To the east of Broadway, as one scales the hill, one enters a land of single family residential blocks, extending over the hill and down to Lake Washington. Some of it is considered Madrona. Some maps might call it Central Seattle. Whatever it is, it looks green from orbit because of all the lawns and trees, and survivors here live in fear of both monsters and raids from the creeps of Capitol Hill...

goo.gl/maps/K5gVDThe housing market exploded so fast over the years before the apocalypse that some surprisingly middle class people managed to hold onto properties as they increased in value tenfold. The houses out here ranged to the low millions as the zombies came, but that didn't mean they all looked like mansions.
In a dingy home's hole-in-the-hill garage, an intruder lurked...

The intruder woke with a start, for the hundredth time since the Zompocalypse began. Something was moving out there.
He squeezed his eyes and rubbed them. His limbs were still gummy from sleep paralysis. Finally, he pushed himself off the car seat and looked out the back window.
Such a narrow field of view. Nothing for it. He'd have to come out. Jacob- "Good morning, sunshine."

A young man walked down the sidewalks of the residential neighborhood, carrying all his worldly goods in a messenger bag. He'd decided to finally give up his not-so-comfortable home in a van back near Broadway. The area was fairly clear of zombies out here, and the gardens and trees were overgrown and lush like a Pacific Northwest jungle. Behind the sprawling growth were large houses, spread apart comfortably in a surprisingly suburban look so close to the city. He considered breaking into some of houses for food, but figured he'd better find a car he'd stay in when night fell. He walked along, checking car doors with no luck so far. How silly that all these cars, quickly becoming encrusted with dead leaves and debris, were locked forever. Would he have to hunt around inside houses looking for car keys? What a pain. Maybe he'd have to turn around... Takuji- "..."

Jacob opened the car door, holding the handle very firmly to reduce friction on the hinge. It worked - no squeak. He put one foot on the ground, then the other, and moved into the dark narrow space. The moss on the concrete practically formed a furry carpet. He scraped against it quietly, drawing out his umbrella.
At the corner of the opening, he quickly stuck his head out and looked around wildly. He saw a possible zombie with its back to him, and came out into the open. Looking around to see if there were any more zombies, he was satisfied. He gave a quick whistle to get the thing's attention. Jacob- "Yoo hoo."

Takuji- "くそああ!" The young man nearly fell over his feet turning around and backing up at the same time, his brain taking way too long to process the information.

Jacob- "Aww, you're just a kid. Wakarimasen. I think. Wakarimasen. Eigo des.., uh, ka?" He lowered the umbrella.

Takuji- "Oh-- ah-- hahaha, sorry. I thought-- oh. Hahaha..." The young man held his chest and laughed nervously, nearly out of breath from the start. Takuji- "Sorry, this is um, I don't know this place. Hello."
He spoke with a slight accent, but with a bit of trepidation, like he was considering his words a bit longer than a native speaker.

Jacob- "We're even, then, because I don't know this place either. Jacob. You are?"
Takuji- "Ah, I'm Takuji, sorry. I came from Capitol Hill, the school. Did you see any people here? It looks empty."
Jacob- "It's totally random. Ten houses, no one but a few zombies, ghosts, or rats. Two houses have squatters, and another has a family that somehow held out in the same house the whole time. Then another seventeen houses of nothing... I was on Capitol Hill before. Did you just leave?"
Takuji- "Yeah, it's weird there. Well, you know. I'm next to the grocery store, but it's pretty empty now. Just rotting fruits... I thought maybe I can find somewhere else, more food, but it's just houses huh?" Jacob gestured for Takuji to come with him up the stairs. They walked up the short hill, four foot tall grass brushing around them, rich with gnats and nuisance. At the top, they found comfortable places to sit on the house's porch.Jacob- "It's houses, yes, but that means all sorts of useful stuff. batteries for flashlights, lighter fluid, food that got passed over by raiders because it needed a little extra work to cook. Like rice."
Takuji- "Great! I got some good stuff at the Trader Joe's, but yeah, everyone took it all after a while. It's weird to just sit in the open like this, but it's kind of peaceful."
The kid took out a plastic bottle of 'sparkling pomegranate juice' that was filled with water.
Takuji- "Thanks, it's nice to talk to someone. Do you have people with you before?"
Jacob- "Only for a day. Broadway... You know. Hmm." He breathed in the early summer pollen and rubbed his neck.Jacob- "So you're alone and I'm alone. I've met some other guys out there, going alone. We're funny. Even the animals don't go alone."
Takuji- "Haha, that's true. I saw a gang of cats once, they all go together. I wonder if there are wild animals in the city now. There is a zoo in Seattle, right?"
Jacob- "I bet my brothers and sisters in the Liberation Front freed them. But that's across the water in Wallingford, I think... We have raccoons, skunks, possums, coyotes, rabbits, hawks, and all kind of stuff right here."
Takuji- "Oh yeah, that's cool. I was with some people for a little while, they keep trying to find animals to kill. Pretty stupid. Chasing around seagulls like little kids. Someone tried to shoot one and missed. I thought it was funny, but they got mad. I wonder if you can eat fish? I heard the ocean is polluted here."
He took a very small drink of water, like he was used to conserving it. It hadn't rained for a couple days. Jacob looked at him earnestly, as if trying to decide something.Jacob- "Yeah. Don't mess with those fish... Hey, you want to stick together for a while, until we can find some people who aren't bad to stay with?"
Takuji- "Hm-- okay! Maybe we can look through the houses together. I usually sleep in a car, don't ever see ghosts that way. I really hate ghosts."
Jacob- "I do the same thing! Haha. Isn't it weird though?"
Takuji- "Haha yeah! I thought I was really smart for figuring that out, you must be smart too. You know in Japan there are a lot of ghosts stories, 'Yūrei', they haunt a place where they died or where they lived. Maybe that's why the cars are safe, they stay in the buildings."
Jacob- "A lot of people die in car wrecks, but those cars aren't aren't the ones we see parked here... Well... Why don't we check out this building, Yakuji?"

A lone figure slunk out of the shadows and, after looking twice, crossed the street quickly, and then disappeared into an alley. Where they were going and why no one could be sure yet. A bicycle was parked on the opposite side, locked tightly.

Wolf worked his way towards the steeper slopes and windier roads closest to the lake. His face could not be seen behind the dark glass of the visor. The engine could be heard for quite a distance, though the tall trees and narrow streets distorted any sense for its actual location.
While the bike wasn't a racer, it could still handle the turns at irresponsibly high speeds. He didn't hesitate at the intersections and forks, just kept speeding forward towards some well-known destination.
He had to reduce his speed some when he came to the switchbacks, but not so much that anyone would have gotten a good look at him.
At Maiden Lane East, he skidded to a stop in front of a white painted gate. He parked the bike on the sidewalk behind a utility van. He used a key to let himself in and closed the gate behind him.[/i]

Wolf came out fifteen minutes later with two fairly large bundles, what appeared to be wads of t-shirts, though he handled them with greater care than would be expected for a load of laundry.
He gently placed one package in each of his cargo boxes, then went back and locked the gate. He push-turned the bike around, pointing it out from the dead end road. He climbed on, kicked it to life, and took off with much greater care than he had approached.
He made his way back towards the mansion in a circuitous route, at one point he caught the attention of a mob of about twenty zombies.
He slowed down to maintain their interest, leading them around like the Pied Piper of Hades. Eventually, he spotted a good spot and led them into an alley. He accelerated to the far end, dropped his kickstand, and jumped off to push a dumpster into the opening.
When he was sure they were all in the alley, beating uselessly against the wheel brakes he had engaged. It wouldn't hold them for more than five minutes, but that would be plenty of time for him to clear the neighborhood.
He returned to his bike and accelerated away smoothly. He arrived at the mansion ten minutes later.[/i]

Later that day ...[/i] A skinny man burdened with an overloaded hiking backpack and black guitar case jogged down the street. He tripped, and the case slipped from his hand. It clattered noisily on the pavement.[/i] "Shit!" Fearfully, he glanced behind his shoulder. The street was empty, the sun setting. He had to find shelter, before it found him.
What was that monster? It ripped out Chen's throat.
At the memory, he sniffled and hugged the guitar case. No use mourning. Chen was in nirvana, at peace.
The man smiled sadly and continued jogging, now looking for a place to hide ...

It was late evening. The mysterious young man, desperate for cover, ran from car to car along the street until he found an unlocked minivan. He climbed in, locked the doors, and hunched on the floor in the back seat.
Exhausted, he drank mucky-tasting water from a canteen.
By now, the sun had mostly set. A muted red-purple light from the west still persisted, but the east was dark and foreboding. He closed his eyes ...
... and woke a couple hours later. The man opened his eyes slowly. He could barely see during the day; at night, the world was a blur of shadows.
Was that a face-shaped sillhouette in the window?[/i]
