They came up the stairs into an area with nothing but metal grates for floors. The windows up here admitted more light, but it was chiaroscuro at best - totally black shadows. Footsteps could be easily heard. A ghost shot from one room to another down the hall, and more footfalls sounded from the room. Voices. Groans and howls of the dead.

Ashley covered up his face as best as he could, and plodded forth, asking ghosts and other creatures for their favorite movies or so forth as he ascended upwards. How did this guy get stuck back there anyhow?

((By "they came up the stairs into an area..." I meant they were done with stairs. No more ascending to do. You are on the eighth floor. Down the hall a ways, you just saw a ghost fly into a room, and heard the movement of human feet in that room. What do you guys do? I'll assume you both advanced up the hall, looking quickly in any doors and cracks along the way for possible sources of ambush, then went into that room, extra wary for ambush then, waving your torches around.))
To avoid ambush, you stop spouting off questions as you come through the door, but you totally got your demon tests ready to go, depending on what you find in there. You burst through the door, to see a man scurrying around the periphery of the room, while a dark ghost lurches after him with irregular movements. The man sees you and scurries toward you as quickly as he can. Guy- "Oh god oh god, get it!"
Ghost- "ggggWHYyouuuuuuWHYyouuuuugggg,...."

Ashley just about trips and drops his flare on the way towards the ghost, and it flies out of his hand a small ways in the ghost's direction! Ashley grunts, and tries to cover for the man.

The man was staring at the way out, between jumpy glances at windows and shadows. He felt the need to go out the door ASAP, and explained why... Guy- "Ozzie and Breanne are out there, we ... I'm gonna feel hella bad if Breanne dies this close to home. Let's find them and go!"

Ashley pats the rugburn off his knees and trots alongside them, looking this way and that with eyes downward-turned. "...My question exactly." His voice was rough and made him sound like an old smoker.

The man led them into the hall and cast about wildly, then headed toward the north. A door marked "Roof Access Restricted." They went through, casting about for ghosts. They couldn't see any, but smelled them, and heard an ambient groan. Guy- "They were gonna hide on the roof, hoping the ghosts would hate the ligh... Do you see that?" He was looking up at the door to the roof, the slow dimming daylight pouring in around the cracks. You saw nothing of note.

"I don't, I think that is a sign of powerful ghosts. Hold onto me, and do not stray." Ashley listened intently. His face hurt a lot more now, or at least felt stiff and hot. He was pretty sure this would take a while to heal at the very least. He paused, and then pressed forth. There was nothing worse than the darkness at this point, though he wouldn't let it put them off.

The guy grabbed a fistful of the back of Ashley's blazer and they went up, through the door, onto the roof. Ashley heard the man take a sharp inhale of breath, then... Guy- "We went through it..." The heroes emerged into the bright day and everything was way the hell off. It looked like it should - a bland industrial rooftop with large HVAC machinery giving lots of places to hide - but the sky was almost pearlescent, and the air far less warm than it had been when they came in.
Stepping forward, they couldn't hear their own footsteps, and the world seemed airless. It took a moment for Ashley and Patti to realize it, but they hadn't been breathing since coming through the door. They had to force themselves to start breathing again and the air felt thin and paltry. Guy- "what the hell"

Ashley spared a sidelong look a Patti, and then paused and looked for others here. This was strange, even suspect. Was it another ghost? He kept an eye out and listened, drifting his gaze downwards to avoid instant death. "Perhaps a powerful ghost. Be wary."

The guy nodded, dropped Ashley's coat, and lit the flare. He wobbled a bit. Guy- "It's like... *wheeze* Being on top of a mountain..." He started into the maze of HVAC machinery, people not wanting to get separated probably stayed with him. The air really felt feeble, like someone's pale memory of what air should be like, coming and going with a short attention span. Sometimes a breath would feel like it caught nothing at all.
And yet they didn't find themselves too beleaguered yet. Somehow, they were able to carry on... Until the guy stopped them again. Guy- "This is it... The same thing I saw in the door, but it's more clear now." This time you could see it too. Suspended between two machines, like barely visible drapes or jellyfish legs, some kind of faint gossamer shone. The man waved his torch at it, and it sparked a little, but didn't ignite. It just remained there, filling space, barely visible.
Then some people came around the corner on the other side of the stuff. Ozzie?- "Oh thank god, Lasse... The world's gone fuckin *wheeze* crazy!"
Lasse- "It's this roof, let's just go, man!"
Breanne?- "MY GOD! Look at them!" She was pointing at the top of the tallest Amazon buildings. They loomed creepy-like, but you don't see what she's talking about.
