The English classroom is as bare as can be, with only a faded poster of Shakespeare near the front. The class has a simple white board, and lots of uncomfortable desks.

FIRST PERIOD: LITERATURE Hardly anyone shows up on time to this class other than the geekiest of geeks, because kindly Mr. Prine can't as much as raise his voice to a student. He sits at his desk sorting through his brief case, waiting for a student to show up. Any student... Please.

Beef comes in and seats himself quietly. He's usually ontime. He can't help but manage a smug smile as he cozies on in.

People filter in at an excruciatingly slow pace. Reggie and his girlfriend Tanya come in under the wire, sitting off to the side. Frank Spilnick looks a bit disheveled, and barely makes it. Sort of late are Jen, Jennifer, and the creepy skinhead Colin. They sit in the back, natch. Mr. Prine rolls his eyes around slightly, but doesn't say a word until the class seems passably full. Mr. Prine- "Thank you all for gracing me with your presence. I'm hoping you have all finished Frankenstein by now... Yes? No?"
There was generally vague utterance from the sleep deprived students. Mr. Prine- "It is Halloween tomorrow after all, I found it to be appropriate for the mood of the-- Please, tell me, who is Frankenstein? If you say the green fellow, I'm going to lay my head on the railroad tracks."

Jen - (whispered and only audible near the back)"Frankenstein has nothing on me." Colin - (quiet chuckle)

"Mister, Frankenstein is the doctor. He created the monster." He crosses his arms and continues to sound self-satisfied. He did read it. After all he liked monsters.

Mr. Prine- (clasps his hands together in a gesture not so much like elation, but more like a surcease from terrible pain) "Bradley, thank you. If you learn one thing from this class, learn that the green man is not Frankenstein, he is Boris Karloff. Now, can anyone tell me what they found to be the most intriguing aspect of this novel?"
Tanya quietly unwrapped a peanut butter cup.

Frank - "I thought it was interesting how much better the movie was!"

Mr. Prine- "Really! How atypical. Tell us Mr. Spilnick, the merits of the Hollywood film over the classic novel?"

Frank- "That's just it, Hollywood versus classic is uh, a false choice. Hollywood made a classic because everybody remembers it. The book, I mean, no one remembers it like that, because it wasn't worth remembering. A total snoozer!"

Mr. Prine- "...Oh dear. Er, anyone want to defend Mary Shelley's work?"

Beef isn't about to argue with Frank, but he says "Well, the hero, Doctor Frankenstein, wasn't a good guy, and the Monster wasn't a bad guy. It was...kinda ambiguous." He offers, pretending to know less than he did about the subject. He was, after all, a secret monster fan.

Mr. Prine- "Very good Bradley! The monster, perhaps he is actually ill named? Who is the real monster in this work?"
The rest of the class looked like they were staring at a blank wall. "Well, how about let's talk with our neighbor and discuss... uh, the book. Or anything. I'm going to go look at my hands for a bit."
Beef ends up paired with Frank, who is surprisingly perky given the shambolic nature of the rest of the class. Frank turned to talk to him, and was pretty much the most animated person in the entire class. Frank- "Man I dunno, the book... yeah it had some pretty dark parts and all, but it was so hard to imagine the monster! Like, it was hardly described. I guess maybe I'm prejudiced, I'm a film guy and I love that old Hollywood horror shit."

"The film is totally awesome, but he was described in the book as having tight yellow skin! Why isn't he ever yellow? I guess that'd look really dopey." He scratches his head.

Frank- "Weird, I musta missed that. Anyway, I remember hearing about the moral of the story half a million times, it's too simple. If we were all afraid of playing god, we wouldn't have invented CPR and then how many people would be dead? Stupid!"
