly as depressing as the results of Demetri getting his way sooner... danielle- Fantastic! Looking forward to it.

Name: Sophie, 24
Fashion design student, formerly in theatrical costuming. (Originally from South Africa?*) Queer, chain-smoker, slightly crass but thoughtful, and has a wide circle of connections. Works at a shitty local pizza/beer joint. Has been dealing weed small-time for years (maybe an old associate of Jack's?). She's not sure how to steer the costuming on the film in a more Keith Haring/ rave/ psychedelia aesthetic, but by god she's determined.
* Can I do this? Can I draw a Kingfisherverse equivalent?

Danielle- *Yes! There isn't an exact equivalent in part because Kelly decided the KF world was not Earth to get out of doing research, and in part because the equivalent of Africa in this world was never colonized by Europeans. The name isn't visible on our world map, but a mid-sized nation on the southern coast of Aegenia called "Zaka-Ti Nation" is supposed to have cultures similar to South African indigenous people. Key differences to remember for the KFiverse- >Never colonized. No apartheid. >Developed. At least somewhat. The reason Aegenia was never colonized is that is was never so out of touch with Nourian that it became "mysterious and primitive" to the Nourians. Technology and trade with Nourian and other places was continuous, so they never ended up at a severe economic and military imbalance to facilitate that exploitation. So they'll have cities, farms, mines, labor disputes, office jobs, and so on of their own... >...Which of course are all things S. Africa has today, but in this world it would have been in a natural outgrowth of their indigenous culture & international exchange, rather than a legacy of brutality followed by growing pains. >Probably a constitutional monarchy or democracy. The seat of democracy in this world is the nearby Federation of Aegenian Nations, which a few hundred years ago defended itself from monarchy by going on the offense, kind of like Napoleonic France. >Other than that, you can actually make up a lot of details yourself! If you make up anything overtly inspired by a real life equivalent, make sure the name and particulars are different enough to keep a classy distance from parody. I get the impression the film was in black and white so Sophie'd probably face a little disappointment on that front, but high contrast would still be on the table.

Yay, fresh blood muwahaha! ;D Welcome Danielle. It is indeed in the black and white because it's totes art house and saves on fake blood costs. Instead it's chocolate syrup, which is additionally delicious! Then as the funds pool, corn syrup with dye.
