I smile and nod to her before taking my leave out the door. We don't spend all day socializing but I like the time I spend in her company. Laurie always manages to make me smile. Harriet- "I'll let you know if something exciting happens"

Laurie- "You better!"
The rain wasn't going to let off anytime soon, so it was probably better to just tear off this bandaid and dart to your car. The drops splashed up from the ground almost as hard as it fell from the sky, the sound giving you flashbacks to this morning's shower. Safe in your car, the rain battered against the glass and the hood like tiny fists. It was the middle of the day but the swollen grey clouds and blue light made it feel like the sun would set at any moment. The roads were empty, but you knew traffic was going to just crawl once you hit it. How'd you spend the trip and what did you think about as you drove?

I bolt to the car. It's too late for my lower legs, shoulders and hands but the upper half of me is well protected.
I feel vague dissatisfaction that my feet and lower legs end up soaked with water. My allweather boots are supposed to protect them, and yet, even the best laid plans are spoiled.
I turn on the radio and listen as I drive over, pondering the missing pieces of the case details. My questions, some intersecting with those asked, and some new, roll about in my head.

There wasn't any news about the case in between songs. Maybe that was a good sign that you wouldn't be swamped with journalists. Of course you had no obligation to talk to them, even if they were there...
The weather was lousy the whole way there, little mudflows ran down hills, carrying along the soggy remains of autumn leaves. You didn't have too much trouble finding the police station. It was smaller than your own and the neighborhood was a little better maintained, though still never more than five feet of smooth pavement. It was downtown, they probably got better funding, but more work.
The station's parking lot was overstuffed, and even parking on the street was getting a bit thin. You'd have to go down a block to the meters. You passed a car with fogged over windows. Someone who just left? But you didn't see anyone else ducking through the rain.

I try not to make other people's business my own, but for sanity's sake, take a peek in the window to make sure there's no one laying in the back seat or other such nonsense, before moving on down the street towards the station.
I'm glad that there aren't many reporters but it seems busy. Likely nothing to do with this case, high profile or not. Maybe they just received a large volume of work. Minor stuff that mostly kept people busy from day to day. That's how I saw it anyways.

You glanced at the car, but between the splashing rain and the foggy windows, you couldn't make out anything. You did sense warmth coming off the car, like the engine was running recently, and you didn't see the telltale rocking of... well, one reason cars get fogged. Sadly the rain would not let you investigate for long.
Even from here you could see a cluster of people gathered under the PD's front awning. Looks like the whole brigade came out to watch the show. They were in uniform, so at least you knew they weren't reporters... ((You can put a comment here if you like, but I'm going to tag you in a new thread shortly....))

I hunker down head between shoulders and avoid attention while walking inside.
I've never liked direct attention unless someone needs to speak to me.
