The good doctor had the sense to turn on the flashlight after a few moments. He reached over and patted Patti's hand, giving a small nod. His attention turned back towards the outside and bounced between the elder and the young man. "Well, let's get up and out shall we, friend? Alex, could you be a pal and carry this dufflebag for me? I'd trust you're more capable of feats of fitness than I could be. Come along, friend. We have a little bit of a walk before we can get some sleep tonight." The good doctor extended his hand to the elderly man and offered a dampened smile. He helped him get off the rail onto the thin ramp and had a thought. "Do you have change for a five, friend?" The doctor dug into his wallet and pulled out a slightly wrinkled five dollar bill. If I can get a look at his wallet, I can at least call him something besides 'friend.' I don't think it'd be best to name anyone else for the time being... especially considering the ever-aptly named Mary."Well, come on, all. It's not as if we could wait here for the next train run..."

At the door to the last car, Patti and Alex got their bearings and joined the crowd, while Doc Vic had his conversation. The old man did bring out his wallet briefly, and the doctor had to trick him into dropping it to get a good look. It went off without incident. The man's name was Luke Cornell. His last ID was not horribly out of date and was from the state of Colorado. Luke- "Be more careful, youngster. It's too damn dark in here." The largest group of survivors disembarked from the middle car, having been privy to none of the things going on ahead of or behind them, but for muffled screams and yells. Even the most competent of them seemed disoriented, this being a place transit riders normally never see. Anna- "Holy shit it's dark." She waved her torch slowly and began walking toward the stairs.
Basil- (to Nat)
"What the devil was going on in your car? I heard the young shirtless fellow bellowing." James- "You know where we going Miss Anna?"
Anna- "I'll know when we get out of the tunnel." Everybody followed Anna with minimal chit chat, except as noted.
At Micah's end, Jackson helped him up from the spew, glancing at the carnage in the car. Jackson- "Damn, dude. It's like uncle stories about fucking Vietnam now. That happened quick. I'm sorry."

The train conductor got out from his cab and hopped outside. The doors remained opened, and he didn't seem like we was going to come back to close them. Train driver - "Just follow me, it's straight up the stairs to the street though... Dunno what's gonna be out there, and I don't particularly want to go first either."
He walked down the thin concrete strip, deeper into the tunnel and towards a stairwell door. He carried a large, broad bladed snow shovel emblazoned with the Metro logo, and caked with congealing blood.

Micah had gone into shock, the tunnel around him seemed to bend and contort. He grabbed onto the older man without so much as a word, and held as tightly as he could. His body still trembled, and he struggled to take a step, without Jackson there to hold him up. "Hmm you smell nice..." he mumbled. He let Jackson lead him out, oblivious to anything around him. ( Micah is doing a Nat impression hahaha)

Jackson supported Micah, they were about the same height but Jackson was built a lot more sturdy, thankfully.
Jackson- "Oh man, are you okay? Hey, just take it easy, I'll help you out."
Jackson had a very calming voice, and did smell nice-- a bit sweaty but with a pleasant pine/cinnamon sort of aftershave. Micah got to examine his forearm tattoos in detail (along with nice forearm muscles...) as he helped him along the narrow strip, Micah's feet still slogging and slurping, soaked with blood.

Aside from the screams, shouting, and the lights flickering out, the train ride was fairly uneventful. Nat, of course, started at all three of these occurences, sitting uncomfortably at the edge of his seat. Nat had not actually been paying attention to the argument between Dr. V and Patti, not until Alex's outburst, at least. He had only just begun to puzzle through the argument when the screaming began - coming from a different car, further along the train - and then, soon after that, the lights flicked out, leaving him in near total darkness. Nat expected the worst then, he expected the ghostly apparitions to reappear, clutch at him with their boney fingers, and rip his soul free from his body. He expected the possessed woman, Mary, to suddenly lunge up out of the dark, like one of those stupid knee-jerk scare websites. Neither of those things happened, however, and he was left to fret in the dark, clutching at Sarah's hand as she sat beside him. When the doors opened Nat joined the others in a hurry to get off the train. He stumbled and nearly tripped on the concrete, just barely catching himself before he fell forward face-first. He had just regained his footing when Basil approached him. "I-I don't... They were... They were arguing about leaving someone behind." It worried him, once he said it - what if they wanted to leave him behind? He wasn't, exactly, the most useful member of their little entourage. He wondered, briefly, if they would have even come back for him, when he, and Sarah, and the others, had been waiting in the mall... But he couldn't think about that now, he shook it off. "I-I don't think they will, 'though. L-Leave anyone behind, I mean." Again, Nat would follow the others, his unlit torch held awkwardly at his side (he had put it out before getting on the train, and it wasn't like he had a lighter or anything to rekindle it.)

tab As soon as the train doors opened, Patti and Jackson leapt out and moved as quickly as they could in the darkness, to where they found Micah bent over and retching. Wondering what caused the reaction, even though she knew better, she looked into the car. tab Bile rose in the back of her mouth and she almost lost it. Can't lose it. As stupid as this all is, people are looking to me as a leader. God! Why can't people take care of their own damned selves? She placed her hand on the side of the car momentarily to get her balance, then followed Micah and Jackson towards the rest of the group and the stairwell.

Alex juggled the doctor's bag, his torch, and his weapon until he found balance. Then, he squinted through the darkness at Dr. Victor, half-expecting the guy to push Grandfather Scruffy into an open manhole somewhere. What would they encounter above ground? Alex tried to think positively, but his now-exhausted mind hinted that Mary would be waiting for them. He fell into step behind Anna. Alex hoped the water at her place still worked, and maybe she had a fridge full of leftovers. Yeah. Good food: hamburgers, fries, fruit salad, and carrots. He loved raw carrots. Given the chance, he'd eat carrots until they turned him orange. Thinking about food took Alex's mind off of more disturbing matters, so he threw himself into a lush banquet fantasy. But what would Alex do if Anna was a vegetarian? He paled at the thought. They'd have to raid other apartments for meat. Suddenly, Sensei Ben caught Alex's attention. Boy, he sure was a lady-killer. Those Asian girls had been practically hanging off his arms all night. Had Emiliano been right when he claimed that nerds were the new Lotharios?

tab Ben didn't feel like a lady-killer at all, and just thought himself lucky to be able to remain close to the two Daiso girls. He didn't feel like looking that gift horse in the mouth, but his tiny, inner psychopath whispered that they might, more or less subconsciously, accept him because he could provide some protection from danger. Which he of course intended to do, if it ever came to that. tab But he wondered how he could possibly get to know them better. Talking about things other than the ongoing apocalypse seemed too frivolous, and they didn't seem to have much to say on that subject. He would have to ask them about their plans later. Maybe they had families that they'd want to get in touch with? Right now their destination was already decided, and who knew if they'd even be able to get there? Even the simple train ride hadn't gone according to plan.

Sarah- "Basil, I wouldn't worry about it. We aren't exactly The Partridge Family, but we haven't started shanking each other yet.... Nat, if you can hold up just a little longer... Maybe when we get some place safe and you can calm down, you can deal with this better... Come on."
Jackson- (supporting Micah, talking to Patti) "I think he'll be fine. As fine as any of us can be." Everyone moved with purpose, but still slow in the dim space.

The group walked down the thin edge of the tunnel, narrower than a sidewalk. Some people held to the backs of their friends' shirts, afraid of tripping, not that there was anywhere far to go with the train next to them. The tunnel was full of eerie whistling noises echoing and bouncing around the strangely textured walls. The industrial lights buzzed loudly and it smelled strongly of oil and the tang of metal. The train driver went up the stairwell first, carrying the gory shovel like he was straight out of that American Gothic painting. Anna was close to the front as well, Tyrone feeling embarrassed about hesitating given that he had a gun, tried to push ahead as well. Jackson made up the rear carrying the distraught Micah. Those entering the stairwell were surprised to see it went directly up, no twisting around corners and multiple flights. They really began to see how for down they were as they walked the endless stairs. They could see a dim orange glow coming from a door at the very top, there seemed to still be power in this area. They trudged up the stairs slower for having so many people.
At the top, the train conductor paused.
Train driver- "I'll go out there first, but you're never gonna see me again. Sorry. I'm going to my car, and getting the fuck out of here. Good luck."
With that, he opened the stairwell door, and stepped out into cold night air and glow of orange street lights.
(After you climb the stairs and leave, please move to the new thread THE STREET - 911 PINE STREET)
