Trevor's new phone was working and he used it to call Florence for a ride back to the aquarium.
Courtney was set to go, but weaseled her way out of it. By the time they reached the Shadow Room
for the Dust Covers show, the following people were in the group:
The crowd was entirely too human.
Vitus took advantage of the large group of young vampires keeping
each other's interest to get Jason outside for a talk.
Jason-
"Don't worry about me, alright? I'm serious about
this - I don't want someone watching over me."
Jason-
"At this point, I don't think I can avoid the incident back with Gaston-Louis
from happening again. But, it wasn't Gaston-Louis's fault that I killed a man.
It was because I had no control, and now, I'm much more prepared for the
worst. And I also do believe concern is justified but, I'd rather look out for
myself that have someone else do it for me. If I'm going to go down this road,
I NEED to do it alone."
Jason-
"I'm sorry- its just that I've had a lot on my mind. If were going to finish
this conversation we might need to go somewhere else more private.
I don't exactly want people knowing that I killed someone.."
Vitus glanced around at the mostly empty street. The amber lamps formed a sea
of sickly urine-colored light around them, in which they could see that the few
fireballs out this late were very much minding their own urine-colored business.
Jason-
"Well, it happened when Gaston-Louis and I were searching for someone
to feed off of. As we were looking around for someone, I found a group of
men huddled in a group in an alleyway and Gaston thought that it would
be best if I handled this one- so, I approached them. So, I began talking
with them and we began to argue..I guess one of the men thought that I
was egging him on to shot me so, he did by shooting me in the chest. I fell
back into a pile of trash and just when the guy was about to finish me off with
a bullet to the head, Gaston- Louis came to the rescue. Before I knew it, I was
beside the dead body of the guy, I was covered in blood, and my shirt had
been torn. I think I smashed his head onto concrete until it killed him...
I don't remember the specifics...
I don't know if Gaston-Louis wanted it to happen..."
Jason-
"I could try to avoid something like that from ever happening again but, you never
know. And, you don't need to get me out of the Gaston-Louis situation... I need to
grow a pair of balls and start expecting the worst. But, its up to you on what you
decided to do. What do you think?"
Jason-
"Well, I do have one question. It's kinda been on my mind lately but, what
exactly do you know about Gaston- Louis's past? I might be able to get a
better understanding of him if I know a little more about him."
Jason-
"Interesting...Thanks for the information."
Jason-
"Should we start heading back with the others?"
Vitus passed the cigarette remains to a hobo on their way in the door. Heat
light welcomed them into the small human space. The band was turning it up...

Inside the cloughb,
Eli rolled up, having decided he didn't want to know what Vitus and Jason were talking about.
The Dust Covers were filling the little bar with spooky synth music and heavily altered
guitar picking. Their human audience was a few dozen people near the stage and small
groups in seats against walls. The bar was still serving, but half of it was converted to
a place to sell merch.
These guys appeared at the edge of the world...
Vitus-
Jason- "Hey, everyone's dancing.
"Hmm..," Jason eyed the scene. What do you think?"
Jason-
"I'm not really the uh, dancing type so... I'm going to go and see if I can
find someone interesting for tonight," and with that, he went off in the
opposite direction of the dance floor.
Vitus-
"Not everyone's a dancer. We'll see you."
With that, they parted ways...

The crowd was entirely too human.
Vitus took advantage of the large group of young vampires keeping
each other's interest to get Jason outside for a talk.
Jason was wearing a band shirt along with a beanie and black jeans.
Vitus-
"How's it going?"
Jason-
"Don't worry about me, alright? I'm serious about
this - I don't want someone watching over me."
Vitus-
"So, Jason, you think you'll muddle through OK with Gaston-Louis?
I didn't hear about the specifics of the incident, but do you think
you've figured something out, can avoid that happening again?
Because if not, I think some concern is justified."
Jason-
"At this point, I don't think I can avoid the incident back with Gaston-Louis
from happening again.
Vitus-
"Listen, because you may not have heard this before and it might
change how you feel. No one has any control when they lose it. It's
happened to me before, several times. But we know what causes that
to happen - hunger, or an injury that makes you heal so quickly the
hunger overwhelms. That can be avoided. I haven't killed anyone
in decades.
But it can't be avoided if Gaston-Louis is making that impossible.
I don't know what he is doing, but you should let me know if that's
the case, and I'll try to get you out of 'training' with him. You need
to do it alone, fine, but I'd prefer if I wasn't letting you stay in a sit-
uation that will cause people to get murdered frequently. If I get
you out of it, you can do it alone somewhere more safe for the
general public, right?"
Jason-
"I'm sorry- its just that I've had a lot on my mind. If were going to finish
this conversation we might need to go somewhere else more private.

Vitus-
"Privacy is relative. I wouldn't worry about a human hearing us."
He led Jason into the alley, to put the lad at ease.
Vitus-
"Alright, Jason. How did it end up happening?
What was Gaston-Louis doing?"
Jason-
"Well, it happened when Gaston-Louis and I were searching for someone
to feed off of. As we were looking around for someone, I found a group of
men huddled in a group in an alleyway and Gaston thought that it would
be best if I handled this one- so, I approached them. So, I began talking

I don't remember the specifics...
I don't know if Gaston-Louis wanted it to happen..."
Vitus-
"Hm... I can tell you the bullet to the head wouldn't have finished you
off any more than the bullet to the chest did. But that was guaranteed
to put you into a blood craze. The question - did Gaston-Louis want it
to happen?
I don't know, but now that you know what getting shot does to you, do
you think you can avoid it? Perhaps, if only one foe has a gun, you can
try to use your vampire swiftness to get that weapon out of the fight as
quickly as possible? Or just walk away...
Do you think you can avoid this sort of trouble, now that you know what
to expect? Or should I try to get you out of this Gaston-Louis situation
completely?"
Jason-
"I could try to avoid something like that from ever happening again but, you never
know. And, you don't need to get me out of the Gaston-Louis situation... I need to
grow a pair of balls and start expecting the worst. But, its up to you on what you
decided to do. What do you think?"
Vitus-
"You're still thinking about this wrong. It isn't about courage... Still,
maybe we should wait a little longer and see if it's trouble every night.
If this sort of thing happens again, I'll try to get you out of it. I'm sorry
you had to learn some things the hard way, but now that you've learned,
it might be you can avoid that sort of trouble in the future...
Well, I don't know. Do you have anything
you'd like to talk about or ask me about?"
Jason-
"Well, I do have one question. It's kinda been on my mind lately but, what
exactly do you know about Gaston- Louis's past? I might be able to get a
better understanding of him if I know a little more about him."
Vitus-
"Hm... I haven't thought about it in a long time. Sombreta has always
kept him very close. I think he was turned less than a century after
Sombreta was born, so he's quite powerful. But since she kept him
on a short leash, he hasn't been able to do much with his centuries.
He did manage to study a good deal about martial arts though...
I should say, I can't be sure about any of what I've told you, because
I wasn't alive for most of that time. But it's consistent with what I've
seen since I've been around. He seems to get on best with women who
are professionally obliged to let him get the last word, and with the
kind of humans that have encyclopedic knowledge of action films."
Jason-
"Interesting...Thanks for the information."
Jason-
"Should we start heading back with the others?"
Vitus-
"Lead the way."
Vitus passed the cigarette remains to a hobo on their way in the door. Heat
light welcomed them into the small human space. The band was turning it up...
EARLIER~
Inside the cloughb,
Jack-
"--something else, you know?"
Darren-
"And now we know you don't know anything about music."
Courtney-
"You of all people should know better than to be a snob about musical
knowledge. How many chords did you use on 'Creept'? Two? Three?"
Darren-
"Wow. I forgot that cut existed. What kind of crate digger are you?"
Courtney-
"I'm no vinyl fetishist. I just know some people."
Eli rolled up, having decided he didn't want to know what Vitus and Jason were talking about.
Eli-
"Ah, boom! Nice one, Court. I know what chords are.
What do you guys think of this bippy beepy stuff going on?"
Jack- Tristan-
"Pretty good but, complicated?" "I don't think we listened to the
same darkwave musics. These
guys are pratty good though."
Darren-
"If you say so. Man, Eli, is Jason smokin' out
there? That's a silly thing to do now, isn't it?"
Courtney-
"Or is now the perfect time to do it?"
The Dust Covers were filling the little bar with spooky synth music and heavily altered
guitar picking. Their human audience was a few dozen people near the stage and small
groups in seats against walls. The bar was still serving, but half of it was converted to
a place to sell merch.
Eli-
"He is... I... don't know why. He's a hella weird dude.
Guess it's better than trying to pour grain alcohol into
whatever we got in there now."
Jack- Tristan-
"Can't fault him for tryin'." "We went to get counselor for our hads, kinda
like, what a weird night, yeah? Gotta shake it off."
Darren-
"no foolin"
Eli-
"I didn't know being a vampire was so bourgeois...
Are we getting spray tans after this?"
Tristan-
"Ha ha!"
Tristan-
Jack- "Wait, I don't get it."
"It's because poor people can't
afford mental health care, so it's like, we have to be act now."
Darren-
"All I know is it sucked Courtney-
and I ain't goin' back." "Whatever, we're kind of...
in our element here. Might as
well try to enjoy the music."
Eli-
"What... enjoy ourselves? Who ever heard of such a thing?
We need our government-issued capes so we can go weep
on the rooftops and stuff."
Tristan-
Jack- "Now I riiilly don't gat it."
"The key word is enjoy ourselves.
There's not much of a dance floor to lose yourself in, but
we brought a crowd with us, didn't we? Who wants to dance?"
Darren-
"Nope." Courtney-
"I was never tops on the dance
floor. I'll keep Mr. Nope company."
Eli-
"Well, my sense of humor seems to be a
bust so I must dance to earn my keep."
Jack- Tristan-
"That's the attitude! Let's go." "Haha? heh? OK."
These guys appeared at the edge of the world...
Vitus-
Jason- "Hey, everyone's dancing.
