Patti and Ashley ran to the building, getting flares and such ready. The possibility of instant death suggested they should keep guns holstered (unless they wanted to become shootin' zombies like Abdul), but one-handed weapons like Patti's hammer and Ashley's crowbar seemed like a good idea.
At the building, they took a moment to find a side door that was unlocked, and went into the darkness with flares blazing. ((We'll RP this here in The Streets, even though it's going indoors...))

The guys were upstairs. Of that there was no question. They looked around wildly for the nearest stairwell. It was hard to see what an alcove was in the darkness until you were all the way in it. In a few moments, Patti got Ashley's attention and they went into the stairs.
There was a strange noise here, like of operational machinery, but through a thick wall of... something. It clanged softly in the stairwell, all around them. They moved carefully but quickly.
Ashley, then Patti jumped in surprise at the sight of a glowing orb that passed out of a wall nearby and into another. Then they kept on.
At the third floor, they saw their first ghosts...
... sliding down the wall, trailing watery black strangeness above them. The ghost smell hit their noses like acetone and their torches sparked with the aura. The industrial sound began to be laced with intermittent shrieks.

"How are there so many of these things in here?" He swung his flare at the closest, and hopes that it catches.

Patti followed suit, brandishing her torch at the Dangling Legs of Death.

Ashley peered into the darkness. "Do you see anything else, Patti?" He asks, staring deeply into the dark beyond. "Don't stare too intently, there are dark ghosts out there." He reminds her idly, nevermind she survived more of this nonsense than he had.

The fire climbed the wall in a huge curtain and left the stairwell full of choking, sight-obscuring black smoke. They could tell their flares had been diminished by the use, and wondered if they should pull another already just to be sure. They kept on. The ghost sound still echoed in the stairs and the smell of acetone greeted them as soon as they emerged from the smoke. They tried to be wary of any movement in the shadows.
At the sixth floor, the stairs terminated. From outside, they could tell the building had eight stories. They ran out into the hall, their torches the only visible light. Shadows flickered ahead, and moans and sighs of torment came from beyond the veil of the world.

Ashley moved along in the darkness, holding up the flare in the other hand, with eyes low in case of ghosts. He wandered towards the next floor to search for the unfortunate soul.

"How many are in there?! WHERE ARE YOU? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?" He couldn't answer that himself but it is something. He ran along at a good clip and tried to avoid any possible ghosts but it was so dark.

There were no answers, but the ghosts finally made their presence slightly more plain. They saw the creatures falling out of shadows all over, looking like the tatters of paper burned on a campfire, falling into view. It made their bodies want to run, but they realized it was only about five of them - five chances at instant death.
At the other end of the hall, they could see a cast iron set of stairs glinting in the daylight from an unseen window. Probably that was the way to the eighth floor.

Plain view was better than no view, he rushed the creatures quickly to better attack them, and made quick about it. "Patti, come on..there are many more stairs to go." He had faced the ghosts often enough that kind of instant death didn't phase him much anymore.

Patti lost sight of Ashley in a ball of fire. It was like an action movie, except at the end there was no cool guy to see. They were lost in black smoke. Ashley felt blisters on his face.
Somehow, they came into the light of the window. They stopped to pull new torches - their first ones almost totally useless. They entered the last two flights of stairs.

"...I think...I just got burned." He wondered if he had any eyebrows left. He imagined the answer was probably no. Also his face felt made of burning. He found his choice relatively unwise, given circumstance altogether, but it would grow back, right? Or make him look like the phantom of the opera. "Let's go."
