"Facebook." he said simply.[/i] "People shared everything. They drew the line at actual account numbers, but everything else was out there. 'Bank of America totally screwed me over, so I switched to Wells Fargo. They even offered me a premium Hot Shit account with an APR of a zillion percent. Dope!'" He rolled his eyes and dropped his bunny quote fingers.[/i] "Guys like him, I'd just squat and use their homes and stuff. If I needed money, I targeted scam artists, mobsters, politicos, and corporate raider types. The Russians in Seattle were pretty easy pickings. идиотка." He poured another glass, then recorked the bottle. He started towards the bathroom again with the bottle.[/i] "This should still be good next time we come over. I try to be moderate these days. It don't take much to lose your edge. The first time I came over here after the first week I got a little tipsy and nearly got taken out by a zombie that was missing both legs. That was before I met you all." "Anyway, you want to see something cool?" He gestured towards the bathroom door with the bottle.[/i]

"Oh my gawsh! You were living on the edge, Wolf. I wish I met you back in the day - thrillers and antiheroes were all the rage in publishing. Your life is the breed of adventure that brings in real book money." She resisted trying to snatch the wine bottle from Wolf and finishing it off. He was right - getting tipsy just wasn't safe anymore, though it seemed more desirable than ever.[/i] "Okay, show me what's behind the mystery door. I'm always game for something cool." What could it be? Hmm ...[/i] "Is it a MONET?"

He lead her into the bathroom. It was pretty fancy, clearly intended to serve as the guest bathroom for long term guests, fully decked out with a marble steam shower, and fancy tile throughout.[/i] "You know, when people rob houses, they never look in the bathroom. They never even go in." He stepped into the shower and turned the main knob to 90 degrees, then he turned the steam knob backwards to 180 degrees. Molly heard a heavy, metallic thunk. There was a hiss and the back wall of the shower recessed and then swung freely inward, revealing a narrow, but fairly deep, room, lined in stainless steel shelves.[/i] "I removed all the fuses, so this is the only space in the building that gets power from the solar panel." There was all manner of things on the shelves: velvet boxes, humidors, a couple of stainless steel briefcases, three laptops, a couple dozen external hard drives, a bunch of tubular cases with shoulder straps, and a hell of a lot of liquor and wine bottles.[/i] "I'll give you the pick of any one thing in here, then we gotta go. We don't want to be gone too long."

"Incredible. It's like a twenty-first century version of Indiana Jones. If you're Indie, I'll be any sidekick but Willie." One of those locked briefcases might be a new Arc of the Covenant! Molly stepped inside and scrutinized each item. She'd always acknowledged that people had secrets, but this Wasko fellow was above and beyond perplexing. And he didn't hold a light to the man who'd been impersonating him during the apocalypse.
[/i] "Are you sure this is really all right? Anything?" She could go for a rare bottle of something strong, but the mystery of Mr. Esquire was more compelling. Plus, real writers carried their stories in briefcases. She picked up a case and tried to open it.[/i] "When I unlock that safe in our basement, you'll have first choice, I promise!"

Not privy to the thoughts in Molly's head, Wolf was unable to correct her. This was all his booty. Most of it, anyway.[/i] "Anything you want. What once had intrinsic value, no longer does." The case was locked. She couldn't discern a locking mechanism at first. Wolf came over and placed his thumbs on two black circles near the handle. At his touch, a pink line ran across under his thumbs and the circles turned blue. The case cracked open just a hair.
As she lifted the top of the case, a faint blue glow from inside grew brighter. As her anticipation mounted, so it seemed the intensity of the glow increased. When she finally got the case open she had to blink a few times to clear her vision. The case contained...
What looked like a very small computer. A seven inch screen was surrounded by what must have been a million different types of ports. A small keyboard of blue light was projected on the shelf in front of the case.[/i] "Yeah, sorry, I always have fun with that one. I used to use that to crack networks from inside the server room. That doesn't sound all that useful, but if I can get in the room, I can have a backdoor installed in a matter of minutes, saving several weeks of hacking effort. I get impatient, so I found that was usually worth the risk."

"I still want the briefcase," she said, "but I'm going to need your fingers, too."
She put her hand in front of the blue light. [/i]"It's more advanced than R2D2, I swear. Could you set this up to project little holograms? You know, an old friend of mine wouldn't send emails because her ex worked as some computer guy for the FBI. She claimed that nothing was safe from the right set of prying eyes. I suppose that's neither here nor there anymore. I also suppose she was right." Molly closed the case and gave his drink collection a final glance before stepping from the hidden room.
[/i] "You don't have to drink alone so much, by the way. I can drink alone with you."

"Well, I meant what I said, it's all yours if you want it. But the hologram only makes a keyboard." He left the door open long enough that she could change her mind if she felt so inclined. On his way out the door, he picked up a dusty green bottle with a well worn label.[/i]

As they stepped out of the room, the two heard a quiet creaking, like wind through the house above. To someone experienced, it sounded like a standing form was shifting their weight on the surface of the floor upstairs, but who knows.
After the initial sound was a long silence.

Molly held the silver briefcase against her chest and stared at the ceiling, wide-eyed. Then, she blinked at Wolf.[/i] " Intruders?" She hurried to the pool table and grabbed a cue. " Hope it's somebody friendly."

Wolf drew his knife and hustled to the base of the stairs.[/i] "I'll lead. If it's scavengers, there's nothing really here for them to take as far as they know. We can talk our way out of this."

The sounds upstairs have stopped, and there is no rustling to be heard. It is now silent again somehow.

Wolf put his knife hand into a jacket pocket carefully, then nodded to Molly. He started up the stairs, speaking conspicuously.[/i] "Well, if we need pool balls, we know where to come, but this place was a bust. We need to find some food and fast. Feels like I haven't eaten in days." At the top of the stairs, he pushed the door open with his off-hand. He hesitated momentarily, but tried to maintain the appearance of... unsuspiciousness(?!).
If nothing busted out at him, he would head out towards the area above the basement room, where he suspected the sound had come from.[/i]

(You can roll for both)
The hallway is as quiet as its ever been, and there's not a sound in the whole house or elsewhere. Whoever made that creak isn't moving, either because they already left, or they don't want to be seen.

She raised an eyebrow at the empty hallway and lowered her cue an inch.[/i] "Mmm. You're right. Maybe we'll have better luck next door. Nothing here but little mice and strange noises." [dice=20][rand=60055295295456596091150594710961467939603924973705266313179527726]

Wolf looked around and tried to listen for other noises or signs of passage.[/i] [dice=20+4] for acting. [dice=20] for perception.[rand=30259949712493434674529205734252595490335984339576250326759379107]
