In this thread we'll talk about any art or media with a horror theme. What's your favorite horror fare? Discuss as you like.

OK I hafta hafta recommend this manga I've been reading recently. It's on-going, and it is goooood. Starts out pretty slow, but once it gets going, man. "I am a Hero" -- read online here: mangafox.me/manga/i_am_a_hero/It's a zombie story, and it starts out slow like I said, but once the soup goes down, these are seriously the best zombies I've ever seen in comics. The action scenes are AMAZING and it's a rare comic that gets better volume by volume. (The last volume knocked my freakin' socks off, it has probably the best action sequence in comics history, in my opinion.) Read it at least for the zombie babies.

Here's another I'm not quite as thrilled about, but has some pretty solid gore scenes. The art style is.. well, kinda unappealing and the whole gothic lolita thing... : / There's also some lame sexism (girl getting her breasts exposed for no reason, etc.) Well with that damning introduction-- it's still pretty good. It's called Ibitsu - www.mangareader.net/ibitsu/1The pacing in this comic is pretty great, and again, the action and gore is surprisingly good. I was surprised to actually be creeped out by our villainess, despite her lame character design. Worth checking out, I think.

I second the recommend for "I am a Hero."
That action scene is very cinematic. In part it's that he uses photo reference to give the environments a camera-eye feel, but he does that one better. Unlike a movie screen, the proportion and size of a comic panel can change to suit the needs of the action.
And zombies get kersploded.

I recommend if you can grab it in your country, Lake Mungo. It's freaky and done in a way that makes it feel oh so real. I have been to where it was shot, pretty scary town for all the wrong reasons hahaha. www.imdb.com/title/tt0816556/

this isn't my "favorite" per se, but i stumbled upon it recently and wanted to share the creepiness, and lo and behold this is the perfect place to do so (previously i was wondering how i could deftly insert the link into my regular Kingfisher comments). unomoralez.com/img.html?cid=2&offset=8

Ahaha I LOVE Uno Moralez too, Daniel! I gotta put him on the links page when I update that thing. Thanks for the tip too, Indea, I'll have to take a look at that. I love slow, brooding horror movies. <3

Very useful thread! I'm going to have to check most of these out, 'cause I didn't know of them! I um, might come up with more later, but for now, I'll recommend books! Caitlin Kiernan's books are pretty awesome. I particularly found Threshold really creepy, and rather enjoyed Low Red Moon and Daughter of Hounds. Oh and The Red Tree and Alabaster. Aside from that! Well, I imagine Uzumaki, Tomie, and Gyo - and well, Junji Ito's works in general - probably go without saying. Sadly cannot provide any links for them at the moment, 'though. Red Museum is also a rather nifty site, if a bit gory. There are a few short comics, as well as rather a lot of art. (I feel inclined to plug, because the artist is a friend, and his works seem relevant to this topic)!

kilnarak OMG Junji Ito is of course, my biggest comic influence! I've also really loved Ramiro's work, how cool that he's your friend! I'm mad jelly. I'll have to check out these books, I hate to say I'm a bit short on good horror fiction these days. (Btw fixed your link)

Oh yeah! This is only sorta horror, but I think you guys would love it. Rebuild 2-- one of my favorite online games. It's a zombie game, but it's more of a strategy style. You have to reclaim the city from zombies by managing resources, getting cool weapons and ending the subjugation of women. (Aw yea.) www.kongregate.com/games/sarahnorthway/rebuild-2I love the random freaks you get in this game-- in my and Christopher's zombie RPG I named my character after one: 'Snake Cox.'

Could use some more horror games! Especially freeonline ones! Most of what I can recommend are like. I donno, probably already sort of popular ones. Like Amnesia. Amnesia was really creepy. Also um. The mod White Night for Amnesia was a pretty good one - I don't actually feel it was as scary as the base game, but it's still has it's creepy moments. The Penumbra series is also pretty good. Lone Survivor seems like an interesting game - I haven't actually played too far. The monsters all look like things out of Silent Hill. And then, probably more relevant to sexy-vampires (or uh, not so sexy vampires)... Lately I've been playing VtM: Bloodlines which is entertaining. And well, the Legacy of Kain series (is just a wiki-link, because... hard to find just one link that talks about all of the games). They were actually some of my favorite depictions of vampires, if... mostly because they're all terrible-hideous things. I uh. Well, I don't really find either of these that scary, but vampires! ... I could probably turn this into a wall of text, but! I will spare you lovely forum-goers. Anyhow, moar recs pls? I've been like, binge-reading I am a Hero for the past couple days. >>

Sadly I'm pretty out of the loop on what's happening in horror anythings. But every once in a while a person misses out on something relevant to their interests and great, so it can sometimes be useful to list the obvious: Good horror-themed music, movies, comics, video games, whatever.
Music: The Misfits, Bauhaus, Silent Hill soundtracks (the games, not the movie), Gravediggaz, the album Songs in the Key of X (various artists), Christian Death, uh... Kelly would know a thousand more.
Movies: Jacob's Ladder (number one for all time), The Shining (still second place), John Carpenter's The Thing (forget the original, I say), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original), Night of the Living Dead (actually the color remake by Tom Savini was very nice too), old Cronenberg like Videodrome, The Poltergeist movies, American Werewolf in London, Evil Dead (the first movie will shock you by being actually scary, if you've never seen it), The Exorcist (the 3rd movie is actually very respected too), Hellraiser 1 & 2 (more demented than scary but I LOVE those), mm... I'm sure someone can add to that.
If you want horror movies and haven't watched David Lynch because he's too weird, you're shooting yourself in the foot. There are strong horror elements in most of his movies, especially: Eraserhead, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and even Inland Empire.
And the best horror director still making good movies (though at maddeningly long intervals): Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Don't miss Cure or Retribution (Sakebi).
For Japanese stuff, I thought the original Grudge was practically experimental film in the way it didn't bother to have a story, the first time I saw it. It was off-putting. But looking past that, it was scary and influenced my ideas a lot.
Comics: I can't speak to this one. I'm no expert. Maruo is surprisingly artistic for someone to crawl out of the guro underground, but art isn't necessarily scary. On an unrelated note, if you can find his Gichi-gichi Kid, that shit is hi-larious. Junji Ito, of course, is the best. And IDW comics are over-rated hack writing often supported by lazy slapdash art by people like Templesmith. Ugh.
Video games: Everyone knows about Silent Hill. But for legendary horror games, you might not know about Yume Nikki. If you DL that and play it, you may find yourself thinking "What's the point here?" and quit. Kelly highly recommends it, so think twice before giving up on it. Kelly is an expert. :-)

Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorites too. It's so disturbing. And... a lot of the Hellraiser stuff. The most recent few I haven't been that keen on, but I liked the older ones.
Hmm. Movies you didn't mention... Well, I watch a lot of asian horror. A Tale of Two Sisters is an awesome ghost story. Lots of suspense, light on the blood and guts, but still really creepy. Didn't like the American remake as much. I also liked Kairo/Pulse, but it's... pretty slow really. I thought it was interesting to think about, 'though. It's also sort of a ghost story? And focuses on how isolated people are becoming due to technology. I donno, I liked it anyway. And The Host/Gwoemul is another one of my favorites. It's not really scary, but it's an amusing monster movie. I liked how the creature looked. Blah, I need to look through my dvds, I know I have a bunch more than just those. ><
I'm not sure if it's really horror, but one of my favorite artists is Kazuma Kaneko. He did most of the demon/monster designs for the Shin Megami Tensei series of games - used to do the character designs as well, although they switched artists for the more recent games. Oh, but that reminds me. Digital Devil Saga was an awesome game - post-apocalyptic cannibal-demons. Also most of the characters are likeable, and the story is interesting. Not really "survival horror" but the plot does have some horrific elements.
Christopher or Kelly or someone? D'you know where I might be able to download Yume Nikki? I wanna check it out. >> Although all of the links I'm coming up with are dead. ><
