Dr. Victor blinked at the noises above him heading for the sixth floor, catching glimpses of new people. He hurried into the clinic, stopping in the restroom to quickly adjust himself and compose his face to the best of his abilities. Once he was pleased with the reflection, he stepped into the clinic area, tugging at a pair of rubber gloves from the box on the old bar space. Once he saw them, he remembered exactly who they were, nodding slowly. He was a military man. Colonel, yes, who took his family out of the building they had stayed in with Anna.
Dr.Bebe-
"Welcome back. It's the man at last. "
"Oh, hello all. I'm Dr. Victor. I'll be taking care of you along with Dr. Melange here and Columbo. I'm glad to see you all again. Sorry to keep you waiting, but it's been a hectic couple of nights for us here as undoubtedly you as well. I'll try and make this as brief as possible." He waited for the introductions to begin and then moved to the one who appeared most critical.
The good doctor moved to the girl's side, glancing down at her eyes with a wide gaze. He checked her pupils and made sure they weren't dilated or transfixed. Her pupils seemed slow to respond to light changes but did work. Pretty much everything about her was crappy in one way or another.
"You're Kaya, correct? Hmm... oh, yes. Well, I think we're going to have to have a few quick conversations okay? Do you have any allergies that you're aware of to medications or foods?"
Kaya-
"Yes... I have a headache. OK. Mm... I'm allergic to penicillin and a lot of cheese, and bees, and some chemicals in perfumes and stuff..."
"Okay, when was the last time you ate or drank something, dear?"
Kaya-
"We had ... we drank something... been living off pieces of candy bars... Dr. Bebe was about to give me that..." She pointed to the IV gear nearby.
"Do you have any medical history or complications you can think of? You're looking awfully thin there, sweetie. Don't worry, we'll get you fixed and back up in no time."
Kaya-
"I was sick before it happened, still sick... Not sure what. I'm just tired and sick a lot, sometimes fever. I had meningitis a few years ago."
Wil-
"She had some blood work and other tests being done, but we didn't get the results in time."
Dr. Victor started procedures for exhaustion and dehydration, unless any new and interesting knowledge broached the surface.
"Columbo, could you go and get us one of those power bars that have been bouncing around? Preferably one with nuts. Dr. Melange, I'll need help setting this IV for the saline."
Columbo-
"Why not?"
Dr. Bebe-
"Ha, I was hoping you'd help... It's been a while for me."
"Don't worry Kaya, it's just since you're rather thirsty, your veins which need the fluid will try and drink it up too fast, causing the vein to collapse down. It happens to everyone, so don't worry. Veins are pretty strong and repair themselves quickly."
Kaya-
"Thank you doctors, both of you... I'm glad to be alive and.. see other people." She was weirdly blank as she spoke, honest but not an expressive person - especially when exhausted.
Wil-
"Seriously, anything in the world we can do for you, we will."
Once Kaya was settled, Dr. Victor turned to Colonel Teddy, nodding at the man.
"Oh, thank you for your assistance that night. I... if I came off as rude or inconsiderate, I apologize sincerely. If you folks want to wait here that is fine, but we don't have much to offer on the first floor. Uhm, Davin, could you help the Colonel and his son upstairs for something to eat?"
Col. Teddy-
"Well, about time to meet someone with a modicum of respect. Good evening, sir, and well met."
Davin-
"Sure, doctor."
Wil-
"If I go upstairs, it's only long enough to get something for Kaya. Is there any other food you have up there that would be good for her?"
Dr. Bebe-
"Go get some food for yourself, Wil. As for Kaya, we'll come up with something for her and have it made special order, in a little while. OK?"
"Thanks, Dr. Melange. That was a great job you did on the IV. I doubt anyone else could have managed that, but maybe we could use a couple extra hands. If things escalate with the population, we'll be able to see more patients if there are more able people, like Columbo, with the skills and knowledge to assist us. There were others, all clean bill of health and all that, yes?"
Dr. Bebe-
"You're welcome. Train more medical staff? More of a challenge than I'd hoped to face while doing this research, but may be necessary... Yes, the art students were young and strong before their unfortunate travail. They'll be fine if they follow my instructions. We cleaned them up and sent them upstairs."
...and so it went... Kaya would certainly be a challenge. If her condition was contagious, Wil would have developed it by now. But maybe it would only take root on those with compromised immune systems. Either way, at least a partial quarantine was obviously necessary in the short term. And it was a good thing Sharma seemed to be recovering fast, with this exposure an issue. Better tell Wil not to kiss baby Jaylyn.
