I got as far as the verdant tunnel in Kelly's story. Two observations...
First, the level of detail enlivens the setting in a real-world fantastical sort of way, like those pictures people like to post on Facebook of dilapidated castle manors or cliffside monasteries.
Second, the first-person delivery isn't one I've seen used much (outside of Lovecraft), but it lends a verité that immediately invests the reader in the future of the protagonist. I'd compare it favorably to Blair Witch, but that would likely backfire since diehard horror fans usually seem to hate that movie.

One more thing to DeeK, Kilnarak, Eli, and my Brosef. You don't have to post your stories here - I'd like to read them to verify you won if you want the HorrorBoys prize. However I think we'd all like to at least see excerpts, if you're willing or able. Eli, I know you sometimes prefer to work analog. If you do that, maybe you could post cell phone photos of fun parts or something. What do you think? edit- Brett, I'll let Kelly know that if he doesn't get to reading comments soon. Thanks.

Hey thanks man! I don't usually write 1st person stories, so it's a fun challenge. The story is mostly only going to have the narrator so I'm hoping it will make the world seem less empty. It's hard to keep the tense right though but I'll fix any problems in post. I'm glad I picked the location I did, it's easy to get the word count with describing lovely plants and junk. The year I won I also found that having the environment play a significant role helps word count.

@ Re the comment about Root Rot - I really love the voice of Root Rot, which shines through fantastically in the first person. But I don't know if I should read the stuff you guys post before I finish this November. You make me feel inadequate! ;;-;; They're all so entertaining and well-written, especially for first drafts.
I'll probably put chapters or excerpts of chapters when they're finished.

@root rot-Wow is all I can say. I totally agree with the other guys!! The first person is great and you easily get to know the character. The descriptions are dazzling, they make you feel like you're right there alright. It's very witty too, love the dry subtle humor. It doesn't seem at all like a first draft damn you! Neither does Chris's, damn you both. @deek- At work now but I can't wait to read your story!! I think it's going to be brilliant and I know I'm right. I'm freaking out with my own lack of deep descriptions, I think I might be rushing too fast but it's a first draft and my first NaNoWriMo attempt. Gotta make it to 25,000...

Indea & DeeK- Noes! Don't be discouraged by our stylez! Kelly doesn't count because anyone comparing themselves to him is like Edward Cullen comparing himself to Dracula. As for me, I spent hours writing that stuff and will not be able to keep doing that if I want to win. I will get worse, believe me!
And do carry on...

Hahaha, thanks you guys. I think I'm only good at bypassing first drafts because I do pretty much all the writing for the Kingfisher in one go, with like, no sleep. It's good practice. It's always the last thing I do and I'm brain dead by that point. I'm amazed I don't have more heinous misspellings. Imagine, I'm doing this writing with a couple of hours of sleep under my belt! PS Christopher, don't call everyone in the world Edward Cullenz, it's just rude! PS I need to read y'alls stories once I get this comic done!

This is a long shot, but has anyone in the vicinity of this forum read the Twilight series? Uh, maybe you did it ironically? I want to know whether Dracula has been mentioned in the books, because that would be really funny. Well, I wear tinted sunscreen (Aveno) with glitter innit, so Edward and I share some qualities.
@ Kelly - I really dig your kaleidoscopic profile pic on the nanowrimo site, by the way. Is that new? I don't remember seeing it among the digital arts in your portfolio.

I did read the first one in high school admittedly, it was before it took off. It was shit, no mention of Dracula unfortunately. The comparison is very apt but rude. Oh god it takes me back to the 90's when you used to slather on body glitter like nobody's business. We were all Edward Cullen then but slightly less surly. EDIT: @dk- I read your story, I read your story!! So so good, I love Fabi!! Only problem is I'm on tenterhooks for more!

@ DK-- oh yeah that's my Ian Curtis icon I use here and there, I tried to attach a bigger version here but proboards hates it apparently. @ Indea-- I was just saying tonight how everyone says 'tender hooks' and it's so weird! Thank you for saying it correctly!

Where is everybody posting their stories, by the way? Mine is still chilling in the Scary Stories forum, but yeah. Can I have a list of links or something?

Where is everybody posting their stories, by the way? Mine is still chilling in the Scary Stories forum, but yeah. Can I have a list of links or something? The stories are in this here NANOWRIMO subforum. Each thread is titled with the author's name and the working title of the story. Discussion and praise will occur in this thread. DeeK, don't worry that I haven't said anything about your story yet, I promise it isn't an "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all" situation, but a "I haven't had time to read it yet" situation. Marissa is leaving for Western Kansas in a few and I'm going to my highly irregular monthly game (think we're playing Munchkin Quest today). I should have time tonight to read it and give my undoubtedly positive feedback. I have maybe 150 words of one prose poem done. Maybe I'll get something done tonight with Marissa gone.

Oy. It's rough. We ended up skipping writing yesterday and K has been up over 24 hours now with art-related duties. Once again, it's totally my fault. I oughtta make a comic about that. Kristi- What Brett said. On this page: horrorboys.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=nanowrimo you can see where other peeps have created new threads with their name and the working title. If you want everything counting toward your NaNo score in one place, copy/paste it into a new thread there, maybe under the name "Kristi - Short Story Collection." Discussion of NaNo stories happens in this thread, as well as just lamenting the travails of writing hard.

@ Brett - No worries! I don't expect that anyone who is doing Nanowrimo this year will have free time during November.
@ Indea - Thank you!!! You are the bestest. I think Bad Scientists will be much sillier than I originally planned.
Edit: "Tender hooks" is kind of spooky. It's like something from the hellraiser series
