Patti kept moving forward, slowly but surely, taking careful aim with the rifle as she went. She spoke over her shoulder without turning her head."I don't know about the blood thing. Micah and I are the only ones to encounter them until now. They drop shadows on you, pulling a lone person away to an alternate dimension, like a really long stairwell or hallway that isn't really there. They drain your strength as they get closer to you. So far, everyone's managed to escape them by running away, but in Seth's condition, I'm worried if he can do it." 89 rounds (50 still upstairs)

The flight down to the 5th floor stair was crowded. Grey limbs flailed in the orange light, rotten faces desperate for a taste of the living. One, two, three, eleven more rounds, and another tricky landscape of fallen corpses. The deafened people could now only converse by shouting. Joe- "That SUCKS!" The landing at the 5th floor was interesting - the door was open, but it looked like nothing could get through the pile of dead zombies there. By the damage on some of them, they'd probably been attacked with a sword. As Patti tried to get stable footing to fire at the next flight of zombies, she accidentally dislodged a severed head that bounced away into the teeming masses like a beach ball.

"I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH FARTHER WE CAN GO IN THIS!!! IT'S GETTING HARD AS HELL TO NAVIGATE THESE STAIRS!! I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA HOW THESE ZOMBIES ARE DOING SO WELL EVEN THOUGH THEY CAN HARDLY CLIMB A CURB WITHOUT FALLING ON THEIR FACES!!" Patti kicked a dying zombie forward into the advancing horde. She stepped back onto the same step as Joe."I NEED TO RELOAD, TAKE MY HAMMER AND COVER ME!!" She dropped her clip and carefully but quickly pulled bullets from her pockets and loaded them into the magazine.78 rounds left (50 left upstairs)

Joe- "THEY'RE NOT DOING THAT GOOD. THERE'S JUST A LOT OF THEM..." He mumbled something else to himself, looking very sad and frustrated, but not especially afraid of this bunch. Indeed, he didn't have to use the hammer except to push one on the forehead, sending it back into the others. They were too tripped up by the fallen in front of them. The ghost smell had thinned to not even be detectable over the stench of death all around them.
Still, Patti was no doubt frustrated, as everything seemed to take ten times as long as she'd have preferred. She finished loading, and went back to work. Ten more bullets and they descended the flight, eight more and they were at the 4th floor landing. The doors here were wide open, with zombies moving in an out of the floor aimlessly. That meant passing this floor, it would be possible for zombies coming back into the stairwell to attack them from above...

"HOLD THE LANDING!! I NEED TO RELOAD AGAIN!! ALSO, I'VE ONLY GOT HALF A CLIP LEFT!!" She slammed her shoulder into the door and tried to hold it shut while she reloaded the magazine."I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!! IF WE CAN'T BARRICADE THIS DOOR, THEY'RE JUST GONNA COME DOWN AFTER US!!! I'M ALMOST OUT OF AMMO, SO IT'LL BE HAMMERS AND FISTS THE REST OF THE WAY!!" "I WANT TO FIND SETH AND IF HE'S ANYWHERE, IT'S GONNA BE DOWNSTAIRS SOMEWHERE!! I DON'T HAVE ANY TACTICAL EXPERIENCE, HOW ABOUT YOU?!!" 60 rounds left (50 left upstairs)

Joe- "JUST EXERCISES, uh, LET'S KEEP GOING AND RISK THE REAR." Barring the door was impossible without leaving someone behind and trapping them with whatever else was on the fourth floor, and if the third was the same, it would be for nothing. Barricading it was impractical with nothing but awkward human-shaped deadweights for materials. But they were leaving a trail of bodies difficult for clumsy zombies to amble over. Joe's advice was a calculated risk that might be worth taking to move as quickly as possible.

"LET'S GO THEN!!!" She jammed the last half-full magazine back into the rifle and chambered a round. She took careful aim and tried to clear the next half a flight of stairs. When she ran out of ammo, she dropped the rifle and switched up to her hammer."I THINK WE'RE GONNA GET OUT OF THIS MESS, I JUST HOPE TO GOD WE'RE NOT THE ONLY ONES!!" presumably 50 rounds left (but those are all in a box on the 6th floor)

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, almost to the third floor landing, they seemed a little more sparse but still pretty bad. Joe had picked up the rifle, and so finally had a weapon other than his flare. He didn't use it until Patti ran out of ammo in
nine, ten. Joe- "SEEEETH! CAN YOU HEAR US???" Indeed, the third floor was exactly like the fourth - door hanging half open, zombies in, zombies out. More in at the moment, drawn by gunshots and yells. The only way to keep from slowing down was to not stop to kill each one, just powering through as much as possible. It felt like playing touch football with frankenstein monsters.
They heard someone shouting, somewhere on the second floor, just barely above the ringing in their ears.

"SEEEETH!!!! WE'RE COMING FOR YOU!!!" Patti swung her hammer and kicked, but only when a zombie was off balance and in a position where it wasn't likely to just grab her leg.
One did get a hold of her foot, as it was going backwards. Fortunately, a corpse broke the worst of her fall, but she was pretty sure she was going to have a bone bruise on her hip.
Her bottom slipped on the bloody mess and she thrust her body forward to land knees first into the zombie that had her.
When they landed, the knee thing worked enough to keep her tender flesh out of the thing's mouth, but she fell sideways off the top of it and into the legs of another.
Before the new zombie could bend over to grab her, she yanked its legs violently out from under it, sending it backwards down the next flight.
She scrambled to her feet and hammered in the face of the original zombie. They were only half-way between the third and second floors, but she called out again as she continued swinging at the oncoming dead."SEEEETH!!! WHO'S DOWN HERE?!! THIS IS PATTI, DON'T ATTACK!!! WE'RE LOOKING FOR SETH!!"

Voice from 2nd- "PATTI?! TELL ME YOU GOTTA GUN!" Joe was in pretty good condition, despite his appearance, and used his huge reach to bowl zombie after zombie out of their way. Still, it was a monster mosh pit that pushed them through the doors into the second floor office space. ((Patti proceed there after I post that they have arrived.))

Joe came into the stairwell again, followed by Patti, then Ivan and Richie. The zombie density was less mosh pit in here now, and more crowded grocery store. The air was dark and creepy, reeked of death, and had bursts of hot and cold over the weakened fighters. Patti noticed smears on the wall where lazy zombies had been leaning on the way in, sloughing off flesh.

Patti lead the way, since Joe had enough reach to attack from the stair behind her. Ivan and Richie were pretty wiped out, so they left them at the rear, for now, to catch their breath.
Pretty soon, the zombies would be coming from behind as well.
Patti bashed away with her hammer. A small woman came at her, a preschool teacher, judging from her cat sweater and brightly colored plastic frame glasses. Patti struck it in the head with a backhand, sending the glasses flying and the corpse sideways onto the stairs below.
A more threatening thing reared up behind it, but Joe poked it hard in the chest as it was off-balance stepping up, and it went tumbling back into the two zombies behind it, then into the wall on the next landing.
Patti jumped down two steps, to get a little extra power in her swing and to attack them before they could stand back up. Bash! Bash! Splortch!
Joe stepped ahead of her on the landing and roughly jostled some newcomers.

Joe- "SEEEETH!"
Ivan- "Is he in the clinic?" Joe didn't hear Ivan's question. They reached the first floor. Like the others above, the door was ajar, with zombies coming and going as they liked. Joe didn't seem like he was going to stop here. The stairs went down two garage levels from here...

Patti followed Joe's lead. She wasn't sure where the zombies were coming in, but there were two entrances to this building, the lobby and the garage. They were going to have to secure both and they might as well start at the bottom.
Patti moved ahead of Joe after a brief reprieve and got back to bashing heads.

Ivan and Richie beat back a zombie push from the first floor, drawn to Joe's screams. He should probably stop yelling for Seth. Joe- "SEEETH!!!" Now the zombies behind them seemed more dense than the ones in front. They could pick up the pace a bit, bowling zombies over and letting Ivan and Richie finish them off... P1... Joe kept going...
