Toby- "Now you're gonna miss the scene. Are you OK?"
Marcus- "Don't want what? You came for something. Maybe I should show you a trick."
Arianne- "Yeah, buddy. Are you feeling alright?" The scenes had changed. He was with Marcus looking out onto a pier. He was looking at Toby and Arianne in the moonlight, sitting on wood pilings. He tried to go to them. "Watch out! Nooo." To Marcus: "I can't even wit you."

Toby- "Where... Where are you? It's cold..." His voice trailed off and he disappeared from human Eli's sight - or rather human Eli ceased to be. The last thing he saw was Toby and Arianne turning away, distracted.Marcus- "HAHAHAHAHA! You'll never be illuminated with that attitude. Magic is a trick. Do you want me to show you the trick?" Down the dock he could see two people looking back toward him and Marcus, wreathed in flames, subtle at this distance. Marcus started to walk toward them. Could he move? Could he get between Marcus and his precious peoples?

He could move but it felt dream-like. Nothing was quite real. Nonetheless, he had enough control to do something. As he saw Marcus walking down the pier toward the people, what did he do? Attack! Flurry of blows on Marcus.

Marcus didn't do much, just disintegrated beneath his blows. Eli was alone on the pier, the two people not far away, quiet, still. What then? He went right up to them, to see, peer into the fires to see if it was really them.

It was indeed Toby and Arianne, but as they were about to speak, tentacles wrapped around their throats. Monster form Marcus loomed behind them, his voice like a squall of wind.Marcus- "I can't show you the trick. If you want to be illuminated, you must do it yourself." The thing glanced to Eli's hand. He was holding a knife. It felt more real than anything or anyone in this vision. Feeling some types of ways. To Marcus: "You suck and stuff."

Marcus- "Puah. I'm not even real. Only your choice is." Indeed, the knife felt more real than him, more real than Toby and Arianne.
This was it then, the sacrifice to gain the magic. He stepped closer, wondering what was real and what consequences of this vision could be.

The phantom threatened to become more real as he approached. He could easily imagine the terror and the blood. Was it his imagination that made them real? Could he just focus on the knife and be done with this, turn his mind away from visions of pain and death? Tearfaced, he stabs his homies to death.

Blood and crying and grody death noises. Arianna's turn. For what it was worth, it didn't feel real. This isn't real, this isn't real. Or maybe it is. Focus on the loss, so it feels real enough to be paying the cost?

The knife was heavier than anything in this world. It sunk into the pier like a lead weight into gelatin, causing everything to slide down the funnel into nothingness - Toby and Arianne, their blood, the ocean, Marcus... Somehow the most acute loss he felt was the knife, knowing it was going away from him forever.
He woke looking down at his hands. Yes, he had no knife. That knife, it was important. Like, a symbol of the ultimate truth. This illumination just opened his eyes to how much he didn't know.
It also left him feeling weirdly sad and empty. He really didn't know why, couldn't clearly remember the vision. He was just back to his usual weird, lonely life. His closest friends had always been mentor figures, no one his own age. Always a bit of a man apart. Why did it feel like something had changed? Was awakening something that just automatically made you sad? Alain was waiting with his eyes closed, a column of smoke behind him.
((Eli no longer remembers ever having been friends with Toby & Arianne. If he sees something of them like a Social Link ID or whatever, he'll assume they were a much more casual acquaintance and think nothing of it.)) Alain- "It is done. What do you see?" Something a little odd. He could recognize the intent behind anything artificial around him - the gazebo, the ritual components, the clothing he piled nearby. The most powerful intent was invested in the melted candles, in the marks Alain had made. Alain himself seemed filled with a powerful will he couldn't even understand. I can see magic, but I feel this loss, like my world has been diminished.

Alain- "A divestment. You'll feel better in time, not that there won't be plenty of opportunities for pain in your future. Nonetheless, the good news: You did it! You are a magician, Eli, whatever else happens." I guess I'll come to appreciate this more.

((see edits above))
Alain- "The best part is that unlike most, you have forever to explore that power. What do you say?" ((last post for night?)) Can't wait to get started, my dude.
