"...Elves and Clairvoyants? What kind of books do you write, Molly? Fantasy, like Lord of the Rings? I thought you wrote light mysteries." He asks, seeming more curious than judgmental about the contents. "Hmph, romance. It's probably one of those Twilight-type books. Like this one, only without pictures." She gestures towards His and Her Circumstances, dismissively.

"Twilgiht? TWILIGHT? How DARE you compare my fiction to that ... that ..." She lifted one hand, as if ready to slap, but ultimately dropped it with a melodramatic huff. [/i] "I'll have you know, my short stories have been published in Strange Horizons and Fantasy Magazine!" All two of them![/i] "If you need me, I'll be keeping an eye on the poor young man upstairs." She stormed off. Once again, Molly forgot about Anya's gift.[/i]

Wolf rolled downstairs in his regular zombie-bashing attire. He gave a wide, almost theatrical yawn. He smacked his lips.[/i] "Mmmm... eggs." He helped himself to a small plate of the scramble and sat down at Breg's left. He took a bite of cool eggs and still managed a grin.[/i] "Good eats as always, Sister." "What's on the itinerary today, O Captain, my Captain?"

"We're going out to get more protein sources, and some extra fluids to try to save our stray. Sister Blaze thinks that we may need an emergency drug box and some other tools as well. I'm not sure how close the nearest hospital is from here."

Suddenly, from outside, the group heard a man shouting! He sounded angry ...
"TINA! FUCK YOU, TINA! I KNOW YOU'RE IN THEEEERE!"
Well, that's just bizarre!

"The hospital's gonna be a haul, but we can manage. It would be good if we had more bikes. It's a long way to walk and a longer way to walk carrying supplies." "I think--" Wolf was interrupted by the asshole at the front door.[/i] "Sounds like a real sweetheart. Can't imagine why Tina would've left him." He stood up and headed towards the front door.[/i]

Later, Molly returned to the common room wearing this getup:
She found the earrings in the mansion - they were high-end sparklies that probably cost more than her car.
Stuck in the house with four nuns, Caleb, and their injured guest, Molly passed the lonely time writing.
[/i] "Who is that one-armed woman?" he asked.
"Sylvia, the lion tamer. I warn you, she's more bad-tempered than her cats!"
"Well, that's just sad." Dissatisfied, she put the journal aside. Useless. Molly felt so useless. She shouldn't cower in the house! Maybe it was high time for a Rockyesque training montage.
She stared at her impractical shoes.
Maybe later.

Breg sat in the living room, reading a book by candlelight. He had felt close to useless after helping sort out the medical supplies, though he congratulated Wolf on a job well done. He had even brought back more than they had ever asked for.
He also, very secretly congratulated himself for remembering exactly what supplies he had been asked to bring, it was hard to remember everything when given such a list, but he had done his best on the fly. And he was glad that Anya had not been hurt, especially in the face of a weirdo like the one in the dentist's office. There were more of them out there, he was sure, more than willing to spend the rest of their lives taking drugs and waiting for the world to end.

Molly came downstairs with her journal. She sprawled languidly on the sofa across from Breg.
[/i] "Honey, our patient upstairs has a fever, but he's not delirious. You catch my drift? He met something stronger than the zombies. Chen believes that it'll track him here and kill us in the night." She kicked off her shoes and sighed.
[/i] "You asked me if we're safe. The answer is no. It's all right, though, because we do have the illusion of safety. Smoke and mirrors are all we can hope for nowadays. It's good to sleep easy."

Breg put down his book and looked across the expanse at Molly, and then smiled slightly. "This mansion isn't safe, but it provides us with a fortress that we may use to ward off our enemies. If nothing else, it is safer than the world outside, and the safest place we could be apart from an actual fortress, modified bank vault, or military outpost." He reminded Molly, and then sighed. "There are many terrible things outside, I wonder if heart-eating vampires are simply the newest kind of wicked creature there are out there. Is the gutless boy really the one who did all of this? And if we kill him, would it set it all back?" He pondered, and then sighed. "We have many to care for, we aren't all warriors, it would be difficult to fight a foe like this on our own."

"I somehow doubt that his death - or second death, whatever - will fix anything." As they discussed the gutless boy, Molly recalled that violent first night in April ...
[/i] "I've been meaning to ask: where were you when this mess began?"

"Then we need to do some research to find out how we are going to close Hell, if that's what has opened. I think the first step is finding out how they did it in the first place, but how would we find that information?" He sighs and leans back. "I was one of the people working at the convent when this all started. There were twenty of them to begin with, and then everything went to hell...Some of them turned into demons, but the five of us escaped together. Sister Sarah...was badly injured during an attack by one of the monsters, and she didn't survive the night..." He looks at his feet and seems reluctant to say any more about it. "What about you?"

"Oh, Breg. I'm sorry." A moment's silence, and then:[/i] "Me? Well. Believe this or not, I was being stood-up at a vegan bar. A vegan bar. Ha! I'd already ordered a beer when my date called with excuses. Sore throat. As if. I bought a new dress for that night, the ingrate! And then our call cut off and the rest is history. I stayed in the bar for a couple days, until there was a fire ..." She shook her head.
[/i] "Thank god we met. It's so hard to survive alone."

"...A vegan bar? Are...are drinks vegan? Or do you mean the food? Is vegan food any good?" He seemed confused enough by the concept that he became distracted away from whatever sad memories he had invested himself in, and was now apparently intensely curious about what a vegan bar was. "...I'm glad we met with everyone we did. I wish we could have found more."

Wolf strolled in, looking a little ruddy around the cheeks, a crooked grin exposing a glistening silver canine.[/i] "Vegan bar? That sounds genuinely unpleasant, even in light of another lunch of room temp Spam." He dropped down in one of the chairs and kicked his feet up on the ottoman.[/i] "And the convent sounds downright parochial, if I may be painfully literal. Still, those both sound better than where I ended up." "Hidden in the back of a Pepsi van for a week, nothing for nutrition but Pepsi. You think this apocalypse shit is nerve-wracking, just imagine if you subsisted exclusively on highly caffeinated soft drinks for seven days. In the dark. With a groaning zombie trapped in the cab. It was delightful."
