OK, a few ideas came to me yesterday.
One) "A Nihilist Reads Camus." A nihilistic teen reads Camus's "The Myth of Sisyphus" for the first time, at the behest of a philosophy teacher. As they go through it, they react to it in thoughts and actions, while surreal hijinx ensue. The gimmick: I'll be reading the book for myself for the first time and not know how it ends until the character in my book does.
Two) "Untitled." I invented a needlessly baroque sci-fi / fantasy setting where magic is real and increases in power as the Universe ages and nears heat death. It's still nowhere near heat death time, but it's much more wacky than the 20th century was. An interstellar civilization of humans fell apart leaving scattered worlds with increasingly little in common. On one particular magic-plagued world, things are post-apocalyptic, psychic mutants are segregated socially, but also used as mercenary warriors to fight monsters 'n' shit. So an old guy gets his hypocrisy exposed and courage tested just as the world is invaded by vampires that had previously been chased off to the asteroid belt. Hijinx ensue.
Whatchu think? Especially of mutation is magic trope, DeeK, haha. ;D

I was contemplating my Magna Carta, but the more I thought about, the more I realized I don't really know what I would put in there on either side. Also, after reading other folks's, I've come to the conclusion that I would most probably unintentionally offend everyone with more than my inability to differentiate my characters in dialogue.

@ Christopher - I accidentally posted my mutation/magic thoughts in the Magna Carta thread Long story short, I have no problems with psychic mutants in the post-apocalyptic future. That actually sounds really cool. Actually, both of those ideas interest me. As somebody who was attached to the absurdism philosophy during my teenage years, and as a fan of the surreal, I'd also be interested in your nihilist reads camus project. Haha, I just made the most helpful comment evar. "OMG I like everything! Do everything!"

Brett- I have the same writing weakness, so we'll see how dat goes. But as for offense, Kelly and I have directly opposed interests on a few of our points. Would you only like to read maximum depressing kitchen sink dramas against a backdrop of ethnic cleansing in the balkans? Say so! No one will beat you up for it.
DeeK-
Thanks for the encouragement anyhow. That would be weird to combo the concepts... Too complicated! Or just complicated enuf?

Now I'm starting to lean toward not doing the more complicated SF setting... I just don't know. Anyhow, ANOTHER BIG ISSUE!Apparently, sharing your novel before finished - aside from the odd excerpt - is heavily discouraged. It puts you at a high risk of succumbing to your inner editor, when NaNo is supposed to be an edit-free first draft. Nonetheless, I really want to post my novel as I go here. Thoughts and opinions? Also of note - there's a company that will give you two free paperback copies of your book if you win! They give you a coupon code thingus and a few months in which to edit, and you just have to pay for shipping or whatever. That's fun. nanowrimo.org/forums/special-offers-and-greetings-from-nano-sponsors/threads/119812

Free books! That's awesome!
Hm, premature editing could be a problem, but I think with enough resolve to finish the draft, it's fine to post work in progress. Maybe a rule that's like, "during November, there shall be-eth no criticism beyond encouragement to continue writing" would be helpful.

Would a series of short stories be against the spirit?

Yes it would, though if they were connected and fed into some kind of unified ending, you'd squeak in. Incidentally, the NaNoWriMo forum is OK with people bending the rules, as long as you clearly identify yourself as a "rebel."

@chris- I'm with Deek both stories sound really cool but I'm more curious about the first idea, I think it could turn into quite a rollicking tale and yeah, slightly less complicated than a whole Scifi world.

I'm a gosh darn mudder hawking rebel forever and always. I instead shall participate in my brand new Something Something Short Story Month (SoSoShoMo). It's for working on as many or as few shorts as one desires, long as they get done.
REBELS UNITE!

nanowrimo.org/forums/nano-rebelsThat's a hangout for rule-breakas on the official NaNo forum. Shouldn't your thing be SoSoShoStoMo? And apparently, Indea is drunk. It's OK. We still love you.
