PLZ anyone who is older than me add on/correct me. (I was 4 in 1987 :x)
Keep these things in mind...
* No cell phones (if you aren't like, a power broker in LA.) Most phones are not cordless. Teenagers used pay phones fairly often if they were out of the house and needed to call home/their friend.
*Almost no one has a computer unless they are a 'computer guy/girl.' You might have an NES or other video game system though. Probably not if you are a girl, unless you are very ahead of your time or have brothers. (Feel free to be progressive!
*If you are a weirdo and like exotic things, you would learn about them from mail-order magazines generally, and order your specialty items from the back of a magazine. (Like Goth paraphernalia, rare music etc.) Subculture fashion would often be DIY/hand-made.
* If you are too cool, you would spend time driving to the big city to hang out.
* You were born in the '70s, the children of people born in the early '50s/'40s. There is an anti-disco/the '70s vibe because everyone hates what their parents like.
* Music is played on cassettes mostly, but still some hold-outs of records/8 track. You might have a Walkman or a cassette player in your car, otherwise the radio.
* Hip-hop/rap is in a weird state. You'd have to be pretty damn hip to be into what will evolve into our modern conception of rap at this point. (KRS-ONE and Boogie Down productions etc.) Public Enemy and NWA will come out in two years. Right now you might be into Beastie Boys (even if you're black :X), RUN DMC, Grandmaster Flash and LL Cool J is fairly new.
* Some hip genres at this time are metal, post-punk, hair metal, punk rock, 'C-86'/'twee', new wave... otherwise Madonna/Michael Jackson.
*Horror movies and other movies marketed to teenagers are big right now. There's a very teen-centric culture happening. This pop-culture view of life effects a lot of people, people begin to except things out of life based on what they see on TV/the movies.
* Cable TV is big, most people have it. People rent VHS tapes from rental stores. People who stay at home may watch a lot of day-time television/soap operas.
* Teenagers would like to hang out at the video arcade/fast food restaurants/their friend's houses/ house parties/ parks and other outdoor places.
* A lot of teenagers smoke, and word about smoking/drugs being bad for you is starting to get a lot of press. (DARE and other programs, after school specials...)
If you're a drug kid, you probably smoke pot, smoke cigarettes, drink, occasionally eat some pills when available. If you're really rich you might get some coke. There's a lot of talk about crack, but that's mostly a more urban thing.
* If you work you probably work at the mall, fast-food, babysitting, minor office jobs at your parent's work, bag-boy/girl at grocery, convenience store, other retail... and you get paid almost nothing.
* Your parents are likely into self-help bullshit/hippy dippy crapola. There's a lot of talk about self-esteem, peer-pressure and that kind of thing.
