Dr. Victor traversed the stairs, somewhat more clouded than before. It was the silence which truly disturbed him the most these days. The growling, the squawking, the primitive noises which now dominated the industrial cacophony of city life made him think of his last home. Not the apartment, where he stayed in Seattle, but a place far from here, probably lost to its own plans of chaos and primordial denizens of hell or the here-after. He clutched his hand inside his pocket, the wallet branding his palm. The gloomy daylight filtering through what appeared to be cancerous clouds of yellow and dust offered him little reassurance there would even be a sun tomorrow. If only it would rain... Now you say your lonely You cried the whole night through Well you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over youLinda looked out of the window of the car, catching the raindrops from smearing her face where her countless tears had already blazed trails down her cheeks. It was only fitting for the rain to continue its assault; Charlie had always enjoyed the rain. The trip to the airport had gone faster than she recalled ever before. Georgia wasn’t the place she thought she would end up, but it was as good a state as any. As the two story house was swallowed by the pine and oak trees, she felt her chest stop aching. She motivated him in ways he never imagined. Linda was the chisel busting down the granite walls around Charlie. It was sad to see the water rushing over his stone heart never seemed to make any impression whatsoever. Won’t you let me in, Charlie?[glow=red,2,300]Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue Well you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you[/glow]He only noticed it once the glass snapped when he tossed his briefcase onto the flat of the bed where Linda slept. She could complain about it later when she came home. The note was left tucked between the sheets; it was left in the vacant picture frame of their trip to New York City for New Years Eve. Charlie didn’t want to go out amongst everyone, but Linda had insisted on it. It was a once in a lifetime experience, Charlie. Won’t you come with me, please? [glow=red,2,300]You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head While you never shed a tear[/glow]The note was written in a simple writing, with a black pen… it was from the hand of a departing muse. She had removed herself quite clinically from his house; the drawers were still turned open, the cupboards bare, pictures down, toiletries pilfered, nick-knacks gone. Charlie couldn’t even find an extra sock when he did laundry. It’s not useless Charlie, just because you think it is. Even little things still serve a purpose. I promise. He could still hear her laughter, even now. [glow=red,2,300]Remember, I remember all that you said Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me[/glow]tab ~I have decided to leave you. I can’t keep putting myself out there for you and get nothing back. Goodbye, Charlie~ [glow=red,2,300]And now you say you love me Well, just to prove you do Come on and cry me a river, cry me a river [/glow]Dr. Victor couldn't stand to live in the house any longer. It was a tomb filled with phantoms and rotting corpses of past and useless memories. The creaking floorboards, the dust, the white kitchen, the welcome mat. The cast iron knocker, the overgrown weed-filled garden against the porch. It wasn’t as if his mind was suffocating him any more than the house was. When every shadow was a lie of a life that no longer lived or breathed, when every inch of the building was saturated with her, there was no home left. [glow=red,2,300]I cried a river over you[/glow]The weight of the note in his wallet was heavy, like a millstone. He had convinced himself it would bring him some solace, yet it was only a burden now in this shattered world. It felt like a knife digging into his tender fingers as he plucked it out of its hidden space behind the lining. The breeze threatened to turn the world upside down to get at that scrap of history. [glow=red,2,300]I cried a river over you[/glow]

Sonya- "Um, hello doctor. I come to watch. Are you on watch before? I hear that you do not have to do watch and things." She was wearing a thick sweater, the hand washed, beat up pants she was wearing at work, and slightly puffy, faded white sneakers. She dropped a hand club at the door to the stairs, as seemed to be the custom, and came out on to the roof. One of the tools of the post was a portable radio, which was clipped on a belt loop and half buried by the sweater's hem.
She smiled in a way that seemed too good-natured to be true, like Thierry from the night before, but with less mirth and more restraint. The last meaningful exchange he'd had with her was not very pleasant, but the doctor could see she'd moved past that completely.
She nodded and continued to the roof's edge, surveying their new world with little button eyes.

Dr. Victor turned his head, but his body remained fixated in the direction of the ocean to the west. He fought hard to try and shed even a single tear, but instead was met with as somber a moment as Sonya had managed to speak. His head shook on his shoulders and a heavy sigh left his lungs. "No, Sonya, I do not have any major duties beyond the clinic. But I do have to go to the University Medical Center this evening if the night doesn't beat me to seeing the group back first." Sonya- "Oh? Hm, I think you can do this easy. There is the building, right? So close."
His vision panned out towards what little he could glimpse of day, with the sun at his shoulder. That was another thing he figured he wouldn't hear again, a plane. Hadn't that been something he was going to investigate? Wasn't that the reason he was even in the mall the first time? "Sonya, you look like you've done watch before. Have- Have you seen any planes or heard any train whistles out there? Is there any chance of some functioning mass transit system that remains?" Sonya- "Mm... No. Not on my watches. I hear someone saw a small airplane the first day after it happened. One with the hydroplanes. But we still see some people."
His words were like a decorated egg shell, pretty and whimsical, but fragile and hollow. He spoke with the voice of a dejected youth. "I was in that mall to learn how to fly a plane. I was so upset at the little store; it claimed to have books but I only encountered rubbish. With... with the way things are going, I wonder how much we could really have salvaged from that mall if we had time. I wonder what we could have done to protect the people at the other building, Anna's building, that Seth managed to do here." Sonya- "Hmm... If you could learn to fly soon, there are probably many planes of Lake Union you could fly. I do not know how not being use will hurt them... Does the fuel evaporate? Will they sink?
If they board up a windows, I think people at Anna's apartment are fine. I want to think this."
His rambling finished, the doctor tucked a small shred of well-folded paper back into his black leather wallet, the page disappearing like a magician's slight-of-hand trick. One more unrefined sigh later, he began to move, slow steps about the roof. He shrugged absently, his voice a harsh whisper. "I couldn't cry for her, but I cried because I'm out of shape... THAT makes sense, Victor." He moved towards the door, head shaking and hands sunk deep into his pockets. Sonya hadn't heard his last words, of course, but looked at him sympathetically just the same. Then she turned back to the streets.

Sonya- "Are there less zombie today? Hm... I guess no." She turned and saw something amusing at the Pan-Pac Hotel. Sonya- "You don't see that every day!"

Well before his shift was supposed to start, Ben appeared on the roof in his black Blazing Eyed Shana windbreaker. He leaned his bokken against the wall near the door, and walked over to Sonya. "Anything exciting to report?" he asked with a smile. Sonya- "Naked people."She pointed to the now empty balcony.
"Oh yeah, Patti pointed them out to me yesterday. It's the end of the world! Anything goes!" Ben said, with his hands in the air like he just didn't care.

Sonya- "Haha. Maybe some people go more crazy now. I cannot do this." She blushed and shook her head.
You have a nice coat. Hm. All my clothe are lost. But it is OK. They were not so nice... I wonder what we all will wear in a year?"

tab "In a year?" Ben asked with raised eyebrows. "I think we'll have raided a few department stores by then. We could be wearing whatever we want, as long as a store would sell it. Or someone would sew it. But we should find some new clothes for you before then. Just need to clear the streets of zombies so we can take people shopping."

She gazed out over the unruly masses. Westlake in front of the building was quite clear, but on Dexter there were dozens, and down Denny past the park, there were hundreds. Sonya- "I wonder if we can do..." She looked very thoughtful.

tab "I'm sure we can. We just need to be willing to deal with the consequences. I guess we'll see what our leader decides to do." tab Ben figured it would be best to not reveal what they had discussed in the council meeting. Granted, it wasn't confidential information as far as he knew, but in his limited experience most leaders preferred to be the ones to make announcements. And Ben could see the point in that. Things had a tendency to become distorted when travelling along the grapevine, and it probably helped if an announcement didn't have to compete with a bunch of different versions of itself. And Ben didn't really know what Seth was actually going to do about the zombies.

Sonya- "Hm." She took note of various teams from the 403 building coming and going. (Who can say who that was at this point, as distorted as time has gotten?) "It is a busy day. I wonder how many zombie they will get every time? Maybe, if many other group like us kill some when they go out, it take the number down slow... Probably too slow. *sigh*" She turned her back to the streets to talk more with Ben. After all, with the barricade, there was less need for constant vigilance, Ben could probably see stuff coming past her, and so on."How is your day? " Oh no! The killer smile... Assassin of souls....

tab "Oh, it's been great," Ben smiled right back. "Got to unload all my issues and concerns at the meeting today, so now I don't have to worry about any of it. And I'm itching to get back to work too. Because it's just like you said: It feels great to make a difference." tab And being up on the roof alone with Sonya was of course also great, and seeing her smile at him...

Sonya eventually left the radio with Ben for his shift, went down to the comm center, and came back with snacks and drinks. They stayed there until replaced by the next person. Among distractions - a few sightings of humans, including someone in a cop uniform going to raid a wine company, and a group of black youths looking in restaurants for food. No one seemed overly afraid of the zombie gauntlet. The kids used basic squad tactics, maybe learned from video games? Their leader was a tall skinny guy with an oversized jacket.

Much later, Basil was working the roof when Ashley came up. he was smoking a small rolled cigarette in one of them holder thingies, like Hunter S Thompson. The sky was dimming considerably.

"Basil, I've come to do my part." The man seemed a little tired, but definitely awake, and offered his good hand to him to shake. "See anything of importance?"

Basil- "Haha, not bloody likely with these old eyes in this kind of light. Doctor Victor and one of our young strong negroes came back from the hospital with some hardware just now. Well, have the radio, if you like. I'll see you about, sir!"
