Hehehe, I love how rats are super important on your magna carta list, so they have their own category separate from non-human animals. I love rats, too! They'll play a fairly important role in my NaNoWriMo attempt, actually.
Out of curiosity, how do you feel about animals that act like humans, such as characters from the Redwall series?

I'm curious about 'mental disability', what do you mean by that? Do you just mean characters that aren't nuerotypical? There was a fantastic Spanish film about a guy with Down's syndrome that was quite eye opening in a good way.

@chris: Potentially! @deek: Rats are my babies. c-: Never heard of Redwall. It seems like it demonizes species, which I think is deplorable. I love anthropomorphic stuff that doesn't play favorites like with Beatrix Potter stories, Miyazaki films, and Krazy Kat. ∆§Indea§∆: I have Asperger's Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder among other mental disabilities. Characters that also are on the spectrum or similar I find easy to relate to.

@ Kristi - You and Jara have that in common - one of his huge pet peeves are books/movies that demonize wolves, for example. Redwall is a children's series, where the critters basically act like humans living during Medieval times.

@kirstie- Gotcha, see I just wouldn't personally use the term disability because I don't agree with the connotations of it. I like non nuerotypical characters too when they're done well.

A lot of accepted terminology is in flux right now, and in America some people were OK with "disabled" when the Americans With Disabilities Act was passed in the '90s. Even before that some were suggesting "differently abled," and so on.
A trans issues blogger named Natalie Reed had a good post about how labels are both cultural and personal to where universal solutions may not be found - and that's OK. Personally, I think we'd all benefit from broader consensus, but ... c'est lavie.

Going to be frank here when I say that my aspie inability to always deal with common social situations, my O.C.D. that makes it hard for me to even take care of myself, and my dyscalculia disable me in lots of ways. Saying "differently abled" sounds like a roundabout way of saying "mental disability" from my perspective, and I like to make it known I definitely need extra help and consideration.
I do prefer the phrasing "person with a mental disability" to "mentally disabled person" for literal reasons, though. A "mentally disabled person" sounds like somebody that's disabled full stop while a "person with a mental disability" has some specific disabling quirks within a larger, package.

Likes: - Creepy Stuff
- Unexplained Creepy Stuff
- Dragons as Main or Major Characters
- Magic/Mages being treated as a Minority (I guess sort of BURN THE WITCH... but. >> I like how magic and mages are handled in Dragon Age, and sort of how they hint at in The Coldfire Trilogy during Tarrant's time)
- Non-traditional gender roles/sexualities
- Cat People
- Magic at a Cost
- Character Development
- Creepy Twins
- Albino Characters
- Dog-monsters
- Well written smut that ties in to the plot
- Badguys who think they're doing Good
- Stuff Based in Mythology
- Awesome Well Thought Out Fantasy Mythologies
- Lovecraftian Horror (but... pls not writing style... too dense... can't read...)
- Ambiguous Monsters/Things You Don't See
- World Building
Dislikes: - Slapstick
- Animal Abuse
- Mary Sues
- Super-powerful Magical/Psychic Children
- Children that are Wise Beyond Their Years
- Children in general (most of the time, anyway)
- Downer Endings
- Graphic Violence/Rape
- Characters that are Unnecessarily Bitchy for No Good Reason
- Plot Devices that Make No Sense
- Plot Twist Endings
- Black and White/Good and Evil
- Damsels in Distress
I'll probably think of more later. And well. Some of my dislikes are very uh. Situational? Like Children, for instance. I have liked some stuff with child main characters (like Daughter of Hounds, for instance), but generally, it doesn't seem like they're very well written, so. Dislike. Things and stuff. Yes.

Most of what I read is fantasy of one sort or another. ;p And well, a lot of what I've read recently has been fantasy. Asunder (a Dragon Age novel), Blood of Tyrants (which is the most recent Temeraire novel), then Dragon Champion by E. E. Knight. Then I *started* reading Feast of Souls by C.S. Friedman... got distracted. And now I'm rereading The Red Tree. Which I consider fantasy of a sort, but... more subtle? And well, more creepy.
It's hurting me that I only have a couple books available right now. Most of them are still packed in boxes from the move at the beginning of October.

kilnarak: I like the handling of the mages' role in society in the Dragon Age series, also! Ties right on in to my love for infamous good characters. Yaaayy mages.
