Babette found her trip to the garage uneventful...
Chloë waited a moment for the sound of Babette's footfalls to fade.
She twisted in her seat like an impatient child.
His mind tried to focus on the moment more than it had in days, but he still couldn't make sense of it.
She took a deep, unnecessary breath, and pulled out her phone, poking around on it a moment with shiny eyes.
She sat on his bed, and held out her phone, scrolling down for him. It took a moment to recognize what was happening in a little looping video. A weakly smiling face in a poorly lit room, forehead wrapped in gauze. A short message was written beneath:
She nodded, chewing her lips.
Her edge-of-tears face slowly changed to one of sheer confusion.
It took a moment but she nodded and wiped her eyes with a lacy handkerchief, smearing mascara all over.
She got her face under control, and was able to even out her shaky voice.
She gave him an extremely weak pat on his good shoulder, before putting her hat back on, waving goodbye and closing the door behind her.
Vitus-
"..."
Then the hotel suite was quiet but for a lone dead guy...
Chloë waited a moment for the sound of Babette's footfalls to fade.
Chloë-
"I'm sorry, I don't want to bug you,
I just need to tell you something. "
Vitus-
"Um, I don't understand... I guess just tell me."
Chloë-
Well, I don't think anyone was as good of friends with Jack
as you and me..."
Vitus-
"Yeah, that's safe to say. Eli and Tristan
would be a distant second."
Chloë-
"Is that how come you wanted that book?
If you don't mind my asking..."
Vitus-
"Yeah, that's the reason. Like I said, I want to get that wisdom on the subject."
Chloë-
"Do you think I should read it?"
Vitus-
"Err, it's kind of dense. I wouldn't recommend it to the ... casual reader."
Chloë-
"Oh yeah, I guess I'm pretty casual.
Um, this might be a really stupid question,
but we-- I mean, when you're like us,
do we not do funerals?"
Vitus-
"That's a reasonable question.
Most of the time people don't bother.
Maybe we should do something.
I don't know if I can right now..."
Chloë-
"Do you um... I feel like I-- I should tell you something,
but I'm not sure. I don't want to upset you but I think...
you'll be glad? I don't know..."
She twisted in her seat like an impatient child.
Chloë-
"Oh Vitus... are we friends? I know we don't know each other well but..."
His mind tried to focus on the moment more than it had in days, but he still couldn't make sense of it.
Vitus-
"I don't understand what... At any rate, I am fond of you, truly..."
Vitus-
"...But what is this all about, really?"
Chloë-
"I... want to tell you something but I'm kind of not supposed to-- but-- augh, I just can't-- should I? Should I tell you? I like you a lot and I... ughh... I don't know!"
Vitus-
"whut... um... er..."
Chloë-
"Ummmm can I tell you something super secret? I don't-- someone wanted to tell you something but-- they... weren't sure. I think they should though. I think it's something you would like a lot but you can't tell anybody. Okay?"
Vitus-
"Oh. Oh. Well, now I'm confused again. If you feel saying this - whatever it is - would be a good thing, it's hard to imagine how it could be bad. Er, why not?"
She took a deep, unnecessary breath, and pulled out her phone, poking around on it a moment with shiny eyes.
Vitus-
"..."
Chloë-
"I got this Blip the other night... It's real."
She sat on his bed, and held out her phone, scrolling down for him. It took a moment to recognize what was happening in a little looping video. A weakly smiling face in a poorly lit room, forehead wrapped in gauze. A short message was written beneath:
Hi, I'm sorry if I made you feel bad. Just came to my senses. Still growing back my brain. Love you.
Vitus-

Vitus-

Vitus-
"Wow. That's... Well."
He looked around furtively. "Well, that's tremendous." He picked up his phone and typed a text without sending it.
555-362-1672: Ok this does have to be a secret. Good for him. That's really great.
She nodded, chewing her lips.
Chloë-
"I didn't tell anybody..."
Chloë-
"..."
He took both of her hands with his one good hand.
Vitus-
"That's a real cute er... video of a... your old dog, it is. Yes?"
Her edge-of-tears face slowly changed to one of sheer confusion.
He let go to operate his cellphone and typed out...
Chloë-
"Huh?"
Just in case anyone with sharp ears is around, let's say that's a cute picture of your dog.
It took a moment but she nodded and wiped her eyes with a lacy handkerchief, smearing mascara all over.
He put a hand on her shoulder
Chloë-
"Thanks. -- yeah... you're right. He's a-- a-- very cute dog."
Vitus-
"It's good, that really did cheer me up.
I just... I think I should get back to my reflections.
I'll see you again soon."
She got her face under control, and was able to even out her shaky voice.
Chloë-
"I'm glad... I hope um, I hope you can read that other book soon?
I'll bring it, maybe next time it will be more fun?"
Vitus-
"Maybe. Maybe...
Enjoy the rest of your night,
be with your friends."
She gave him an extremely weak pat on his good shoulder, before putting her hat back on, waving goodbye and closing the door behind her.
Vitus-
