ELSEWHERE,
Helen had just gotten the haps about danger at El Estado Sombreta, and called Demetri.
Helen-
"Demetri? Hello?"
Demetri-
"Is this about that Theodore?"
Helen-
"Hi Demy, well, it could be. I don't want to scare anyone for no reason,
but I think we should go check on the Sombreta estate. One of the kids
had a vision and now Vitus isn't answering his phone."
Demetri-
"I wouldn't have-- The Sombreta estate? I should go. Thank you." *click*
Helen fussed for a little bit before calling Wilhelm to accompany her to the estate.
Best to hope that it was nothing, but she was getting a terrible feeling...
Meanwhile, Demetri sped to the estate like a bat out of hell.
Demetri-
"Jack!"
He turned back into a bat and disappeared into the crumbling tower of flames.
Flying all through the building - as much as possible given the fire - he couldn't
find any survivors at all. Giving up, he got outside, and a movement on the
lawn caught his eye.
He resumed Demy form as he flew down from the building. There he didn't have
to take more than two steps before he saw a burnt-up horror movie monster with
only three limbs crawling across the lawn toward him, insensate with bloodlust.
Vitus-
"Gurrrrgg... Gurrg!"
Demetri-
"I knew you'd be too weak to protect him, you fool!"
The creature was unthinking, just scrabbling toward him as quickly as it could
with its broken body. It trailed scraps of burned cloth and skin as it reached out
its sole arm and swiped at the air. Demetri kicked the arm aside easily.
Vitus-
"Gggggg! Glk!"
Demetri-
"I suppose you'll make a mess of the firemen
should I leave you in this deserved state."
He swiped open a wrist and hurriedly put it to the thing's mouth.
The thing gulped wildly, squeezing Demetri's wrist with its ashy hand.
Vitus-
"glub glub"
Vitus-
"..."
He let go and fell away. Demetri scorned him.
Demetri-
"Vitus. If your tongue is not charcoal,
could you enlighten me as to what happened
here? What has become of your family?"
Vitus-
"Oh, I'm not sure... You should call someone."
He seemed calm, but very zonked out. Nearby a pale arm lay in the manicured grass.
The coat was much less burned than the one on Vitus, the pale hand unmarred but for
a few smears of coagulating blood. Its fingers were curled into a relaxed position like
it belonged to someone in a peaceful slumber. Shards of bone jutted out of the cloth like
splintered wood, and a bloody handprint seemed to squeeze the crook of the elbow.
Demetri-
"Charming. I'll take this bit of evidence. And..."
Demetri-
"Please answer, Helen."
Helen-
"We're on our way! Oh no, what's that sound?"
Demetri-
"Roaring flames I'm afraid. You may have to finesse some
firemen on arrival. I shall need help with Vitus - he's in a
wretched state. As to anyone else..."
Helen-
"Oh no!! Oh, oh no. I see the smoke! Wilhelm's with me--"
Wilhelm-
"Hello!"
Helen-
"Hold on, I'll be right there!" Demetri-
"Very well."
He let the phone call end and turned to face a new annoyance.
Fire Marshall-
"You there! What the hel--" Demetri-
"No concern of yours. Move
along or take a nap..."
Demetri dragged the Vitus situation further toward the trees, away from the building.
Rushing humans tromped through the area, oblivious to the trail of vampire crusties.
An owl swooped down and transformed.
Helen-
"Oh my gosh! Look at-- What Demetri-
happened?! Is he... Oh V, honey..." "He'll be fine. Take care of him,
so I can focus on what needs
to happen next."
Vitus-
"make-s... sense... helln."
Helen-
"Sure Demy, just let me know what I can
do to help. Wilhelm is coming around
with the car... I just can't... *quiet sob*"
She knelt by Vitus and spoke softly.
Helen-
"Oh honey... Can you
think straight? What Vitus-
happened to you?" "Theodore... killed Jack with...
bombs. Sombreta dead. Don't
know how. Iron maiden?"
Demetri-
"I couldn't find anyone else inside.
Damn it! Jack... Damn it..."
Helen-
"That's-- oh no, no... we Vitus-
have to warn everyone!" "over here."
Fire Marshall- Demetri-
"Hey there! You--" "Everyone here is healthy and
does not require assistance. Leave."
Demetri-
"I'll be glad when Wilhelm gets here so you
two can shadow this over and I can get moving."
Wilhelm came jogging up like some kind of loser who still used his feet.
Wilhelm-
"Oh dear."
Helen-
"Sweetie, let's get him in the car?"
Wilhelm-
"Yes, naturally..."
Demetri-
"Do disguise your progress, and Wilhelm?"
Wilhelm picked up the sad bundle that was once a man not much smaller than himself.
Wilhelm-
"I'll have to stop by the cleaners-- yes, Demetri?"
Demetri-
"Why isn't Santi here? No offense,
but he'd be much more useful here."
Wilhelm-
"..."
Helen-
"Oh I asked Wil to come with me, you
know, he's a big strong guy and all..."
Wilhelm-
"Santi can't exactly drive either, but duly noted."
He hefted dead Vitus over his shoulder and made haste to his car.
Helen-
"Should I start calling, or just
worry about the humans?"
Demetri-
"Just do whatever it takes to get Vitus
in talking condition. We'll need as much
information as we can get. Thank you."
Helen diverted the attention of some potential looky-loos with an illusory backdraft
of flame, then met Wilhelm in the car with tattered old Vitus. He related the story
as best he could in his sorry state, and got a few more slurps of blood from willing
donors. Wilhelm was very quiet...
The estate crumbled in flames, leaving only sad ghosts to roam the area, undisturbed.

Eli had noticed something earlier out of the corner of his eye, but he'd been too focused on Vitus to pay it much mind. A wisp of smoke drew his gaze that way.
