binarysunset Haha by the way, I wasn't sure what name you'd prefer on here. So! Do you have any hot ideas right off the bat? Your photographer could retiring and shy-- just working around the edges, an experienced professional, or even a wannabe artiste.

Haha, no worries! Tori is fine.
I was definitely thinking that she's a wannabe artist: the only reason she's working as a crime scene photographer is that she couldn't find any other work that would pay the bills. This is definitely her first murder job, in the past, she's mostly done, like, burglaries and the like. I'd really like to explore the sort of impact that sort of experience could have on a person.

Cool, maybe she could be friends with/the relative of one of the people involved in the investigation? Maybe the daughter of the police chief or something.
This will be an interesting scenario for her, I think, as the crimes are already long done. You could even review the previous crime scene photos, but by now they'd be cleaned and emptied. So she'll mostly be seeing ghosts of blood stains, subtle signs of violence rather than fresh corpses. However, who knows what they might find after the fact. Maybe a lonely burial site or another crime scene.
Knowing all that, how do you think she'd prepare herself? Is she going to just grin and bear any creepy stuff or do you think she'd try to use it as inspiration as well?

That would be neat, if she was the chief of police's daughter. It would certainly explain how she got the job!
I think she'd be the type of person to try and find the poetry in that sort of thing: like how can she shoot an old blood stain on, say, the wall of a dilapidated building and what does that say about the human condition? While she's certainly excited about the new challenge, I think she's very aware and very nervous that the killer could strike again at any time, and she would be responsible for documenting the grisly scene as it was found regardless of her own feelings and artistic sensibilities. And, of course, this is probably her first time really coming face-to-face with someone who's actually murdered people in cold blood, which is probably more than a little terrifying. I see her as very sheltered and, while she can find the artistic value in something like bones or decay, can she handle photographing a fresh or festering corpse or blood-soaked crime scene? That's something I'm not sure she's fully prepared to deal with. And, of course, there's the fact that her father is the chief of police, and she'd be a very easy target for anyone who has a vendetta against them.
To answer your questions directly: I'm not sure she's prepared at all! I think she's viewing it more as an artistic challenge than anything else. And she's certainly looking to get some inspiration, maybe even using some of her photos for an exhibition to try and give her artistic goals a bit of a boost.

Sounding great so far. This will be quite the day for her! So what is she like outside of work? Did she go to art school, or try to start a different artistic career? Where does she live, and does she live with anyone else?

I think outside of work, she's bubbly and sweet and a surprisingly deep thinker. She definitely went to art school for photography. I think it's been her "thing" for a while. I could see her living in a nicer part of Detroit (if such a thing exists) or perhaps a little apartment in the suburbs with her best friend from college.

There's a sort of hipster area downtown you were able to squeak into. A lot of your school friends have moved off to Chicago and keep trying to needle you into joining them. Your family lives just outside of town, your dad's commute was always hellish. Speaking of your relationships... maybe we can work on her Relations!
I'd like you to pick one neutral (0), one meaningful (+1), and one vital relationship (+2). They can be colleagues, friends, family or anything else. They don't have to be the people you've mentioned so far.
Here's the guide from the book:
Neutral (0): Applies to most relations. Acquaintances, friends, coworkers, and others you don’t have much in common with.
Meaningful (1): Close friends, family members, romantic interests, beloved pets, personal mentor, guru.
Vital (2): Passionate lovers, your own children, the only friend you have left, your ‘true love,’ an obsession, your soulmate.
They also don't have to share the same level of relationship with you-- aka someone thinks you're better friends than you really are, and vice versa.

Oh yeah, could you also please give me a name for your character, and a photo for what you imagine she looks like?

Lol, I realised I forgot to give her a name. Her name is Heather Lancaster.
Okay, for relationships:
+0 would probably be most of her coworkers. Most people definitely see her as dead weight and think she only got the job because of her father. They’re not entirely wrong.
+1 is her father, Arthur. I don’t think they got along that well while she was growing up, but they have a much better relationship now that they don’t have to live together. They probably have dinner together at least once a month, and they’re pretty close. Same with her mother, Molly, but I don’t think they as close as Heather is with her dad. Her roommate is also a +1. They’ve known each other since they were in college and share a lot of interests.
+2 is her girlfriend, Nessa. They’ve been dating since her freshman year of University and Nessa knows her better than anyone else. The only reason they aren’t living together is because she was able to get a job as a tattooer’s apprentice at a world class shop in Chicago. They don’t see each other in person very often due to the distance, but they definitely text and video chat constantly.
Photo incoming. I can’t figure out how to embed them on mobile, so I’ll do that once I’m on a real computer lol

Sounding great! So do you think there's a time we could schedule to do some faster posting? Maybe just an hour or two would be good. Either that, or I could just ask a zillion questions per post. I'd like if we could get your character finished up so we can start playing some in-game stuff soon. If you're too busy, that's fine, but it might mean your character will show up late to the scene. We're starting to get a clearer picture of her as a person. I have two questions for you that are a bit involved. How would you describe her strengths and weaknesses as a person? Like is she hard working but scatterbrained, or creative but lazy? What is she the best, and absolute worst at? And what is her 'dark secret?' AKA, something she's never told even her girlfriend and hopes no one would ever find out. You can PM me or email me if you'd like it to be secret.

And I return with a photo! I think one of her biggest issues is that she's a perfectionist. If she doesn't think something's good enough, it's not going to see the light of day and she won't continue to work on something she isn't utterly in love with. Because of this, her computer is definitely littered with all sorts of half-finished projects that she refuses to acknowledge long enough to delete. Art school has probably helped fix this somewhat, but I'm pretty sure most of her crime scene photos would never see the light of day if that wasn't legally withholding evidence. And, while she has a bubbly personality, it's mostly hiding up the fact that she's so anxious about what other people think of her. Like, "if I'm sweet enough and nice enough, no one will notice how much of an idiot I am and that I probably don't deserve this job or pretty much anything else that's been handed to me". She's very aware that she's been handed most of the things she has, and it's given her a mad case of imposter syndrome. I think her "dark secret" is that she used to buy drugs for her best friend who was struggling with a heroin addiction in high school. He started to go broke and she saw the withdrawal symptoms ruining his life and all of his school prospects. Instead, he nearly died of an overdose and has been in rehab ever since without ever graduating. She feels responsible for feeding his addiction and nearly killing him, but it was also the only thing she could think to do at sixteen. While she visits him from time to time, no one except the two of them and his dealer know that she was the one buying for him with her father's money. Obviously, it's not something she talks to people about and I think she's put it behind her, but I'm also sure there are stories in the drug world about how "the chief's kid" used to buy heroin.

Hey, great work! Thanks for being so descriptive. Saturday will be great. I have some chores to do, so do you think you'll be on at a particular time? Now, the next two parts of character creation are the more game-y parts. When we get to filling out the character sheet, there are a lot of 'description' sections, where you'll explain what the stats/advantages etc mean for the character & how they manifest. For the moment, we'll do the fiddly numbers and such. This rules page is not finalized, but this section on attributes should be good: horrorboys.proboards.com/post/88707/thread You can read a little about what the stats mean but they're pretty simple. Please let me know if you need any help with this part. For these passive stats, you'll assign o, +1, and +2. Reflex Willpower Fortitude And for these active stats, you'll assign -2, -1, +0, +1, +1, +2, and +3 Perception Intuition Reason Charisma Soul Violence Coolness You can see examples here: horrorboys.proboards.com/thread/1016/character-profiles (But don't post there yet.)

No problem! I just got back home from work and I wanted to get some creative juices flowing lol.
I'll definitely be available around 2 PM EDT, so that would be a good time to have an extended chat.
Fortitude: +0 Willpower: +1 Reflexes: +1
Reason: -1 Intuition: +0 Perception: +3 Coolness: +1 Violence: -2 Charisma: +2 Soul: +0
I've also taken a gander at the advantages and disadvantages, so I'll put the ones I like here as well. I tried to choose things that would work with her character. Nothing's final, of course, but I just thought I'd give you what I thought might work with what we've already discussed:
Disadvantages (I picked two, but I could get rid of one): Poor judge of character Trusting
Advantages: Eye for detail Forbidden inspiration (like, maybe when she's looking at her photos on her laptop, she'll see something spooky that she didn't catch in the moment?) Celebrity (she's the police chief's daughter after all)

Ooh nice choices, let me think about these... Normally I'd say no to any soul based advantages if you don't have over 0 in soul, but... do you want to nudge her more towards future supernatural/spookiness, or keep her more grounded? In this game all our characters start as 'sleepers' -- aka people not awakened to the supernatural. Once they've had a life-changing experience, they may find themselves changing in other ways... So she may become more attuned even within the short time we play. Even characters that disbelieve in the supernatural completely will have some eerie experiences. As for the others, a lot of these will mostly be flavor. Like the two disadvantages are really similar, just slightly different connotations. I'd say either/or on them, just thinking about what suits your vision for the character. Oh! and if you have any ideas for tweaks/whole new ones, they're very easy to invent. Ah-- I had an idea. How does she feel about the supernatural? Does she have any experiences with it, or ideas about it? Maybe you could involve her art. Might be a bit cliche to have the whole Fatal Frame ghost camera, but could be something to consider.
