You arrive to work. Gratiot Avenue is crumbling to bits, moss and grass grow out of the long neglected pavement. The PD is one of the newer buildings, secure behind tall mesh fences, hard to see from the road. Despite the rundown area, this PD has one of the more sophisticated forensic departments in the city, and that's where you work.
Today you will be following along a potential killer, ready to check for new evidence. The crime scenes had been thoroughly swept, torn apart and taken away for testing. There might be little for you to do. At least it'd be something new, a chance to get out of the office. Your appointment at the 7th precinct is at 2PM and it's only about 45 minutes away if traffic is bad. How do you spend your morning? You weren't expected to do your usual duties, but if you wanted to keep busy, there was always plenty of work.

Harriet ensured that she finished all of her paperwork in a timely fashion soon after she got into the office. She checked all of her messages, updated her case files, and made sure to pass along any information She decided to do a review of the case to ensure she was fresh for the job; there could never be too much preparation.
She had heard a lot about this case; it was high profile, and even if she could find a piece or two of any additional evidence, it would help a great deal. It was just too.. neat, in a way she did not like. There were both not enough and too many leads. They were missing something. There wasn't enough digging done in some places, and too many in others.
She then looked over the evidence again for anything she could have missed.

((Oh Jara, I forgot if I linked, but I'd like if your posts could please be in first person perspective for this one. I have some guidelines for posts here: horrorboys.proboards.com/thread/1020/kult-lite-rules-final It doesn't have to be spot-on perfect tho so don't worry too much about it.))
The office still had some subtle remnants of holiday decor. At least they'd carted away those old pumpkins before they started to smell. One of your office mates still had a bit of glitter in her hair from the Halloween party the day before. What had you gotten up to last night?
You scanned through the reports, looking through the evidence photos. There's so much info, so many potential avenues for investigation, but only so much time to do it. And this case was a total rush job, given that it was associated with a missing child. (Though at this point, it'd been weeks with no sign, didn't seem hopeful at all.) Please roll 'Investigate'. (2d10 + reason, don't forget any bonuses you get from advantages)((Btw here is the reports page, but be warned it's pretty long horrorboys.proboards.com/thread/1028/police-report-timothy-mills-homicide You can let me know if you're looking for anything in particular out of it.))

I tried to remember what I had done; showed up at the party for an hour to show my face, and pulled a few files I was working on to complete them. The decorations had been alright but really I was just there to make sure no one thought I was being as much of a recluse as I am.
I checked through the reports with the evidence photos, wondering what I had missed. There was just so much information, but the real question was what stood out."Roll 'Investigate' - (2d10+ reason(2).)" __elXePi+2 ·

((Nice roll!! You can 'ask two questions', aka, look for anything specific but I'll give you an overview here if you can't think of anything specific.))
The photos of the murders were as grisly as they got, though over the years you'd been able to cultivate a remove. It was only so much evidence, you didn't need to involve your personal feelings, in fact, they'd be more likely to impede your ability to serve justice. There were diagrams included in the packets, including an attempt at mapping the suspect's movement through the home as he committed his crimes. Some of it broke down later without new bodies and wreckage for concrete evidence. The testimony of Officer Butcher had recently been called into question, namely the order in which the attack on him and Officer Clark had occurred. He had since rephrased his testimony, and the posited theory was much more sensible. Still there were a few strange details. These things were never so clear cut as on TV shows, but Officer Clark's gunshot wound seemed to be at a closer range then should be possible. How could the suspect have sneaked in the house, knocked out Officer Butcher, taken his gun and gotten that close to the back of Officer Clark without him noticing? He wasn't a ninja... There were notes of this in the file but no one had come up with a compelling theory.
Another item of notice that was more recent in the packet, were some drawings of symbols. The suspect had apparently been doodling with his finger while he was taped, and some enterprising detectives had used the footage to trace what he was drawing. There were images of puzzle pieces, but also an unknown symbol that no one had been able to identify. It was a circle with a harp-like shape in the middle. Could just be a random scribble, but maybe it had some deeper significance.

I look for anything specific in the texts we have available about the proposed meaning of the symbols. It may give insight into what the perpetrator believes.
I review reconstructions of the crime scene to find a plausable way that the shot could have been fired so close.

Based on the layout of the house, it would seem impossible for someone to sneak up on a non-hearing impaired person unless they'd been hiding very well the entire time. It was possible though. The gun was never recovered, so it might not necessarily be Officer Butcher's missing service pistol. Maybe when you went there in person today you could picture the scene better.
You ran the symbol through the usual databases, but didn't turn up much. Maybe due to the crude reference, it would be hard to make a match. Given the circumstances of the crime, and some of Detective Colt's notes, maybe it was some obscure occult symbol, or it could just be the logo for some death metal band.

I ponder what this could mean, and decide that I don't have all the pieces just yet.
I review the files one more time to ensure I did not miss anything, or have anything stand out that might have just been waiting to be detected.
Finding nothing new, I review any possible leads and try to piece together any trace evidence that may lead to more clues. Perhaps the killer was hiding, or maybe, there were more than one persons involved in the crime.

There would surely be some big revelations today. The suspect had never been willing to talk to the police, and now he was willing to go on a tour of the crime scenes. Why though? It wasn't really your job to make assumptions about the psychology of criminals, but any clues were good clues. There were still some big questions about the case, in fact, Detective Colt had written some out in her report.
Why attack the Bedfords? It wasn't just a crime of opportunity, it was planned. What sort of 'ritual' did Timothy Mills think he was doing? Where did he get the idea? Why shoot Officer Clark and leave Officer Butcher alive as a witness? Why take the victims to Zug Island, and why in that boat? What happened to the gun he used to shoot Jerome Allen and Officer Clark? Why remove Janice Bedford's heart and place it on that oil drum?
And of course--
What happened to William Bedford? You flipped through the photos again. The spray of blood up the dining room wall, the painted over family photos, the melted and destroyed toys, the poor mangled dog, the drowned babysitter, the severed heart... Elaborate reenactments of past traumas. And now, it was just done? Had he accomplished what he'd set out to do? If William Bedford stood in for himself, what would he have done with the boy?
Lunch was fast approaching. You'd have time to pick something up, or you could go downtown and get something to eat there before you went for the briefing. What did you bring along with you?

I make sure to bring any important case notes or questions with me. I am usually well-prepared and keep salads in the refrigerator at my office at work so that I can reach for them whenever I am short on time during the week.
My meals are very strictly planned; coffee and a protein bar in the morning, salad for lunch, and I cook and prepare something for dinner in the evening. Mostly fresh ingredients, I don't care much for my own health but I try to at least consider healthy meals.
I shove a salad into my mouth on my way out and make sure to get to my meeting a little bit early.

Your friend Laurie collars you before you make it out of the lobby. She was just coming in, the bottom half of her pants completely soaked with rainwater as she shook out her umbrella in a discrete spot. The rain was hammering the windows like someone was spraying them with a hose. Laurie- "Damn, girl. Perfect weather for your big outing, huh? Better bring your waders." ((Mind if I make up a bit about her? Let me know if you had any specific ideas.))

I see my friend Laurie Silverman and wave. I haven't seen her all day and it's a breath of fresh air in a busy morning of work. I shift all of my files to a place under my arm where they will be best protected and look at my feet.
I am very glad I wore my all-weather boots though nothing I do will protect my pants from the rain. I give Laurie a big sigh. Harriet- "I couldn't have asked for better." I reply dryly, but Laurie knows me well enough to know I am joking. "How is the rest of your day going?"

Laurie- "Better now that I'm inside! Might have to cut these pants off into some capris..." She brushed the knees of her soggy trousers. "How are you feeling about all this? Think you'll be okay? I know you can do it, but I don't think *I* could... We see all the ookie bits, but I never had to hang out with a killer..."
She shook her head with a chuckle."Sorry. You're going to be fine, I know it. Be great for your resume at the very least."

I wiggle my finger, looking mock-chiding about the situation. "Alleged killer. I don't know if I have all the pieces to put this all together yet, and I just...can't see it. Whatever happened, I want to make sure we put the right man or men behind bars." I ponder the thought. Men are almost always behind all of these elaborate ritual killings. There was something about the hunt aspect that seemed to attract that demographic more than the rest of the population. It was not always true, perhaps today, the real killer was hiding away, pretending to be a grocery store clerk or working shifts restocking nightly.
There was simply not enough information, but she'd get to the bottom of it. Or at least, create enough information shifting through details to make it possible for the detective or the rest of the forensics team to do so. It wasn't a one woman job after all. "Thank you. You know, I think, even if he doesn't talk, we will at least have learned something new about our perpetrator."

Laurie- "You're right. Oh I shouldn't say that word, I'm as bad as those papers. Still, I haven't spent too much time with the suspects, always prefer to be behind the computer. You're more adventurous than me, that's for sure. Tell me how it goes! I'm praying for you, but I know you don't need it." She gave you a genuine smile and a motherly pat on the arm.
