Wow, yeah that's an awesome incentive indeed!! @brett- I suggest just write for yourself and screw anything else. As long as it genuine it'll be good. I don't think you have to worry about offending, you seem like a pretty inoffensive guy.

@ Brett - I haven't read much of your work, but People Pot Pies is one of the few poems that impacted me (and I've read lots of poems) - I've never been good at explaining how a piece of writing is good, but that was good: it certainly has artistic merit. You seem to be your own biggest critic.

There are so many pages since I was here last. :-O
Um, anybody that wants to add me to their friends on NaNoWriMo site can do so!

I'm just gonna..sort of..casually..resurrect myself on here I've done (and won!) NaNoWriMo a couple-ish times but last year I didn't quite make the cut, meaning I'm now twice as determined. Usually I go into it with an outline and character backstories going all the way back to preschool and I was going to do the same this year but I am very last minute throwing that out the window to use more of the sites prompts throughout the month. My (semi) last minute and not yet fully explored plot idea..it's a typical man-eating monster meets tragic, lonely, beautiful human story..only the honeymoon is cut short when those pesky (human) cannibals show up again. I don't usually write violent or stop-the-baddie type stories so this is new and I'm excited! If you want to buddy up to me, here I am: nanowrimo.org/participants/princeofstars(Profile's pretty empty since I've done most of my NaNo-ing offline and with pen and paper in the past.) I've been looking at everyone's ideas and I'm already excited to read them (in print?)!

Eli- Your idea sounds good. You mentioned on your NaNo profile you like to use queer characters. Could it be, someone will write a story living up to the concept that inspired our writing sub-board? horrorboys.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=writing&action=display&thread=443&page=1My own story will feature a gay main character, but isn't going to be horror. Apparently, I'm no kind of Horror Boy this year. It's called "A Nihilist Reads Camus," and I've got a rough outline in my head already. Pretty much the plot described by the working title, plus teen drama stuffs. Also, Eli & Kristi- I buddied you guys as soon as you mentioned it was possible, but have not been buddied back.

Wait let me figure out how to do that first...
Got it! We buddies.
Questions about things: Are those of us without word count goals exempt from the Horror Boys prize, is there going to be a sort of first, second, and third place system involved, am I right to assume that if a person writing multiple stories won then they would have to pick one story for the custom cover, which forums can story summaries go into, and how involved would the author be in the cover's design?
(Bricked for too many questions.)

Hm... I'd really prefer if there was a word count goal, even if it's low. On The Kingfisher's last update, Kelly said it should be over 10,000. If you set a goal of 10,001 words by the end of October, that's only a little over 333 words a day - around half a page in default formatting on an average word processor program. There's no plans for a ranked prizes, but it might help drive competitive types. Or could it discourage people who aren't? I don't know. I put it to the crowd. The author can say whatever they like for the cover design, and we'll come back with an answer as to whether it would entail too much labor and need to be scaled back, or was fine as is. We won't do more than one round of very easy revisions, but of course you can tweak the images all you like and use them as you want. For copyright, I'd say the more you mangle it after it leaves our hands, the more you can just call it your own. If you take it as is or close to it, just credit us wherever you publish it. As for how you choose the cover matter, that's all you. I think about compilations of stories I've seen in the past (old scifi pulps etc) and they'd often have an amazing image suggestive of a cool story, which turned out to have nothing to do with the crap inside the covers. It's a fun way to go.

@deek- Damn, I thought it was some other sea loving person writing about a laboratory.

Buddies have been buddied back! Guess there is no slacking off this time with you all seeing my scrappy little word goal bar.
@ Christopher - But of course! Both the main characters are gender nonconforming and, if I know me, most of the minor characters will probably be queer as well (I've already got plans for an on-again-off-again love interest that goes dark side).

Eli- Tremendous. Fangtastic. Can't wait to read it.
Now I realized I should reiterate something here. Officially, NaNo peeps recommend you do not share your novel until November is over. On this forum, we will be breaking that rule. I, at least, will publish my novel here as I go.
None of you have to post your novel here or elsewhere, but can if you'd like. Keep in mind you don't want to let the publicity encourage you to edit. Editing is the enemy of word count. It's understood this is a first draft.
If you aren't showing your novel, but want to just show little bits from time to time, use the excerpts thread in the NaNoWriMo sub-board.

I'll post either excerpts or the whole thing, we'll see. Self editing will be hard, I have trouble with sentences a lot because sometimes I'll reread a sentence and realise it's giving a completely different meaning to the one intended.

Kill your inner editor, and resurrect them in December. Sounds like a rolling first draft by Indea would be a Freudian delight. You should post the whole thing!

I agree! Post them! Personally, the concepts seem really cool, and I don't wanna wait to read them.
