During college, I once volunteered to screen/edit stories for a minor student literary mag. As the person who read submissions, one reoccurring theme that became extremely annoying was "young rich person is burdened by upper class responsibilities, like going to country club parties or wearing the best fashion, and eventually realizes that the lower class is truly free wooohoo!" It was a bizarre niche variation of the "noble savage" trope. For some reason, the "chosen one" theme rubs me the wrong way most especially. I can't find the words to explain why, though. Edit: Oh, wow, the Ultimates was just ... SO EDGY!!1!!1111!!!11!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to enjoy reading this blog post analysis.

How to know if you're old: Do you remember when edgy meant nervous? I do.
Also, the "lower class is truly free!" trope has gotten a lot of play in Hollywood, too. The fuck is up with that? Unto my fellow person what grew up with the roaches, I say 2helwitdat.
Chosen one - It's a story that dangerous people have sometimes incorporated into their own personal narratives, like Charlie Manson and Pat Robertson. Could that be what's bothersome about it?

Oh my gosh. Need to read through everything now. I've been busy with wedding stuff and work so I've been away for a while, but I am so doing it. I think I'm going to progressively list my favorite suggestions on this post. :-) List: First up: Secret Ceramic Rabbit Gargoyle Carnival mystery. Number two: Fallen Old Lady Rap Star that's a Sentient Cauliflower and Brussels Sprout Hybrid (A.K.A. MC Brusseliflower Sprout) will be a second story. Cauliflower and Brussels are in the same family, so it's perfect! Hmm. Just realized that might not be so much horror.

OK, none of my business (don't answer if not comfortable), but did your XY parent transition to ladiness, followed by your XX parent having a lesbian wedding? Or was there some other means of triple-momming? That's pretty amazing.

My mother (A.K.A. Mama) had an M to F sex change and had a lesbian wedding. The maid of honor was my other biological mother (A.K.A. Mom) who is Mama's ex (she's straight) but still her best friend. :-)

Triple-momming is indeed cool. Also, good to see your ideas taking form. Sally forth!

This week, I finished editing a horror short story (4800 words) and am going to do the whole "send to magazine, repeat until success" thing. It might be fun to post updates here, but the whole process usually takes foreverrr.

I don't know what the rules are on having something already published that ur seeking to publish and such, but if you feel like you'd like to post it, I'd be really into that. Or just tell us how the slog goes...

Oh, interesting possible thought for discussion:
Kelly and I often collaborate on the creative part of an endeavour like the comic. He'll ask me about, "What would you do here?," though not often. Anyhow, we have found through hard experience that sometimes my ideas are really bad, and he'll go with them because bad self esteem has him doubting his better judgement, then pay the price. This is similar to when he was in art school and asked a teacher for advice about a painting. She kept saying the same stupid shit no matter how many times Kelly painted over that area of the painting. Turns out, she was just unfamiliar with the type of clouds Kelly was painting, so they looked wrong to her. The first draft looked fine, but somebody said something, so he had to change it.
So occasionally, advice can be a really bad thing. And since the people who it is worst for (low self esteemers) will be most vulnerable to the suggestions of people who are the worst qualified to give carefully considered opinions (high self esteemers like myself), it's incumbent on people like me to be mindful of not damaging the direction of good artists like my dude with thoughtless words.
I thought of this, because I don't know you well (DeeK), but I find it easy to imagine you soliciting advice then taking it seriously - when the people offering said advice may be less qualified to make those judgements than you are. Ergo, I'd like peeps to remind me to check myself before I wreck yourself. If these poorly constructed sentences make any sense...

@ Discussion from earlier - That's a good point. Criticism is best taken with a grain of salt. For example, during my undergrad poetry class, everyone had to write one poem. So of course I used a line that referred to the deep ocean as colder than ice in iced tea, or something. And a student said that it was impossible. But it's not, because this is the bottom of the ocean: not only does the saline water freeze at a cooler temperature than fresh water, it's extremely pressurized. Dude, don't eveeeen. Fortunately, I have extremely high self esteem (when it comes to most things - not social situations, but everything else). Like, almost too high. Edit: Seriously, though, I'm pretty full of myself. It's because I'm such a winner at life And I'm royalty. Pow Wow Princess counts as royalty. Edit edit: And now I want to share part of my favorite short story acceptance letter ever. Last edit, I promise ... Hi [NAME REDACTED]:
I have to admit, at first glance we groaned: "Oh, an artsy story about a woman buying a pillow." But you totally won us over ...

Well OK then. If you ask for critique, I'll give it without too much ado. If you are a good self esteemer, though, consider my experience with Kelly when you are giving advice to others. I had no idea how horrible stuff can be for low self esteemers until I really got to know one. Can you believe he thought he was stupid as a teenager, because Dunning-Kruger cases told him that all the time? Life is messed up. I should really stop telling personal stories about other peoples on the forum, but he's unlikely to ever read this area, haha.

Bullies seem to enjoy putting down talented people. It's like a power trip thing. So uncool. As for me, I learned to highlight positive parts of writing. If writers know when they're awesome, they can focus on the awesome. I did think of one instance when criticism is annoying, though: after it's too late to change anything, but someone says something nitpicky like, "I don't like the ending - you should have done this instead." Noooo. Y u do dis?

For realz. Personally, I haven't had my writing criticized much. Mostly just my penmanship, haha. I do know I've never taken criticism well. I've been a brat for a long time - hopefully less so now.
