Ashley was just glad that Derek wasn't shouting. He didn't think he was bad, to be sure, but he could be obnoxious, especially now. He looked around in the gloom and found even more zombies hunching down in the darkness. He hoped they wouldn't be woken. He wondered, vaguely, if the El Corizone people had already broken in and raided the REI, he hoped not. It remained closed and dark, and waited for them. He walked by Patti's side, and touched her arm briefly, before walking up to the huge, incredibly dark doors, as they look beyond into the black hole-dark glass walls of the building.

With the building looming in front of them, Patti still found herself distracted by Derek's idiocy. It reminded her of the third and fourth grade in Killeen, Texas, where she frequently overheard other kids saying that the town's name stood for 'kill each and every nigger'. It was safe to assume Derek's stupidity was spoon fed to him as a kid, but it was still hard to ignore. Game face. Concentrate. She worried for a minute that they'd have to move through the wooded lot to get to the main entrance, but was relieved (sort of) when she saw someone had smashed out some of the windows by the climbing wall. She flashed her light towards the hole, then nodded to the guys. "Over here." The glass reflected entirely more light than she was comfortable with, as it made the interior hard to see in detail. She shone her light at the ground and moved up to the edge of the shattered glass portal. She peeked her head around the corner and slid her light across the mostly empty floor. Nothing yet...

The inside of the REI had a few zombies wandering about inside, but not many. The building remained entirely dark and cold. It had two visible floors, and one stairwell leading upwards to the second floor above.

Ben stepped up next to Patti and looked inside the hole. Ben- "If you put the light straight in their faces, they'd probably come out, and we could hit them out here. That should be safer than sneaking around in there."

Derek- "Smart! It will probably take a long time, though, and it's already getting way too dark out here. Eh.... What do you think, Ashley?"

"We should probably try to draw them out first, I like Ben's idea, and then they can't surprise me by hiding behind something." He grunts, and nods at Ben.

Patti nodded to Ben. "At least get them out to the open area in front of the climbing wall." She stepped inside, her framing hammer in one hand, the MagLite in the other. She shone the light directly at the zombies faces and moved towards the open area of floor. Once in the center, well away from the hole in the glass, she made a noise, not so loud as to be heard outside (hopefully) but enough that it would carry through the store. "Hey, zombies. Moving buffet over here." The nearest zombie turned with a glassy stare and hesitated momentarily before moving. The slow pace distracted Patti enough that she just barely noticed a faster moving zombie that was coming at her from the right. She heard Ash's warning at about the same time she spotted it herself. She jumped backward, giving her a full second and a half as the zombie righted itself and turned on her. It was still on it's heels when her hammer came across it's temple, sending it sprawling onto the floor, directly in the path of the first zombie, which stumbled and fell onto it's face with a wet thump. Patti made sure it didn't get up again with a single blow to the back of the skull.

Alex followed Patti into the building. He wielded a trusty red flashlight: battery powered, low-intensity beam, plastic shell. But he loved it anyway. In fact, Alex often used it to memorize playing cards and read books after sundown. Mother of God. REI was paradise. Well, paradise in ruins. It must have been glorious before the world more or less ended. He smiled wistfully and smacked a zombie in the head. The poor creature fell like a rock. "It's ... perfect." REI probably had track pants. So many pairs of track pants and jogging shoes. Athletic equipment, outdoorsy gear, high-protein foodstuff (he needed some sustenance, after sharing all his emergency snack food with those wild dogs) ... Derek- "Yeah, lotta good stuff here. Especially if we wanna go out to the woods, eventually."

"I could get more exercise clothes here." He echos Alex's sentiments concerning the clothes, or at least seemed to think much the same. He looks around quietly. "We could use this to get so many supplies." He remarks quietly. "I bet they have more dufflebags too, we should get some to share with others who do not have enough yet." He shifts uncomfortably, and then moves to the back of the store, eyes downcast. It was really splended...Looking up the wall, he found something writhing in the air that looked like a big... "SPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEERR!" It was not, in fact, a spider. It was a zombie on a rope, dangling haplessly from the ceiling, limbs splayed out. The rope had been (purposefully?) wrapped around a pillar and clipped into place to keep it there. Ashley immediately felt stupid. Very stupid. Most accurate thought he had concerning himself all day.

Ben- "Eh? Spider?" Ben didn't know why Ashley would be afraid of spiders, or how a spider in a temperate climate could possibly pose a serious danger. But he still started to make his way to Ashley to see what was up."What's going on over there?"

"HYAAA! What!?" He'd never heard Mr. Ashley sound so spooked. Alex joined Ben and Ash. "O ... oh. Christ. You scared me bad. I thought there was a monster in here. Something worse than dangle zombie." At the moment, everything seemed peaceful. He'd already filled his backpack with some supplies and was working on the second bag.

Derek- "Haha! Damn." Derek was moving about in quick steps, grunting and whacking zombies. One got an arm on his shoulder when Ashley surprised him, but he jerked back with a stagger, recovered, and put it down. His aluminum bat glinted and flashed in the feeble light.
When the crowd near him was put down, he took a few deep breaths and went back to join the others.

"It looked like some other kind of monster." He seemed both red and sheepish. The back door, which seems to be one of the rooms into the back of the store, jiggles a little bit. There's a shelf that has been pushed in front of it, probably by accident. The door says "Hellp!"

"It's a PERSON! Hang on." Alex threw himself against the wall near the closed door and held up his fist, made a couple quick incomprehensible SWAT hand signals, and then pushed the shelf out of the way.

Derek could tell these guys had a lot more emotionally invested in playing hero, so he just focused on keeping the rear guard position clear and let Alex do his thing.
