"Is everything memories of memories?" How could she become a timeless actress if she forgot how to be human? It would be the ultimate challenge, Babette supposed.
"Mortal food is variety, really, in texture and flavor. My last meal had meat, chocolate cake, and fancy little noodles shaped like this." She looped her finger through the air. "I suppose that's what I'll miss the most. Variety. Then again, is it better to eat an array of mediocre things for one hundred years, or to consume the same excellent staple? I assume that blood will never lose its appeal to us."

Aubrey- "Yess! Oh what an experience, it seems so pleasurable. 'Noodles', they went like 'this?' Oh! Wonderful..." He sat the bowls on the table neatly, and placed rusted antique silverware around them like they were a delicate flower arrangement. He pulled out a rickety chair for Babette to sit on. Aubrey- "Blood... In a sense we cannot grow tired of it, much in the way humans don't grow tired of breathing their air, I'd imagine. There is more pleasure to be had than simple breathing, I'm sure you've noticed. All these centuries, it can grow a bit wearisome but I know of ways to make it more entertaining. I can show you. Despite that, I enjoy seeing the mortals eating, chewing...I cannot help but feel envious. Do you know that their bellies light up as they eat? I can see the warmth sliding down their throats. How must it feel? I can only imagine." He leaned over the bubbling cauldron, and plunged a bare hand into the boiling liquid. Aubrey- "Yes, it's ready... I don't cook really, as you say. I am only a craftsman and this is an art I cannot fathom, let alone create. This is only a performance, a hollow imitation. A ragged old bird shrieking out human syllables. But I do hope you will enjoy it."
He scooped up the hot 'soup' into a huge iron ladle, and poured it haphazardly into the wooden bowls. It was dark, and opaque, but it did smell quite good... The silverware were hopelessly corroded and bent. Babette's spoon was lined with slits-- a slotted spoon. The soup would pour right out. Aubrey ignored the silverware and tilted his bowl straight to his lips, and drank down the still bubbling broth. He washed it down with messy gulps from a caraffe the size of a milk jug. It ran off his chin and went splattering into the 'soup.'
Aubrey- "You look so darling this evening, with these simple garments. Would you like me to feed you, my little sparrow?"

"No, Darling, I want you to toast me." She chucked her mostly plucked flowers aside and raised the bowl.
"To the martyrs who sustain us. I'm so sorry." Babette threw back the bowl and omnomnomed as quickly as she could. It was like drinking medicine; the faster she swallowed, the quicker it would pass. Pretty tasty medicine, though."When you say you've lived centuries - may I ask, how many? If that's rude, do forgive me."

Aubrey- "Beloved Martyrs! How do you know my every thought? Praise God and praise the Worshipers!"
The 'soup' was scalding hot, but the searing pain in her throat and mouth quickly dissipated. It was like eating horrible hot peppers with no afterburn. Pretty cool if you like intense pain. Nonetheless, blood was blood and this was fresh and it felt pretty good. Aubrey- "I do not mind your asking at any moment, my love. I am.. hm, has it really been seven centuries? Perhaps less. I recall the construction of this estate. Do you even learn of these times in your academies? Or do they not lecture on the same subjects to young women?" He squinted, and reached out a bloody hand to pick something off Babette's cheek. Aubrey- "Ah, just a bit of bone..."
He let his hand linger, and traced a bony wet finger across her cheek and around her ear.

"B-bone? Lawda mimbo." She suddenly ducked down and wiped her mouth on the hem of her dress. If Ru or the rest of her friends saw her with bone dangling from her cheek, they might never speak to her again. What a lonely life, with nobody but Lord Greyburn and Billy-quinn to keep her company.
"They teach the men and women together, believe it or not. But I never paid much attention to history. It seemed awfully sad to dwell on the past ... just another reminder that time waits for nobody. I'm sure you're in the textbooks, though, as royalty." Maybe he was in registry of historical serial killers. Well, he gave her permission to ask anything."Aubrey, I spoke to Thierry yesterday. He fraternizes with demons. What do you think about that?"

He let his hand drift away from her face, but moved on to draw designs on the back of her hand and up her arm with the blood dribbles that spotted the table. Aubrey- "You speak of the evil child with the foul mouth and the fouler disposition? I do not understand how Inka finds this ratty wastrel worthy of immortal life to begin with. Of course he will use her godly powers for wickedness."
Aubrey- "But do not fear him and his little 'demons'. He uses them only for his selfish interests, and cannot harm or affect anyone larger than a weakened mouse. And you are safe with me... forever."

"Yes, yes, nothing to fear down here forever. Those naughty witch boys aren't invited, I hope! Heehee." Ellen, come to me.
She wondered if she could convey longer messages with familial telepathy. Babette concentrated.
Hurry! I'm eating people stew. "Look at the pretty tattoos you've made. Why don't we find the others and ..." She was going to say, 'Share the meal,' but that might frighten some of her friends. They did not yet accept the vampire's damnable condition. O lament, o woe!"... show them your chains? They're rather symbolic. August would appreciate that. He's a director."

Aubrey- "Yes, damned are the witches, and blessed are we, darling! It's time for the party, isn't it? Can we see your movie film? I want to see you stretched across my wall, luminous in the flickering light." He stood, and took her hand. Aubrey- "My love, all of this is a show for you. It is fiction, make it as you will."

"Fiction? An illusion? That's marvelous. I do envy your power. My greatest illusion has been a cowlick in the mirror." She patted his arm friendfully.
"So the soup was just smoke and mirrors, too? How impressive. I even felt the heat." Hurrah! She almost thought she'd need therapy after that meal.

Aubrey- "Ahaha, you delight me as ever. Of course our meal was quite real, don't you feel it still in your belly? I mean this domain, these halls and mirrors, they are nothing. Go where your heart desires, and I shall follow."

"Ooooh, of course it was." Babette threw an arm across her eyes, as if lamenting a great loss, and ran forward. After a second, she lowered her arm, because it wouldn't do to blindly charge into an iron maiden, illusion or not. Rather than retracing her steps, she journeyed to the other end of the hall. Along the way, she asked Aubrey,
"If this is fiction, can you turn the walls glass? Can you make blood rain from the ceiling?" Maybe, with pretend glass walls, she'd catch a glimpse of her friends. It was a silly plan, but she might as well try. Plus, Babette wanted to know the extent of his special effect powers.
The blood thing was just to set the mood.

Aubrey- "Aw, how sweet. Would that make your heart happy? Your wish is granted!"
Hot blood coursed down from from the unknowable darkness above, and ran over the filthy mirrors that lined the twisting hallway. The blood seemed to wash away the dullness. The silver backings, curled to uselessness, washed away as well. Babette saw a strange darkness behind them, and the hall felt like an aquarium full of blood, and they the strange inhabitants. The air was muggy and sweltering with the dribbling gore that darkened the plaster walls, and pattered on their shoulders. Aubrey followed her closely, his cold wet fingers curled around hers. The heavy chains clanked behind him, the ends still unseen. Aubrey- "Are you happy, darling?"

Up ahead, a light bobbed in the air - a false light. She could see that it was made of illusion, and August was aglow in its false rays. Behind him she could see the heads of others popping in and out of view. August could not yet see her, despite looking straight in their direction.
